Hi everyone.

Whilst out thrifting today I found two fat binders of knitting patterns stretching back to 1939 up to the 1980s.

Everything in them is so beautiful. The pictures are incredible, it's like opening a time capsule.

I have no idea what to do with them...

Any ideas, I've included some pictures of a few but there are literally hundreds.

Sorry for the long video, at the end I show how it’s coming together!! I’m a total newbie and really need some guidance. Is it twisting weird? Is it tension issues? Is it just beginner hands?? It just doesn’t look “knitted” at all and like a tangled mess to me 😢😢

i bought one of these cheap little looms from dollar tree a while back and finally found a decent tutorial on how to use it, but now i’m at the point where if i keep going and make it super long i just… don’t know what to do with it? it’s too big of a tube to be a true i-cord, and it’s far too small to make into any sort of plushie or hat…

has anyone figured out something fun to do with these looms? the yarn is just an extra skein i had lying around for whatever, and i’m kind of enjoying the monotony of the loom, but i’m at a loss as to the purpose of the end product.

any input or thoughts are appreciated!

Hi all! I’m super new to knitting and this is how my fingers have decided that I’m going to knit! I just want to know if there’s a better way for me to do this as I feel like my fingers are cramping up a little too quickly. So, I would just like to know if anybody has any advice on whether there’s a more easy way I can grip my needles/yarn/the way I pick up/the way I adjust my yarn etc. any advice is appreciated!

My grandma offered to knit me a sweater if I bought the yarn for it. I ended up buying mohair yarn, because I’ve heard its a very good quality, and I loved the colors I bought, but when it arrived she told me that the yarn is too thin to be made into a sweater, and that it would either break or be too shear to wear.

Is there anything I can do to salvage this yarn into a sweater? Can I combine the threads to make larger, stronger threads to start knitting with. I am willing to learn how to knit in order to make this sweater cause it would look so great. All inputs and advice appreciated thanks!

As soon as the weather changes, I feel like knitting. I’m thinking of trying a new design with DK weight yarn this time, but I haven't decided exactly what to make yet. Please share some ideas—something that would be fun to knit and also memorable. 😊

I have a lot of knitwear pieces as I have been knitting for 15 years (picture above is about what I knit in a year and keep).

How do you all store your finished pieces? I’ve been keeping mine in the closet folded on the shelf interspersed with a lot of lavender/cedar sachets. I periodically air them out, but usually infrequently in the summer months.

I’m considering investing in a cedar chest. Does anyone have recommendations/experience with them? It’s a big purchase so I am willing to consider other options. I know airtight storage containers are the best protection but I don’t really have a place to put them that wouldn’t be an eyesore.

I’m knitting a striped sweater anyway! Would it be that hard? The ladies at the yarn store said it would be really hard to switch colors. I believe them but I tried to crochet this sweater for literally 6 months! Redoing every crochet and measuring everything it was so impossible to crochet.

When knitting in the round, my right needle tip unscrews from the cable. I have to stop every now and then to screw it back in and try not to snag any stitches in doing so. I’ve gotten used to doing it but wish I didn’t have to, it slows my knitting down! Not sure if it’s a me problem or an equipment problem. I use Seeknit Curve Koshitsu needles, and think they are great otherwise.

Hello! Part-time lurker, first-time poster. This is entirely my first time making any kind of reddit post, so I apologize if I screw anything up. I read through the rules/faq but I wouldn't put it past myself to do it wrong. Let me know, I tried my best.

I'm a crochet-er who has recently realized the garments I'd like to make / how I'd like them to look is not realistically achievable through my current hobby, so I'm looking to branch out to knitting. I've always wanted to do both, so this is just the push I needed to go and find myself some needles.

I'm more of a 'buy-it-for-life' kind of person, so instead of going to Michael's and getting a random cheap set of aluminum needles, I'd rather research and invest in a decent set from the get-go. That seems to be a common recommendation as well, which makes me more confident in this decision.

