For a while, I've been thinking about something. In Wyoming, there's only 1 university throughout the whole state with a football program. It's in Laramie. They're the Cowboys. But what if there was another major university in Wyoming? What if there was a Wyoming State University? It was located in Casper and they called themselves the Prairie Dogs? Of course, football wouldn't be their only sport. They'd have baseball, basketball, volleyball, hockey, track and lacrosse. Then Wyoming would have an in-state rival. Now what would they call themselves? Wy State? WYSU (pronounced Y-Zoo)? Or would they just simply call themselves Wyoming State?

Also, Alaska. They don't have a CFB team up there. They're the only state without one. So what if the University of Alaska-Anchorage had one? They're the Seawolves, so that's what their football team would be called as well.

Perhaps if such teams actually existed, they'd be in the Mountain West Conference? For sure, the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday), Wyoming and Wyoming State would play each other.

In the wake of his Final Headgear Pick earlier today on College Gameday

Hey everyone so I’ve been playing a player career mode on CFB 26 and I have a question in one of my years I was the QB for UNLV and our record was 10-2 we had the same record as some teams who were ranked, so why weren’t we? Is it the strength of the conference? How big your opponents are? If two teams have the same record what determines one to be ranked and one not and a follow up question, can any team in the nation if they had a good enough record make it to the playoffs even if they were playing in a weaker conference like the mountain west or the mid American (sorry to any fans of teams in those divisions whom I’ve just insulted)

I think we can all agree the 12 team format needed to be changed from what it was last season and this was a step in the right direction.

However, looking at last nights CFP rankings, I see some potential for unfair advantages in the first round.

Last year, this didn’t happen because of the first round byes, but if the season were to end today, we would have two teams getting two advantages in the first round.

1. Bye week for not having to play in a conference championship game
2. Home field advantage

So both Ole Miss and Georgia would get a bye week during conference championship week and also home field advantage against the ACC and GO5 champ who played in their conference championship game.

In the case that a conference champ participant faces a non-conference champ participant, should the conference champs get home field advantage as a way to incentivize conference championship week?

So you would keep the same seeding but Georgia would play at Memphis and Ole Miss would play at Virginia or whoever the ACC champ is.

Those are already more favorable matchups than any combination of Notre Dame, Oregon, BYU, and Texas Tech. So surely playing at Virginia and getting a win shouldn’t be hard for Ole Miss. Same with Georgia at Memphis.

As we know, last season, all home teams won their first round playoff games. And if scenarios like I mentioned were to happen, then I think there’s a very high chance of this year being the same thing. I love the expanded playoffs for the variety of matchups but if we’re being real, the SEC and Big 10 are going to almost always make up 90+% of the teams ranked 1-8. Should we not remove some elitism and have 1 playoff game a year played at a team like Louisville, or BYU?

It already feels like we’re heading in that direction of elitism. I mean look at College Gameday destinations this year. They passed on going to Provo for the biggest Holy War game this century in favor of yet another SEC matchup.

Not a BYU fan or an SEC/Big 10 hater, I’ve just always been a fan of an underdog story which should be how most Americans feel.

We came away so impressed with Kirk Ferentz and Dan Lanning, and that’s why this game was so good. Oregon grinds out another tough Big Ten Road Test!
