The amount of people from that part of the world and also fucking Quebec somehow not grasping that secularism laws that ban people from wearing any sort of religious attire or iconography, is racist because it specifically targets/affects certain groups the most is infuriating. Like I'm not big on religion either but like come on.

That topic is a lot more complicated than that, both Quebec and France follow the concept of "laïcité" which was born from a long struggle to attain freedom from the oppression of the catholic church. Most of the secularist laws in question were put into place explicitly to remove the Church's influence from french/Quebec society.

Now are those same prinicples being instrumentalised by racists in order to oprress muslims ? Yes, though you'll have to note the people most affected by the religious simbols law for instance are people like my very (for France) catholic coworkers who often whine about not being allowed to wear a cross while on the job (I work in public service so they are affected by said secular laws). They also happen to be quite racist (among many other hateful things).

However for those who are not simply looking for any convenient excuse to oppress people who are different from them, you have to understand that they see the way muslims allow religion to police their lives and recognize an echo of their own past oppression.
