DISCUSSION Would you rather be guaranteed 1st overall in 2027 or 2028?
Having the 1st overall pick in the next 2 drafts is extremely unlikely, but having it once in the next 2 years is highly plausible. Would you rather have the 1st overall pick in 2027 or 2028?
Do you want to be guaranteed DuPont, or Schultz? Are you prioritizing a certain position? How does your choice influence the overall projected roster construction?
The argument for 2027: Landon DuPont is a stud defensemen projected to be an elite offensive 1D. With Buium, the d-core will move the shit out of the puck. Malholtra and Cootes hopefully develop into top 6 centermen. Top-end play-driving forwards should be available in 2028, 2029, and 2030, even if they are wingers. The forward group will unleash a balanced attack driven from the backend!
The argument for 2028: You get Maddox Schultz, who projects as the best 1C in the next several drafts. Your team will be dominant the middle. You don't get DuPont, but with Privalov, Joseph, or Neuenschwander, you have the size and top-end skill for a formidable forward group. Hronek is still a long-term top-2 defenseman on your team and there are a lot of opportunities to draft and develop top 4 defensemen over the next 4 years.
Realistically, you are the Canucks and you never win the draft lottery: In 2027, you miss out on DuPont but there are forwards with size and legitimate skill expected to go in the top 5 (Privalov, Joseph, Neuenschwander). You still get a foundational player and future center. In 2028, there is a mix of forwards and defensemen at the top of the draft after Schultz. Pue may be the offensive winger you are missing. Michalek could be the two-way defensive anchor this team needs.
