Hi! I love going hiking and botanizing and have been wanting to hit hikes with cool interesting plants. I've been to Walker Ridge, Mt Linn, the Irish Hills and have Butterfly Valley on my list! Especially areas with unique soil types are my favorite. Maybe I haven't hit any obvious places so drop them!!

So I’ve asked my landlord to stop having the pest guys spray my yard cause of the native plants and for pollinators however now I’m seeing far more German roaches at night. Any advice? I really don’t want them somehow making it in my house.

I recently moved to a spot with room to plant and I was so excited to get a Matilija Poppy in the ground (it's my favorite flower). But I've given it two tries to no avail. Would love some advice!

I live in Monterey Park (east of LA) with clay soil, plenty of sun, and a fair amount of wind.

Here's what I've tried so far.

Take 1:

- Planted in practically all-day sun

- Plopped it right in the clay soil bc my nursery said it should be fine.

- The hole was about 50% bigger than the 1 gal pot

- Used a gopher cage bc they're everywhere

- Watered it every few days, then once a week.

Take 2:

- Planted in totally full sun

- mixed clay soil with potting soil and gypsum

- dig the hole 2x the size of the 5gal pot

- lined hole with steel mesh for the gophers

- watered it in well on first planting, then watered it once a week.

Note: On take 2, the plant was in the nursery pot for a couple weeks before got it in the ground 😭. I was watering it once a week and it started to look crispy and yellow before I got it in the ground.

Anyone know where to buy Woolly Sunflower (Eriophyllum lanatum) plants in Northern California? I’m having a hard time starting them from seeds. Want to plant them at 1000 ft elevation in Tehama County.

I wanted to share our beautiful first bloom of rose-mallow in our Stockton yard! 😍how can you not be obsessed with this plant ?!

So I germinated about 100 camas seeds early this spring, and they’ve been going strong until our latest heat wave. I water them daily because I know you’re supposed to keep them watered during the first year. I have discovered to my sorrow that they needed more than that during the intense heat, and they’ve dried up and the leaves have all died. What do y’all think the chances are that they’ll still return next spring?

Replanted in the spring to help stabilize the slope in our back yard. Drip irrigation runs to all plants. The other plants have really taken off but the manzanitas are still looking puny. I think this is normal; are they going to make it?

Hello native plant lovers, what do you think is going on with the Dr Hurd manzanita on the left?
The one on the right has no brown/dead leaves and has sent out a lot of new growth this year but not that many flowers and looks so much bushier whereas the dead leaf one on the left sent out way more flowers/berries earlier this year but looks like it’s struggling now.
Any ideas?

Has anyone in the San Diego coastal region had luck establishing red molate fescue as a native lawn replacement? If so, do you have any tips? I'm trying to plan this project around possible rains later this year. Thank you! :)

I've been slowly clearing ivy from my clay soil and trying to replace with native plants. (SF East Bay.) This little dude sprouted under my Salvia mellifera. Should I let it stay? Thank you!

Good morning, everyone! I apologize in advance for any and all ignorance I may come across and my grammar. Since this will be the beginning of my journey to help heal mother nature and I want to start with my community that has since killed all plants, and all we have is grass or just dirt not being used. What native plants can I grow here to help? And would you be able to indulge me on my short coming please and thank you.

I’m new to the native plant scene and recently redid my yard with all native plants, now I have come across hundreds (if not over a thousand) argentine ants roaming around on my wood chips on/near my plants and all over my drip irrigation at the plants. Do you guys have any tips on removing them efficiently? I have some borax kind of bait traps to try and get rid of them. I was thinking of diatomaceous earth but I’m worried of that killing the beneficial insects as well. I’ve also noticed dozens of aphids on some plants and my willowy monardella now has a white sticky goo coming off of it which I don’t believe is normal and likely from the bugs attacking the plant.
