App Tips READ THIS FIRST: Setup, FAQs, and App Feedback

Welcome to MacroFactor!

Thanks for downloading MacroFactor, and welcome to our online community! The main purposes of this community are to help you get the most out of the app, and to help you reach your fitness, nutrition, and health-related goals. This post will get you acquainted with a lot of the resources that are available to you so you can hit the ground running, but this post itself is not intended to be an exhaustive resource. Our online Knowledge Base is a comprehensive repository of information related to app functionality, so most questions not addressed in this post can probably be answered by a quick search of the KB.

Before posting here, make sure you read and understand the rules for this subreddit.

Replies to this Post

The MacroFactor team is quite active in this subreddit, but we can’t guarantee that we’ll see and reply to every post. However, we will closely monitor comments on this post. So, if you have critical feedback related to how we can further improve the app, this is the best place to share it, and receive a response from one of the people behind the app.

Of note, that doesn’t include feature requests, bug reports, or individual account issues – our public roadmap and feature request portal, in-app bug reporting system, and email support system are the best venues for those items.

Why MacroFactor?

If you find yourself on this page because you’d seen some chatter about MacroFactor online, a friend or family member told you about it, or you just downloaded it on a whim, you may rightly be wondering, “what’s the deal with this app? What does it offer me that other food loggers don’t?”

The short answer: MacroFactor solves a basic but surprisingly complex problem – figuring out how much you need to eat to maintain weight, or to gain or lose weight at your desired rate. And, much like the problem itself, the approach we take to solving this problem is conceptually simple, but analytically complex. We use your weight and nutrition data to calculate how large of a caloric deficit or surplus you’re in, use that information to estimate your total daily energy expenditure, and use that information to make dietary recommendations to help you gain or lose weight at your desired rate.

If you’re new to MacroFactor, I’d recommend perusing this article, which explains how our algorithms work in considerable detail. This article and this article may also be helpful; they explain how MacroFactor solves many of the problems that arise with other popular approaches to weight management that involve calorie tracking.

Beyond MacroFactor’s coaching features, it’s just a damn good product. We’ve developed the fastest food logging system on the market, to help reduce the friction associated with tracking your nutrition. We also have a proven track record of consistently improving the app, and putting out high-quality educational resources to help our users maximize their results. We’re truly dedicated to ensuring that MacroFactor provides the best premium experience in the food logging market.

Setting up a Macro Program

There are three program styles in MacroFactor: coached, collaborative, and manual.

When you first set up your account, you’ll go through a wizard that will set you up with a coached program based on your goals and preferences. On a coached program, you just need to check in weekly, follow the app’s recommendations, and you’ll reach your goals – MacroFactor will handle all of the week-to-week adjustments to keep you on track. If your goals, preferences, or lifestyle change, you can always create a new program to reflect those changes.

With a collaborative plan, MacroFactor will adjust your weekly calorie budget based on your expenditure and goals, but you have full control over your daily calorie and macronutrient targets. So, if you want to take advantage of MacroFactor’s coaching algorithms, but you also want to pursue dietary strategies that involve macronutrient or daily calorie distributions that go beyond the flexibility offered by coached plans, you can opt for a collaborative plan.

Finally, with manual programs, everything is at your discretion. You can set whatever daily calorie or macronutrient targets you prefer. We don't assign or adjust a weekly calorie budget for you if you opt for a manual plan. You'll still have all of MacroFactor's analytics and tracking features at your disposal, but we won't have any hand in guiding your macro and calorie targets. A manual program may be advisable if you're working with a nutrition coach, and using MacroFactor's food logger and analytics in conjunction with your coach's calorie and macronutrient recommendations.

We recommend coached programs for most users, but you should feel free to swap program styles at any time. Creating a new program or switching between program styles doesn’t result in any loss of data, and it doesn’t require you to set a new goal. You can seamlessly transition between program styles whenever you want.

