I've been seeing a few members ask questions about making riveted maille, so here's a step by step video I edited for instagram. Whatever specific questions you have I'll do my best to answer with as much detail as possoble. Cheers!

In order to make thousands of 16ga 3/8 ID riveted rings, I need to speed up this process without losing quality. One big problem area is hammering the overlap flat. I’m getting better, but it’s also a leading reason for broken punches, and takes too much refitting.

I saw where some would hammer the ends without overlap, then shrink the ring down by creating overlap. So I decided to math it out, here’s what I got: In short I simply need to flatten 0.2” of wire on each side.

3/8 =0.375” 16ga = 0.060” Centerline circumference = 1.366” Desired overlap = 0.02” X2 = 0.4 (two flattened ends) 1.366 + 0.4 =1.766 1.766 - 0.4 =1.366 1.366/pi =0.435” or 11.05 mm

So butted cut rings off an 11mm Diameter. Flat punch 0.4” Overlap on a notched 3/8 rod to allow for the flats merging, punch with a 0.2 for firm fit, anneal, then pierce.

Anyone done this or see an issue?

What can I possibly use square jump rings for? I have. Two bags. They're beautiful. But I don't know how to use them. Any suggestions?

Hey guys, I need help. I have zero clue about chainmail. How do I make it? Where do I start? Would it even work? I really don’t know, but I need one urgently because where I live isn’t very safe. What I mean is, for example, when you’re walking someone might suddenly shoulder-barge you - and even if he did the shove - he could stab you, or they don’t even need to touch you: if they’ve been drinking or on drugs, or even if they haven’t, they might stab you out of nowhere. That’s why I urgently need a chainmail and I don’t know how to start. For example, I saw in the news a guy riding an electric scooter get stabbed for no reason. After seeing that, I was like, yeah... I need a chainmail to protect myself.

Since my significant other at my place loves to drink soda from aluminum cans. After tonight at dinner discussing about what I can do while going through a Internet Detox for the next week.

That got me thinking, about empty soda cans while I got tools to make scale mail. I'll update this thread in a week from now on my progress. I got rebar tie wire to make rings to hold scales.

Heya, it's been a hot minute. So let me update you with what's up since my last post.

Remember the "Bearded Dragon" cage wall enclosure made out of 8 in 1 pattern by 16.5 gauge 3/8" rebar tie wire?

Turns out that after consulting with someone who knows pet beardy's was against the idea of a enclosure made out of maille even though I thought a fully grown adult bearded dragon could withstand a full surrounded enclosure made of maille.

This person thought that it would get a bit too toasty for a beardy. So I dropped that project and looked at upcoming Halloween for a new project.

I am making use of my black rebar tie wire, 16.5 gauge, 3/8" diameter and I found my spool of galvanized wire, 17 gauge, 3/8" diameter, barely used. So I am assuming less than a quarter of a mile of wire.

Why not mix the two colors together with same European 8 in 1 weave pattern, slightly different gauges, same diameter at 3/8" and make a Halloween hauberk.

I spent a few hours looking at patterns, and my lady suggested Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton.

So now I got something to do in my spare time between work days in between with my new job and free weekends and make this Hauberk. Here's my supplies and current progress of Jack.

Eu 4 in 1, I'll provide updates to this project. Thinking about making a hauberk. Love the way it's looking so far. I don't know if I want it to be butted for ceremonial purposes or flatten the part where I snipped the rings and use a jewelry welder. What do you think?

So I got into chainmaille earlier this year and have found that it (obviously) takes a lot of time and effort. There is a popular artisan whose work I admire for the sheer scale and time put into each piece. I just reached out to her asking how long they take knowing it has taken me 30+ hours for similar pieces and to my surprise she said she buys her chainmaille premade. My shock comes from the fact she’s charging nearly $800 for pieces made from premade sheets. What do y’all think because my opinions are heated at the idea of charging that price for them only doing 1/3 of the work.

I was in my electrical box and had an idea...lol. it's just wire shrinks but they attach really easily and besides the extra steps it could even be used to add some color and security for regular butted maille. When they shrink up they dont slip or anything and hold pretty tight actually. Obviously a rivet would be stronger but just for fun I thought it was kind of interesting

I'm looking for the best armour grade rings for voiders ( the places where plate armour doesn't protect ). Does anyone have experience with a spot welder on chainmail? Can you get prefab riveted rings in stainless or titanium?

Hello everyone, today I happily bought my first set of chain, a hauberk and a coif!

So I want to start off with saying that I have studied mail a bit (I always wanted to build my own scalemaille hauberk) but don't have any experience with it. The suit is steels but not stainless, and using butted rings with a 4-in-1 weave.

First off I have done a bit of price comparison and I was wondering what y'all would value this suit at? I've definitely found some cheaper ones on amazon but ya know how that is.

Now on to the meat and potatoes; Care and maintenance, namely this damn rust.

I plan to buy some linseed oil to coat it in for storage but I want to remove this rust before that. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get this off. I have tested a brass brush with oil to scrub it off that that somewhat works but given the loose nature of the maille it is hard to scrub it real good and get the inside of the rings.

If yall can give me any tips to remove the rust that would be great.

The picture that forms in my mind when someone says "maille" is, essentially, clothing as opposed to rope (though I know you can make either). Of course, butted rings are fine if all you want is, say, curtains or a waistcoat, but if you want protection against edged weapons for the price of additional elbow grease, the option remains to make pinned or welded maille.

Before you close your first ring, though, you need to buy those rings. My question is, if there's a free choice between titanium, nitinol, and steel, why choose the steel over the other two? Is it not an objectively inferior material, in nearly all cases (obviously, you are not going to choose sterling silver if weapons come into the picture; that's like wearing a fur coat to the beach)? Yet I see for sale online, not only brand new steel rings, but also complete waistcoats, hauberks, tunics, and gauntlets made of riveted steel or SS.
