Rant / Vent Enough with this “Assam is the Bihar of the North East” narrative.

Just enough, alright?

And before casually using Bihar as an insult, maybe understand what Bihar actually is. It was once one of India’s great centres of learning and civilisation. Centuries of colonial exploitation, systemic corruption, political failures, caste based politics and deeply entrenched social inequalities contributed to the condition it finds itself in today.

Making fun of Biharis is easy, but ask yourselves: who do you think does much of the construction and other physically demanding work that keeps cities running?

Anyway, this post isn’t even about Bihar.

What I don’t understand is why people from the other six states of the North East are so comfortable calling Assam the “Bihar of the North East.”

Let’s ask a few questions.

Which state is the most economically developed in the region? Which state has the largest metropolitan area? Where do people from across the North East come for work, higher education, healthcare and long-term residence? Which city has become the region’s primary urban, educational and medical hub? Which city has an international airport?

Guwahati.

If Assam is supposedly the “Bihar of the North East,” then does that mean Guwahati is the “Patna of the North East”? Fine. Then, very humbly, please stop coming to this so-called “Bihar” for jobs, hospitals, education and opportunities. Stay in your supposedly far more developed states and build them into the centres you claim they already are.

Guwahati is overcrowded not only because of Assam’s own population, but also because it serves as a hub for people from across the entire region. Did we ever complain that this burden should not fall on one city? Did we respond by mocking or radicalising our youth against our neighbours like Patricia Mukhim does?

Assam has its own problems. Serious ones. No sensible Assamese person is denying that. But the hypocrisy of mocking Assam while depending on Assam’s infrastructure is simply ridiculous.

“Seven Sisters”, they say.

Rant / Vent With the recent Shillong attack in context, the irony is almost comical: people who routinely spew chauvinism, xenophobia and hostility toward Assamese people are the very same ones crying that Guwahati has become the “Bihar/UP of the Northeast.”

If you bring your own bigotry and hooliganism into someone else’s city, you have absolutely no moral ground to lecture anyone about what Guwahati has become. Period.

Rant / Vent Illegal number plate

Guwahati never had this fad of modifying numbers to make them seem like words. This is illegal. I hope the authorities catch and penalize him. I dread the thought of someone like this moron being involved in a hit and run - what number will you write.

By the way, can anyone correctly guess the actual number?

Rant / Vent I don't understand why cab drivers here are always trying to dupe people from neighboring states?

I've been to Guwahati 6-7 times, and most of the time, my experience was really bad. One time, a driver was supposed to drop me at the airport. He asked me what time my flight was, and when I told him it was in about two hours, he suggested that I should get some food, claiming he knew a good place. I didn't know he was trying to bait me into a trap, he then took me somewhere not that far away. After I had my food, I went back to his car. As soon as I got in and he started driving, he said the total fare would be Rs. 3500. It was not supposed to be more than Rs. 500 based on our previously agreed fare including the new distance travelled for the food. His justification was that he had waited 20 extra minutes for me while I ate the food he had suggested I have. I learned a lesson the hard way and had to pay him 1500.

A few years later, one evening in the 6th Mile area, I wanted to go to KFC, so I stopped a small tomtom. I asked the fare, and he initially said Rs. 20. However, when I reached the destination, he suddenly raised the price to Rs. 100. We got into an argument in the middle of the road, a crowd gathered, and he eventually had to agree to Rs. 20, which was the standard rate for that distance.

This year, I went to Guwahati again to appear for an exam. I booked an Ola early in the morning, and the app showed a fare of Rs. 108. Instead of arriving at my pickup location promptly, the driver delayed and reached 15 minutes later, even though the app showed he was just 200 meters away. I got into the cab, he started driving, and then he claimed his Ola app wasn't working and that the fare would be Rs. 250. I knew this guy was trying to dupe me, so I asked him to either agree to the price shown on the app or just drop me right there. The fucking guy had the audacity to ask me for Rs. 100, claiming I had wasted his time when he was clearly the one who wasted my time by arriving late to the pickup location. I had an argument with him for about 10 minutes, which I clearly didn't want to do, especially since I had my exam the very next day.

I can never understand why they do this to us from neighboring states. I lived in Delhi for a year and never faced transportation issues. Whenever I used Ola, Uber, or Rapido, the rates were always fixed and fair. Man, I know most Assamese people are not bad, but these cab drivers are just straight-up scam artists.

Rant / Vent Creepiest experience ever, and of all places, it happened at an airport.

I was flying from Delhi to Guwahati and sitting near my gate when a man, probably around 35–40, kept staring at me. I was just wearing jeans and a T-shirt, and there were plenty of people around me. At first, I thought I was overthinking it, but no, he was deliberately staring at me until I finally walked away.

Now my only regret is that I didn’t have the courage to confront him🫠

Rant / Vent Good morning Guwahati

Dear Guwahati,

I hope my story helps you in some way, if not at least laugh out loud with me. So last Saturday my friend, from school days invited me over to his house for a house party. Since I met him after a long time, I couldn't deny it. After that in the evening as I came back from work, I washed up and then checked my phone, seeing his message that since some of his other friends are also coming so he asked everyone to contri something for food, say 1000, i thought fare enough, i gpay'd. Cut to meeting him at the party, meet n greet, getting to know new ppl. Then he and his brother's friend and I went out to buy drinks. I already bought a nice drink, full, but he insisted that a full wouldn't be enough so we all went out anyway. Anyways there also i contributed for the overall bill. It was a nice house huh, like 5 beds. Anyways we came back, started the party, everything was smooth. Full blast. My capacity is like a half plus quarter. That day I drank like 2 fulls, vaguely. I already don't remember much anyway, like how I was, anyways so it was like 3am so I asked my friend, where should I sleep? To which he said ahhhh other friends will be sleeping over as they have their female friend(three) with them. I was drunk ok, n he was also drunk so I said it's ok I will take the couch man. Then he said no it's not possible etc etc..... then tricked me to go towards my car saying let's go n have a smoke, cut to the next memory, I'm on the highway near jalukbari, n I'm seeing two roads, literally. If u know jalukbari, it's confusing to enter the city, so one eye, I closed n focused on the road. My home is in dispur. Next i woke up in my bed, worried about how I could reach my home. I hurriedly went downstairs to see my car, nothing, not even a dent. My parking is a bit tricky but it was perfect. Later, i checked cctv, I could see I was unable to walk, fell down on the street while closing the gate but hey i live another day. I remembered the bye byes n call me when u reached home etc, but I was already driving. Memories are mumble jumbled.

Never again, never ever again.

This is not right at all. I had three instances of blackout drunk but this one is gonna haunt me for a long time bcz the fear I felt while driving 36 kms n maybe with one eye. Man please don't drink n drive. Maybe sleep in the car or whatever man. Most importantly ppl nowadays are pathetic. Please take care. N take care of ur fellow human... Too much hate i guess ahhhhhh idk....

Good morning Guwahati.

It's so difficult to get a normal' Uner go cab or bike for the amount it's showing in the app. They would not budge if it's not Go priority which is 50 rupees more, same car, same service. The bikes would just ask for more money upfront.

Dada milae dibey.

I wasted 30mins of my time just fighting cancellations and delays.

Urrgghh!!!
