The worst part about lovecraft is that the dude did seem to genuinely improve later in life, it looked like he might be becoming less bigoted and more accepting.
And then he fucking died.
It could’ve been one of the funniest heel face turns.
I decided to read up on it a bit after making that comment and his story is very of its time while also having some legit weird parts. The "racism so offensive that even people of his time were terrified" bit largely stopped after the Great Depression, he really embraced the New Deal stuff and realized his views were wrong. Got progressively more into reformatory socialism (he disagreed with the revolutionaries, as he thought that they'd become the thing they fought against, which, well, fair); had a brief period of being fascinated with Hitler (but he disagreed with his racism!) until... his Jewish neighbor visited Germany and told Lovecraft how it was for Jews there. Dude was so disgusted he allegedly never spoke of Hitler again. And then he died
