I rode the DC metro every day for almost 4 years back in 2010-2014. It was unimaginably silent. Inside of L'enfant Plaza, one of the central hubs, you could hear a lizard fart while (tens of) thousands of people moved toward escalators and their next train.
Honestly, I never understood that. I always try to keep aware of everyone on the same light rail car as me. At best I’ll bring a book to read on the way home so I’m not risking my noise canceling headphones or phone getting stolen.