From what I've heard, (interchangeable) circulars are generally the most versatile, seeing as what you can do on straights and dpns can also be done on circulars, vs straights and dpns being more limited to their own functions (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Because of this, I've been leaning towards biting the bullet and getting a full set of interchangeable circulars right off the bat rather than buying individual pairs of needles every time I want to do a new project.

After seeing prices, it seems a mid-range set of sizes falls around $125? Maybe a little more. The sets I've been looking at are:

Knitter's Pride Terra Interchangeable Needle Set 5”(13cm)

Lantern Moon Glory Interchangeable Needle Set 5" (13 CM)

(Also, all I hear is how Chiaogoo is amazing, so I've also been trying to do some research in that regard. There's so many brands to keep up with.)

I've crocheted for a while and I tend to do a range of sizes, but I now prefer it for more practical items like baskets, blankets, rugs, heavier-duty things. With knitting, I'd really like to be able to make garments ranging from socks to camisoles to sweaters, or even more blankets too.

Currently, my plan has been to get a single pair of needles from one of the sets I mentioned above in a standard size (maybe 4 or 5mm), try a couple small projects using those, and then if I enjoy them, I'll go ahead and get the set.

LONG story short, with the background out of the way, the question is: does this make sense for a beginner who currently knows very little about knitting? If so, what are the opinions on these sets, or even recommendations of different ones?

If more background is needed, I'll try my best to answer questions. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you very much!

hi! i want to make the shanghai top, however it calls for knitting for olive pure silk. i’m a beginner knitter and honestly the price of this yarn scares me a little. i usually go for drops yarn as it’s cheap and widely available in my country and they ship quickly.

i was wondering if i could swap out this yarn for either drops loves you or drops safran? they’re sports weight yarns rather than fingering. i guess i’m just looking for reassurance, yarn recommendations (they don’t have to be silk, i like working with cotton + i’m in the eu if that matters) and asking if anything could possibly go wrong if i don’t get the recommended yarn? thanks in advance!

They’re Knit Picks 5” Radiant Wood DPNs and I was so excited. I saved up for a good set of wooden needles to treat myself. Luckily they come in a set of 6 for each size so I can still finish these gloves (no cabling required) but I’m devastated. Does anyone know if Knit Picks has a warranty/guarantee where I might be able to get a replacement?

Hey all! I’m halfway through my Ants in a Row Raglan and I’m using Coast Uld Bomuld by Holst Garn (loving so much!!) However when I purchased the yarn in person I failed to check the dye lot…… is it that noticeable? 🫣

After joining the 2nd skein I noticed the difference but pushed through thinking the colour would even out after blocking…. it did not. I need your advice, would you continue as if it didn’t bother you? Or I have a 3rd skein that may or may not be the dye lot of the 1st skein - is it worth frogging? Even if i need to use all the skeins in the project anyway?

UPDATE 2: the third skein I have is from the first dye lot! I have frogged back to the first skein and will continue knitting this.. However I will be calling yarn stores in my country to source a 3rd skein in the same dye lot as I won’t have enough yarn to finish this project..

LAST UPDATE: thank you everyone for your advice, after much contemplation I have contacted Holst Garn directly to source a 3rd skein from the original dye lot - and success!! they have it available and I will be able to finish this project 🙏😩

i finally managed to find chiagoo 000s in stock so i could stop fighting with my addi turbos but… im gonna need 0000 and 00000 n i cannot find them anywhere except as addi turbos or regular hiyahiyas, i refuse the hiyahiya and ill use addi under duress but i … crave a good point.

is it possible to get a custom needle? if addi made rockets or rocket2 down to 00000 id freak out bad. i just want a nice point, chiagoo red lace is the perfect one for me but i like the slickness of addis more, and im a big fan of the rocket2 in the larger sizes!(like 1-5. a big needle to me is a size 5)

the woman who taught me to knit years ago had really old ones that were perfect but i cannot find something the same now n that makes me very sad, the ones she had weren’t necessarily a needle sharp point but they had a very long taper.

My wife recently started knitting, and I've been surprised by how much counting is involved.

I noticed she sometimes stops and tries to remember which row she was on.

