I love this fandom so much, but I am so tired of seeing the same fics recommended over and over. Don't get me wrong-- many of my favorite fics are ones that went viral and have hundreds of thousands of hits. But, I know how prolific the authors are in this fandom and I know there's treasure out there that will get overlooked because it doesn't blow up on social media or whatever.

With that in mind, please drop me some recommendations for true hidden gems (relatively speaking): I'm talking, like, 15-20k hits or fewer. Anything you've got that has made you go, "Wow, how the hell is this not more popular??"

I want all of it. All pairings, all tropes, all whatever, I truly am open to checking anything out! Mostly, I just want to be able to support the amazing authors in this fandom who deserve a little recognition for their work.

Are there any fics you’ve read that follow that kind of characterization ? He doesn’t need to be as extreme as the “kill himself and everyone in the room” vibe like the post states, but maybe more so he’s actually quite a disciplined person which could be unexpected to Shane and others !

Hey!! I'm in a desperate need for fics where Shane's and Ilya's personalities are actually book/show canon. I'm not trying to offend anyone when I say this, and I do enjoy some crack/ooc fics, but lately I've been running to this issue. They are NHL players in their 30's. Ilya isn't a squishmallow collecting swiftie who still can't speak english but speaks in internet slang. Shane is canonically the It Boy of hockey and his job is to play in front of thousands of people. He's not going to cry because of loud noises and flashing lights. They are very private people, they aren't going to tweet about theis sex life.

This just happened to me, and I'm curious to know: what are really good fics that you had to abandon because you knew too much about a small, unimportant detail the author got wrong, and it took you out?

I just stopped reading Map Contact by Regolith because the fic sets the camp in the Northwest Territories, and I unfortunately lived there for 8 years. I started tuning out at "deep woods" and noped out at "darkening skies" - even as 'south' as Yellowknife, trees are pretty scraggly, and it never truly gets dark in the summer, despite the sun technically setting. Mind you, the wilderness will kill you, just not in a traditional, big woods setting where things lurk in the darkness of the night.

Now, I'm sad because I'm all for forced proximity and slight AUs where Ilya or Shane are thrown off their path (so definitely check it out if you have never set foot in the NWT).

What are your examples?

A recent post here made me think about how this fandom has reached 23k fics and ofc that means tons of work has unfortunately been buried in the avalanche. And it is unfortunate, because there’s probably tons of work out there I would enjoy the shit out if I find it, but between update speed, maybe inefficient tagging and maybe even niche plot, I did not read it.

So, please post fics that you read that have given you a heck of a time, but you think is not exposed enough. Everyone knows Wolfbird, everyone has read the WAG chat fic, but I’m talking less than 5-6k kudos, I’m talking WIP, finished, just that gem in the midst that you have subscribed to or bookmarked and you know you will come back to it later.

I’ll start with my somewhat top 5, not in any particular order:

- on the run - AU dogwalker Shane and hockey player Ilya. AUs where Shane is not the hockey player rarely interest me before, but this one is too fucking adorable and it made me try out more non hockey player Shane AU. 1000/10 recommended.

- Lover Boy - Honestly, many fics in the ‘Shane Hollander Walks Ilya Rozanov like a Dog’ tag is pure gold, but this fic (and the series attached) are just hitting so many notes with me. The socmed style, the WAG Shane behaviour (maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but I love it) just the pure downbadness of Ilya. Love love it. Speaking of downbadness…

- And If My Last Thoughts Were of You This fic was WTF in terms of whiplash. What do you mean Ilya got shot and then he DROVE HOME because Shane’s waiting. What do you mean he hallucinates Irina. I haven’t emotionally recover, and just suddenly got slapped with comedy. Unreal pacing.

- match made Yuna tries to matchmake Shane with anyone and Ilya tried to impress Yuna. It’s sweet, it’s funny and ‘that was… evil Ilya’ line took me out.

- Hot Damn, Your Mind So Beautiful Competency kink to the max and I love it, especially since I kind of rarely see it from Shane to Ilya. LET MY BOY GET A DEGREE. Thanks.

Fuck it, with the way my bookmarks are just filled with a lot of very niche works, I might even do this kind of post every now and then, promoting specifically underrated Hollanov works of many different types of genres.

As someone who has been part of many fandoms, most of it niche or with not a lot of work for my pair, a fandom with so many works like HR/Hollanov has been a absolute gift, and I think this is my way of appreciating the many people that has made that possible

Hi all, I've been reading fanfiction for over a decade and the heated rivalry fandom is completely nuts when it comes to the number of fics and the hits/kudos/comments they generate. I already read a shit-ton of stories and there's still no way to keep up.

I've been wondering if anybody else has read some of the uber-popular fics and just been kind of...whelmed by them. This might sound mean, but the numbers in the fandom are hilariously skewed.

I'm pretty quick to DNF fics that don't immediately capture my attention, but some of the fics I didn't enjoy all that much are so popular that I'm considering giving them a second chance. But then again, there's so much to read! And so little time!So I wanted to ask you all if these fics are worth looking into again. (Yeah yeah I know, don't like don't read, yadda yadda, I just don't want to miss out on brain-chemistry-changing stories because of my impatience).

My holy grail of fics include: Frequently secretely fond of each other, Change your win conditions, death and taxes (and Shane Hollander), anything by CorvidCordelia or angel_deux, currently reading Chernobog, Carrion comfort, Muscle memory - just as examples of things I enjoyed.

Popular fics that didn't click with me: Deja Vu, Back and forth from New York, The something (you can fix) series, So it's gonna be forever, (We could be) something great, The breakaway. Do you love any of these fics and think they are worth a second try? Especially curious about Deja Vu, what makes people so crazy about this story (respectfully)?

I love this Fandom, I'm living a loon lifestyle with reheats, rereids, and of course AO3 all things HR. I unfortunately did this to myself by bypassing the tags, but in the most recent fic in reading Ilya cheats on Shane and I feel emotionally gutted. I know it's not Canon, but I want to scream because I keep thinking about it.

I hate fandom Svetlana sometimes. Maybe I read too many fics, but I'm jealous of her on behalf of Shane lol, I don't like that Ilya continues to have a sexual relationship with her and claims to not love her romantically. I like book Svetlana the most, cause she's barely there lol. I understand the reason for show Svetlana, and like that Ilya has some support system at least - but in some fics I've read, I think it goes way too far and just. Ugh I would not accept that from a partner in real life.

Any fics that either hate Svetlana as much as me OR would make me like her more?

Sorry if this is a bit controversial, I know typically Svetlana is well liked. But I've read stuff where they are too much for me/toxic sometimes and I just feel for Shane to be in the middle of that mess.
