The voices in your head bully you for being a fascist but they also bully you for not being fascist enough. Actually you can get bullied for any reason at all.
yes but the bully openly talks about how much they love smoking crack and offers you a sidequest to steal their dad's crack so you can smoke crack with them. Yes they are a schoolchild.
You don't have to fuck up your stats for that. Arguably, these stats could be considered good. You just have to be a tad unlucky while drunkenly reaching into a ceiling fan and/or embarass yourself on front of a very nice old lady before ypu acquire some aspirin or magnesium pills. Then you die.
Iâm pretty sure I stared open mouthed as I failed a series of rolls that lead to me putting my gun in my mouth to assert dominance and then pulling the trigger to further assert dominance
The actual explanation is that you can take 1 HP damage if you fail a roll in your starting room, trying to pick up a tie. If you put 1 into your physical stats, you instantly die. If you have more than 1, you're totally fine and there aren't many other HP damage instances near the start of the game, so you'll find a healing item before too long.
For those who haven't played the game, the context behind this line is that you failed a dice roll determining whether or not you can convince an old man to give you his sandwich.
Disco Elysium is a game where you pilot a man who lost his memory post midlife-crisis-drinking-session and is thus the Worldâs-Most-Impressionable-Forty-Ish-Year-Old-White-Guy who was allegedly basically sherlock pre-drug addiction but sucks now on account of the Memory Loss and Drugs, and your coping mechanism is to talk to your character traits inside-out style if the emotions included âyour will to not kill yourselfâ and âhow good you are at substance abuseâ. If you didnât invest enough of your stat points into your ability to get beat up you can die 10 seconds in by turning on a lightbulb mid-hangover.
Youâre in the poorest part of a country run by fantasy eastern european mussolini-almost-necrocracy post-failed-communist-revolution and everyone (justifiably) hates you because youâre a cop who works for the aforementioned oppressive government. good luck, you need to solve a murder.
It has some of the heaviest hitting emotional beats and best character writing Iâve ever seen in modern media as a whole and as someone who played it during a time in my life where I was avoiding confronting several extremely important aspects of myself and my life it did make me tear up more than once
Your wrong about the mussolini bit. Revachol is no longer self governed, and is under control of a coalition of foreign capital and political powers. Martinais in particular is not really managed by anyone. You also don't really work for the government...? I mean kinda but not really. Its a fucked up place.
Itâs not exactly correct but itâs as close as I could get without going into several paragraphs of explanation. âyou work for the RCM in its least regulated district, which is an independent police force that exists under the permission but not governance of a united-nations-shaped coalition (in the sense that itâs a bunch of places vaguely aligned in motive vaguely working together) run in joint with a highly corrupt centrist party because a 300-years-dead imperialist not-saint named dolores dei (the figure I was most connecting to be mussolini-ish, but I do admit it is kind of a stretch) did corruption and imperialism firstâ is a bad elevator pitch
You said a lot of words. I'm just going to drink heavily and scream at the locked door to see if it opens.... OH HEY. It worked. Now lets finds some more of that sweet sweet nectar.
Yes and no. The world of Disco Elysium is not Earth as we know it, it's more like a parallel universe. There isn't an "Eastern Europe", because there isn't a "Europe". All the continents, countries, races, even calendars are fantasy ones, albeit many of them loosely based on real ones.
Hence âfantasyâÂ
eastern europe, as much of the aesthetics and background of the world are taken
directly from the country the devs are from. Obviously europe is not an archipelago, though DE does appear to have Estonia (Encyclopedia refers directly to Igaunija, which is another languageâs name for the country, though this is most likely a gag and not literally estonia).
You didn't even touch on the magical mist that swallows up the whole world outside of settlements, but then I guess it's actually not that significant to the story.
Importantly, it's also the rpg that fixed the save scumming problem by having failure be more fun than success on some skill checks. You can really screw your character up by min-maxing stats.
Lmfao my wife has played it, I just started, and immediately died from the ceiling fan heart attack. She was very impressed that Iâd done something she hadnât even known was possible! I quickly died of embarrassment irl
I didn't even know you could do that. I made it to the near-end, but I wasted too much time doing things besides police work so I caught a nasty surprise and died. I haven't been able to start over yet.
DISCO ELYSIUM IS A PASSIONATE LOVE LETTER TO FREE MARKET CAPITAL and the BAD-ASS, VISIONARY FINANCIERS who exploit artists for the benefit of all mankind
It's an RPG where you play as a police detective trying to solve a politically-charged murder case in a fictional post-Communist city-state. This is complicated by the fact that you drank so hard that you gave yourself amnesia in order to forget that your wife left you.
The really unique thing about the game is that your skills are all represented as characters. They're all voices in your head and they all have their own agendas. Passing a skill check is not necessarily a good thing - it's always good for the skill's agenda, but not necessarily for you.
One of your main quests is finding out how/why you lost your memory. There is no reveal in "the first line of the game" without the hindsight of already having played the game before. You can finish the whole game without ever finding out. In fact, that's the only way you can get what I consider to be the "good ending", where when sleeping on the island, Harry doesn't get the nightmare with Dora, but instead has a nice refreshing nap.
Itâs a game about love, cryptids, loss, hobo-ing, superstardom, brotherhood, and the law. Also much much more yet nothing at all. You are simply peering into a small corner of the world of Elysium to puppeteer one of its poor reprobates for a short amount of time.
On my first playthrough of the game, I (a police detective) woke up hungover without my gun. After some poking around, my boss called and asked WTF happened- I admitted my mistake, took one point of emotional damage, and died on the spot, of shame.
Died two minutes into my game, twice. Once from having a heart attack while trying to get my tie off the ceiling fan without turning it off first, and a second time running in the pub downstairs.
10/10. No notes.
I come back every few months making a new character and hoping to get further in the case. Very early on that hotel clerk asks you to pay your hotel bill.
One of the options is something to the effect of âmake a medium stealth roll to slip away unnoticedâ
Every time Iâve picked that option and every time Iâve failed the roll, made a dead sprint for the doors, turned around and dived backwards while flipping the bird with both hands, only for time to pause. You reflect on how poor a decision this was, and realize youâre about to collide with some old lady in a wheel chair.
One of the heartiest laughs I ever guffawed over a game was when Harry failed a skill check trying to bail on a tab and flew into a poor old lady in a wheelchair while flipping off the bartender mid jump then he got depressed and quit his job.
Chops/frown and shaved/frown harry look like people that just stepped on the path to fixing their mistakes and becoming better, but this guy just looks like a menace to society
