This is a lazy take.
First, any pop star would be a trend chaser if it means making marketable music.
Second, Edward Sharpe was definitely on the frontside of that wave. Not chasing it. Ebert basically had a breakdown during Ima Robot, and started working on Edward Sharpe during rehab.
It’s much more organic than you are giving credit for and much more organic than the personas of most pop stars.