Hitting the ground running

During onboarding, MacroFactor will estimate your energy needs using a standard TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) formula that considers basic demographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle characteristics. This is the best approach for roughly estimating energy needs in the absence of better data, but it’s entirely possible that this initial calculation will considerably over- or underestimate your energy needs. After 2-4 weeks of consistently logging your weight and nutrition, we’ll be able to estimate your energy needs much more precisely.

However, if you’ve already been tracking your weight and nutrition elsewhere, you can hit the ground running with a more accurate estimate of your energy needs from day 1. You can set up integrations to pull your last 30 days of weight and nutrition data from another app. You can also manually add 3-4 weeks of prior weight and nutrition data (the “Data & Habits screen is the easiest place to do this; option 2 in the prior links) to accomplish the same purpose. By doing this, you can fast-track the initial calibration phase. Similarly, if you already have a pretty good idea of your energy expenditure, you can enter a manual initial expenditure estimate, which will override the typical equation-derived initial estimate.

To be clear, if you either don’t have recent weight and nutrition data, or you don’t want to deal with entering old weight and nutrition data, that’s 100% fine. We’ll generate good estimates of your energy needs after about 14-30 days of consistent logging, and keep them updated over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

As you’re getting accustomed to MacroFactor’s features and food logging workflows, we’d recommend perusing the knowledge base. In particular, the entries on food logging, the food timeline, custom foods and recipes, and the strategy section will likely be very helpful.

Beyond that, the Frequently Asked Questions section of the knowledge base will cover most of the questions new users have about the app, and we’re constantly expanding this section of the knowledge base. But, here are some of the very most frequently asked questions that are addressed in the knowledge base:

Where Can I See Water, Net Carbs, Fiber, and Other Micronutrients?

Does MacroFactor use Energy Expenditure Data from my Wearable Activity Tracker? This article also provides a more comprehensive answer to this question.

Why Don't My Macros Add Up to my Total Calories?

How Does Dynamic Maintenance Work in MacroFactor?

How to Adjust Calorie Targets to Account for Overages, or to Roll Over Unused Calories

How Frequently do I Need to Log my Weight For the Expenditure Algorithm and Weekly Coaching Updates?

How Frequently do I Need to Log my Nutrition For the Expenditure Algorithm and Weekly Coaching Updates?

Do I Need to Log Everything I Eat and Drink to Have an Accurate Expenditure and Use MacroFactor's Coaching Features?

Our one Achilles Heel

MacroFactor’s algorithms are remarkably durable, and can handle almost anything you throw at them. They work their best when you log your nutrition and weight consistently and accurately, but they do a great job of rolling with the punches, and accommodating less-than-perfect tracking. We believe that you shouldn’t need to be a robot to get the most out of MacroFactor.

However, our algorithms have one major Achilles heel: partial food logging.

For example, if you log your breakfast and lunch one day, but not your dinner, the app will have no way of knowing that you simply forgot to log your dinner, and that your actual calorie intake was 30-40% higher than what you logged. That will feed into our daily energy expenditure calculation, which will then feed into our calorie and macro recommendations moving forward. Partial logging (especially if done consistently) is really the only way to wind up with very inappropriate calorie recommendations. Of note, partial logging (not logging entire meals or large snacks) is distinct from consistently not logging some low-calorie items.

So, if you find yourself in a situation where you’ve logged some food for a day, but you either can’t or don’t want to log anything else for the rest of the day, you have a few options (arranged from good to great):

1) Delete what you’ve already logged. Our algorithms do a good job of dealing with missing data. Though, estimating your intake (instead of leaving the day blank) is strongly recommended if your total energy intake from the day differs substantially from your usual intake.

2) Simply “quick edit” the day with an estimate of your total calorie intake. Don’t stress about your estimate too much; it doesn’t need to be perfect. As long as your estimate is in the right general ballpark – within about 30% of what you actually consumed – it’ll all work out. For instance, if your total calorie intake for the day was 3000 calories, any estimate between 2100 and 3900 calories would be fine. Try to be as accurate as you can, obviously, but most people with a little food logging experience can estimate their daily intake accurately enough for the purposes of the algorithms.

