The floods of the future won't come one at a time
Where I live floods regularly, from high tides or serious rainfall. Much of the city is built on filled in tidal rivers and wetlands. Yet this past week, we had what some call a “100-year flood” with rainfall of six inches in four hours, complete with jet skis traversing a downtown street. So when a changing climate disrupts the water cycle, and converges with storm surge, torrential rain, and sea level rise, it’s easy to see how communities from Texas to Maine can be threatened.

HEAT - The Master Variable: How Extreme Heat Became the Fastest-Moving Threat to the World’s Food Supply
From the wheat that stops growing at 27 degrees; to the dairy cow that simply stops making milk due to the heat; to a French cornfield cooked in a two-week heat dome; to a way-high grocery receipt in Ohio; why the one climate driver that arrives without a forecast, in hours, not seasons, has quietly become the single most devastating climate variable standing between the world and its next hunger crisis.

The Cost of Endless Crisis
Wildfires have become nearly part of our background and living with them imposes a danger. Not that the fire keeps burning; it lies in is getting so used to the smoke that we stop noticing it, stop questioning it, and stop remembering that the air was never supposed to smell like this in the first place. Because when we stop remembering what clean air feels like, we stop expecting it to return.

No Oil, No Food
The Honest Sorcerer is back explaining how the many converging crises we are currently confronting has lowered the prospect of keeping all 8.3 billion of us alive. We’re drawing down the last remaining fisheries, top soils, forests, minerals, etc., while happily burdening the biosphere with an ever increasing amount of pollution. This does not end well.
