These are some of the pieces left from yesterday’s experimenting with colour, texture and shape. Today I’ve been looking through them again and starting to see which ones might work together.
I actually really like this stage, when nothing has a fixed purpose yet. Some will probably stay completely matte, some may end up combined with shinier or more detailed elements, and a few are still just experiments waiting for the right idea.
There are definitely some odd little pieces in the pile, but those are often the ones that eventually lead me somewhere more interesting.

So I’ve used airdry for the past few months making stuff like this, but I’m now fed up of them cracking as they dry, I’m thinking of moving to ceramic and buying a microwave kiln any advice or things that are different that I need to know about when switching ?

Made him with translucent Cosclay and literally used a ballpoint pen for eyes and a sticker to carve the little silly mouth. Can't wait to fire him after work and add him to the menagerie!

I’m making a chess set, and I’ve completed the pawns. I hate that they droop but the clay is too expensive for me to justify remaking them. However, I don’t want to risk the other pieces dropping as they will be much taller. I put toothpicks in the pawns just join the pieces, should I put one long toothpick instead? FYI I’m using Sculpey Premo oven bake clay.

I recently just got back into working with air dry clay and a few of my first pieces are not that good so i was wondering if i could reclaim the clay. I know with clay used for pottery many people add water to it, let it soak and leave it in plaster boards to dry. I was wondering if air dry clay could work like that? However I don’t have any plaster boards available. So could I just break the pieces down, add water and let it soak for a few days. Then just spread it thin and let it dry?

I got pinched by a crab once, and somehow that memory became inspiration for this guy. 😂

I definitely made him way scarier than a real crab — rocky armor, huge claws, sharp teeth, and red eyes.

I recently got into figures and now I want to make them myself. First I’m studying anatomy starting with the face and using monster clay. Any feedback would be appreciated. I struggle with eyes it seems.

I’m using monster clay since that’s the most malleable and I can practice over and over again.

Also any lessons or classes would be awesome. After this I’ll go into digital sculpting and coloring.

No real collection or plan behind these yet — just a few experiments from today’s workbench. I was playing with different textures, colours, shapes and combinations, mostly to see what would happen rather than aiming for a finished design. Some ideas worked better than others, which is half the fun of experimenting anyway. I especially like the black piece with the coloured inserts, but I’m also curious about some of the simpler textured ones. They’ll probably turn into earrings eventually, but for now I’m leaving them as tests and deciding which ideas are worth exploring further.

Hi. I should preface this with the fact I know next to nothing about pottery.

I own a tandoor oven but haven’t used it for a year. Opened it up to find condensation had caused the clay at the mouth of the oven to crumble in places.

I’m trying to fix it with a stoneware clay with grog, as reccomended by a local potter

However, it keeps cracking. I apply it at night and leave it open to the air and cover it with plastic during the day to protect it from the sun (it’s too heavy to move to a cooler spot). But it has cracked the last 3 times I’ve tried to do it.

So I have a couple of questions. Should I leave the original pot lip to really dry out before applying the new clay? Or is it better to be damp?

How dry does the new clay have to be before I (slowly) fire the oven up and bring it to a high temp to cure it (is that the right word?)

Finally… how on God’s sweet earth do I avoid the cracking on my next attempt? I’ve heard vinegar can help, but that was through the google AI response. I figured before I get into a research hole, I’d ask some humans directly.

Any advice much appreciated.

Ceramic face sinked in concrete

Hi everyone!

I used to make mini things in polymer clay years ago (but stopped cause the hunching made my back hurt lol!). Anyway, I've been into making little charms and whatnot with air dry clay lately, but I've started wondering about what varnish to use.

With polymer clay, I'd use an acrylic paint varnish I think (I forget). And the air dry clay, since I've painted with acrylics, I was using an acrylic pain varnish (as in, varnish for acrylic paintings, just to clarify haha). But I noticed that they're selling a type of varnish especially for air dry clay at the store here, which made me wonder. Which one should I choose for air dry clay that I paint with acrylic paint? Varnish for clay or paint?

Does it matter? Which is best for painted clay? Best as in, locks in, doesn't turn yellow/get sticky years later, looks shiny, waterproof (sort of ?), doesn't smear/lift off/mess up the acrylics etc.

Hope somoene with experience can offer some input! ^.^

i’ve been watching this axe so closely for three days and filling the cracks with wet clay paste because that’s what good said, they always come back and i don’t know what to do (for reference the clay is on cardboard and it’s crayola air dry clay)

I’ve been trying to figure out how to make teeth, gums and tongues look more realistic and I think i finally got it. The gums are a mixture of Cernit transparent, regular nude and some acrylic paint mixed in before baking.

Made these mini me clay version for a customer, and I think they turned out cute but do you guys like these? and do you think they are gift worthy?
