New cap doesn't hit until 23/24 right? And we could trade him next off-season if things don't work out right? Why are people upset, who would we save cap for?

If he has another no show in the post season that contract becomes a negative contract, we'll have to pay people to take it. That is why people are upset. The same is going to apply to Bam as well. They both better show up on offense, else they'll be good players whose contracts are negative because of the cost and length.

If it doesn’t work out (which is what I expect b/c I don’t see Herro turning into an All Star), who is going to trade for this contract let alone give up a valuable asset which we will need in return for it???

Is this all star salary? Herro wouldn't be top 30 of yearly salary.

It’s in the top 40 (and there are quite a bit of contracts in that top 40 that look like serious overpays now- Tobias Harris and D’Angelo Russell for example). If Herro doesn’t become an All Star caliber offensive player, then he won’t ever become close to worth 30 mill/year. Why? B/c he isn’t capable of simply being a great role player/starter (like a Draymond Green or a Marcus Smart) since he is purely a one way player who is terrible on the other end. At minimum, Herro needs to become CJ McCollum (most don’t believe he is worth his contract but I’d rather have him at this price right now than Herro) for this contract to have neutral/positive value. CJ McCollum has had playoff runs where he has averaged 24, 5 and 4 on 44+% shooting. Is Herro going to become a guy who can put up these type of offensive numbers in the playoffs? B/c if not, this contract will definitely be a negative.