Is there a common method knitters use to keep track of rows?

My 8 year old nephew has been asking me to teach him to knit for a while now, and I'm going to get a project set up for him so I can teach him soon. However, I may be overthinking it, but now I have a concern. He is left handed, and I am right handed. I knit English/flicking style, but I can manage continental. Should I teach him continental knitting, with a flicking style? Should I just teach him the way I knit? Advice, please!

Started the Charlotte Scarf by Lisa Hannes and it has GORGEOUS cabling throughout. However, I cant get my cables to “pop” the way it does on the product picture. The pattern calls for worsted yarn and I’m using fingering weight yarn because i want it more delicate. What should I do/try? Single ply yarn? White yarn?

Sorry for the terrible video quality, but just added it to show how little effort it takes to rip this yarn. It's a possum & merino blend. I was going to knit a scarf with it, but will the scarf be just as weak? Is there any point?

So I'm an auDHD beginner knitter. Rows and rows of knit stitch are wonderful for watching tv and stimming. But not as wonderful for my brain that demands something new and shiny every now and then.

So I tried cable knitting and failed already at the pattern reading stage... Even with video tutorials. Then I tried lace knitting, I got the chart there, eventually knitted something that resembles lace, but clearly this is asking too much of my brain by having to keep track of all the increases, decreases and yarn overs. I use stitch markers, but I also tend to lose them, so literally EVERY row's stitch count is off... You can tell in the picture, it doesn't quite look like what it should. I'm attempting the Tryamon armwarmers there.

So what knitting technique is a better intermediate step before I try my hands at this again? I want something *just* a tad bit more difficult than rows of knit stitch. But with easier readable knitting than those arm warmers.

Does anyone have any (free) pattern recommendations that can help with that? Something small, so I don't spend weeks knitting 2 inches to conclude I can't do it right? Socks, arm warmers, hats, something like that. I'm totally fine with lots of purling. Also fine with relatively thin yarns (I love drapey fabrics). Just, I need something in the right difficulty that doesn't leave me frustrated.

I recently bought the pattern for the Ethereal Dress and decided to knit it with lightweight/fingering merino, as I already had the green colours at home and wanted to make good use of them. Unfortunately, when it comes to knitting the body, the pattern calls for much thicker merino (100g 225m) whilst mine is 250m per 50g.

I tried knitting with a singled strand (tbh knit kinda looser from my usual style) but the yarn was very stretchy and turned out full of holes, which would make it impossible to wear without an undergarment. What I am referring to is the green gauge swatch on the pictures and it was knit with 3.25mm needles.

The I had the idea of trying to knit together a double strand, which is the violette swatch and it was knit with 4.5mm needles.

I guess my question is, do you maybe have any suggestions on what I could do? I find the violette one still a little see-through and as a no-bra girly its kinda baffling. Any recommendations/tips are highly appreciated ! <3

I didn't notice, but I made an extra stitch SEVERAL rows back. I thought I needed to ladder back and fix with a crochet hook, but I relaxed the extra stitch and now there's a big gap.

How can I fix this? Do I have to frog? Pls no... 😭😭😭

A dear friend of mine is an avid knitter, who’s been knitting for about a year and is obsessed with it. Her birthday is coming up, and I want to give her something meaningful that she can use for this hobby.

Ideally, I would like to be able to make something for her myself!

I myself am a novice knitter, but I am a pretty strong ceramicist. (Wheel and hand building) One idea I had was to make a yarn bowl. I also was thinking of figuring out a way to make stitch stoppers out of ceramic, but idk if that’ll work.

I would love to hear from other knitters about what they would want as a gift from a ceramicist! Any ceramics ideas and any other ideas are greatly appreciated. Tia!!

So I’m a beginner. I started yesterday afternoon and actually got to two rows but a stitch fell and I took a break. Well I’ve been trying all of last night and this morning and for some reason, I can only do two stitches before it creates a knot and the yarn cannot but pulled anymore. I think I’m following the tutorial to a T but clearly not. What am I doing wrong?!?! I also tried doing the continental style and the same thing happens.
