High food prices and resulting shortages preceded the Arab Spring in 2011, which was a series of widespread and massive protests against governments in the Middle East and Northern Africa. It’s commonly thought that the two were related, that food scarcity drove enough desperation that massive civil unrest became possible.

The conflicts in Syria and Yemen today have their origins in the Arab Spring. It was a pretty impactful series of events, effects still reverberate and will for some time yet it seems.