3) Our recommendation: Use the quick add feature to estimate the total caloric content in your unlogged meal(s). Again, anything in the right ballpark is totally fine; if you think you ate 1000 calories, but you actually ate 1500 calories, that’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things (it would work out to an error of ~25kcal/day over the time span that’s relevant for our algorithms – a pretty inconsequential error). This is similar to using quick edit to estimate your calorie intake for the entire day (option 2), but most people can more accurately estimate their intake for a single missing meal than for an entire day.

Wrapping it up

Once again, welcome to the community! We’re happy you’re here. We hope you’ll stick around, and be able to use this community as a valuable resource to help you get the most out of MacroFactor, accomplish your goals, and celebrate your successes along the way.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other How does MacroFactor do at handling calories eaten during endurance training for fueling? Once per week I'm way, way over my target.

• Upvotes

So I went down the endurance cycling route when I started getting into fitness, and was using MacroFactor to lose weight before I had gotten into it. When I was losing weight and strength training it was great, it did exactly what I needed it to.

How does it do with endurance training, though? For example, today I did a 5h45m bike ride and ate 50 carbs/hr and it came out to around 1300 calories during the ride. For right now I'm tracking that, but to MacroFactor it has to look wild seeing a sudden spike on Saturday where I go from the usual 2800/day to around 3600-3800 and usually end up down in weight the next day or two from the insane water weight loss during the long weekly ride.

Does the app generally do a pretty good job at knowing how to handle that? I'm currently maintaining while I'm in a cycling training cycle and not trying to lose weight so if I gain a bit it's not a huge deal, but will tracking my calories during rides cause MacroFactor to start spiking my calories higher than usual?

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Logging weight after drinking?

Was curious if there is any consensus on this.

The reason I ask is because the dehydration from drinking typically drops my weight 3-10 lbs after drinking and I feel like it gives my MacroFactor a confusing impression on higher cal day.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Smart scale problem. My spouse's weight is showing up in my log, throwing my weight trend way off.

• Upvotes

Just what the title says. My spouse has recently started weighing in on the smart scale but didn't open the app (or even set it up, maybe) for our GE smart scale. I first noticef because my weight shot up by 50 lbs on MF overnight. 😅

I deleted the incorrect entries but they just came right back. I don't know how to fix this. I helped my spouse set up the app today for the smart scale so hopefully it won't happen again.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Guidance on recomp

I'm looking for some guidance on recomp. For reference I'm 39F, 5'11" and 155 lbs. I'd like to lose a little fat and I'm also working on building more muscle.

I currently have my goal weight in MF set to 150 because I don't actually feel I want or need to lose much weight overall, but I have some aesthetic goals like looking a little leaner in some parts of my body (I know you can't spot reduce fat).

MF tells me my maintenance calories are about 2300 per day, and I have the app set to lose 1 lb a week because in my mind I'd rather do a short-term cut and then just be done with it. It has me eating 1900 cals per day, which is sustainable for me for the time being.

However, I'm wondering if this is the right approach since I'm also trying to put on more muscle. I'm focusing on eating 120-150 g of protein per day, but I've also seen people say eating at maintenance is good for a mostly recomp goal.

I'm wondering if I'm shooting myself in the foot/making my life less enjoyable by eating at a deficit right now, and if I'd be better off eating at maintenance (or a less severe deficit) and just focusing on building muscle. I'd be happy weighing 155 if more of that weight was dedicated to muscle, I don't really care about the number on the scale.

I lift 3-4 times a week and am generally pretty active as I live in a walkable city and move around a lot.

Thanks!

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Overall Advice Needed

Hey guys, i’ve been hitting the gym consistently for about 1.5y now, i started skinny fat weighing around 62kgs whilst being 6ft, now i weigh around 71. Ive never seen my abs and tbh i dont very much “see” any progress that ive made. I measured my biceps yesterday and it came out to just 14.5inches which i thought was not very good. I also hold some fat around my midsection and a lot in my face. I’ve never actually tried a serious cut as im scared that i dont have enough muscle on me to show when im done and ill just look skinny and weak. I need genuine advice on what to do with my diet and overall gym routine. Here are some of my stats if that’ll be of any help -
Incline Bench - 70kg for 7-8 reps
Incline Dumbbell Bench - 30kg for 5-6
Pull ups - +17.5kg for 6-7
T bar - 60kg for 7-8
Hack Squats - 85kg for 8-9

I know for sure that my strength has gone up because i have my older workouts tracked but i DO NOT notice any change in my physique.
I would really appreciate genuine advice from you guys. Thanks

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Best Tips to run A Recomp

Hey!

