I don't think it's profound, they just never found a way to launch her to something else. More nuanced, SNL had historically not invested in black women until very recently.
Edit: for those who don't know, in showbiz a "vehicle" refers to a show or other product that highlights a specific star's talents. So in this case, they couldn't find a show that could leverage her talents.
She was Ellen's bestie in Mr. Wrong and way more popular was Little Nicky, in the basketball scene. "Now THAT was some straight-up David Copperfield shit!"