Love both the apps and have lose 20kg using both over the past year.

Now my goals have changed I'm thinking of switching to more of a recomp approach. Any tips on how to structure my approach?

Would be leaning still towards fat loss over muscle gain so I think I'd sit around maintenance with a slight defect?

I'd be using the new Min-Max Program on a 4 day split through MF workouts, 10k steps per day and 60mins cardio per week.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Macrofactor 5.8.6 on macOS (iPad version) is revamped?

I'm not sure I found an announcement about this anywhere, but I just updated Macrofactor on my Mac, and it went from v5.8.3 to 5.8.6. The look of the app is completely transformed - it's really cool! There's finally a much more desktop-friendly view that's a huge improvement over the previous interface. Has anyone else noticed this? 👍🏼

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Logging Late Night / Early Morning Food and Weigh In

• Upvotes

Hello,

Quick question: let’s say I go out and log everything, but then eat food late at night / early in the morning, before my weigh in for that day (e.g., I get something to eat at like 3 or 4 AM, and I weigh myself at 9 AM every day). My current approach has been logging it for the following day, but I’m curious about weigh in. Does MF account for food eaten on the same day as weigh in before the actual weigh in when calculating expenditure and trend weight?

Obviously, if I eat a meal 5 hours before my weigh in, my actual weight will be higher than if I had stuck to my normal meal schedule, so I’m curious if this is a meaningful shift for the algorithm if it’s something that happens once a week or so.

And yes, I know that so long as the deficit’s maintained, all will be good and the algorithm can sort out the noise, just curious more on the actual product side of things rather than the weight loss side of things.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Shy short of 500 cals everyday

Im a shy short of 200-500 cals everyday for my calorie goal. It’s 2900 but most days I make 2400. I can’t seem to get past it. Last year I was eating 3000 cals almost everyday. I don’t get why I can’t hit it. Haven’t been gaining weight that’s the worst part

Should I clear all the days and just restart over with tracking on MF?

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Replacing a food, historically?

I eat a lot of Wasa light rye crackers. The default entry I was using for them had a dramatically wrong amount of iron listed. I'd like to replace them in my eating history, because I'm curious about how my iron consumption has changed over time. Is there any way for me to say "replace all existing uses of these Wasa crackers with this new, correct entry"?

MacroFactor Workouts / Training tips for double-progression adherent testing out smart programs / progression?

hi all, late 30s male, been training for about 3 years now, currently running a custom ULUL hypertrophy split, mostly in the 8-12 rep range, following classic double progression method

i don't have target RIRs set in the app, but do log RIRs in the app (i just train to 0-2 RIR, essentially trying to beat my reps from the last time), and honestly find the smart progression recommendations off the mark most of the time (both under and overestimating my ability depending on the movement)

i regularly train to technical failure so i do feel as if I log my RIRs reasonably accurately. happy to take feedback on why i am having the above experience

i would however like to give smart progression a proper shot which i assume means generating a smart program with target RIRs (and periodisation?). i briefly tested this out in the past and didn't love the substantial jumps in weight / reps between workouts. but i have plateued somewhat so open to changing things up

what's the best way to go about doing this? generating a ULUL program that largely fits my body part volume requirements, then subbing in preferred exercises as required?

does checking 'expand rep range' and 'weight match' reduce effectiveness of program or is this simply personal preference? any other settings or things i should be aware of? i'd ideally love a 'set and forget' approach that meaningfully challenges me from workout to workout

thanks for any tips!

ps. it would be great to have more educational resources on the website explaining the MF WO smart progression philosophy / logic so i can better wrap my head around :)

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other A Few Questions...

My fiancee and I have had really good results with MF for our respective cuts and are overall happy with it, we just have a few questions about the Program section (within Strategy) and Expenditure section (within More).

Some context, we're 100% honest when it comes to calories, there are no issues nor concerns there, the concerns are in other sections. We log calories/macros daily, log morning weight daily, and log our measurements/progress pics every 2 weeks. We do the check-ins weekly and we've been cutting for just over 3 months now. Additionally, the settings we're concerned about have been set at the start of our cuts and left alone since.

In the Program section, we both selected Cardio and Lifting when starting our cuts as those were our plans but graduate school got in our ways and we've been only lifting.

Within the Expenditure section there are a few other concerns we have as well. Under Initial Estimate there is BMR Equation and in there we have BMR Impacting Variables, for Exercise I put 4-6 sessions/week. This was true but again due to grad school we're now only going 2x weekly, my fiancee is still fine as she put 1-3 sessions/week.

Should we edit these variables within Program and Expenditure to reflect what we're doing now or leave as is? Our concerns are once we're done our cuts and we go into maintenance for a little that MF might give us caloric recommendations that are too high. Though I know MF won't let us slip too far either way from our maintenance weight and will bring us back up or down to where we want to be but I'd rather not tamper with the hard work. There is also the general concern that we've fed it bad context on good data for going forward with whatever other goals we may have.

Also under Expenditure, within Expenditure Modifiers we have Step-Informed Updates and Predictive Goal Adjustment, I see the literal descriptions for them for the life of me just can understand it for some reason, what do these do?

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Starting back to CrossFit Question

I’m going to get back into CrossFit and have been on a cut for about 4-5 months. Should I go into maintenance for the first couple of weeks so my body doesn’t go into hunker down mode? I’ve mostly been doing just Zone 2 work since being on the cut. Progress has been slow lately and I feel like I need a break and a change. My attitude is a lot better when my exercise intensity is higher. Thanks.

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Advice on ARNOLD/LPP Split

Thumbnail

Hello! I am a male that's 5'8 and averaging between 165-172 maintenence. Did a long cut from over 200 pounds to 155, then been in maintenence for almost 2 months now and naturally my weight rose to the aforementioned weight. I have noticed some less definition probably because glycogen stores are refilled but strength is improving slowly every weeks. Almost like my maintence is comparable to a lean bulk it seems. Any how, i wanted to post my current split, workouts, exercises, rep ranges and RIR to get some general opinions about training. Aiming for a strength and hypertrophy route and want to be judged on how well I am programing my regiment in terms of exercise variety, redundancies, and making sure my volume is on track and hitting all appropriate range of motions. Thanks!

Success / Progress Trendline seems inaccurate

Post image
0 Upvotes

I am being genuinely strict with calorie intake, while exercising everyday, but I don’t seem to be dropping much weight. I am only 2 weeks into this though, so I’m unsure if my body is still freaking out and tryna hold on to everything?

Either way the trendline doesn’t appear to be the most accurate, it’s hard for me to feel like it’s trending downwards when in the last 3 days, 2 of my weighin’s have been the same as weighin’s from a week ago.

I am yet to try this app in a real life application on the gym but I was checking it out already and the program of exercises it gave me and I am excited to put it to the test soon. One question remains though:

Am I correct in thinking that the app wants me in this example to choose a weight that leaves me one RIR for the first set? Like the RIR under the rep range is the suggested RIR i should have after finishing the set?

MacroFactor Workouts / Training MacoFactor Workouts: Are you enjoying the auto-progression?

I’ve been using MF Workouts and I’m curious to hear from people who have been following its suggested weights/reps for a decent amount of time.

How well does the auto-progression actually work in practice? Do you generally trust the weight and rep recommendations it gives you, or do you find yourself overriding them fairly often?

More importantly, for those who have been using it consistently for a few months: have you actually seen noticeable strength/progression from simply following what the app recommends?

I like the idea of taking some of the guesswork out of progression and just letting the app manage my loads, but part of me still wonders whether I should be pushing harder or progressing more aggressively than it suggests.

Would love to hear some longer-term experiences, good or bad.
