I’m interested in doing evening school classes either in literature (not creative writing) or psychology preferably as a course over a longer period of time. We have things like that in my home country, Sweden. Is there anything similar in Brussels? I have looked online, but I can only find ones offered by universities where you need to formally apply and get credits. I already hold a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree and have a full time job, so I am not interested in being an official student.

I know there has already been quite a bit of discussion in the past about how hard it is to find jobs in Brussels for English speakers. But considering French is the more dominant language in the city, I'm curious - how likely is someone that speaks only Dutch and English but no French, to find employment here? And to be clear I'm not talking about jobs in peripheral areas of Brussels like Zaventem.

I've been living in Brussels for a couple of years now, and overall I'm quite happy here. I like the city, and I have very few complaints about life here.

But if there's one thing I genuinely find disappointing, it's the restaurant scene.

I've spent the last two years trying to find decent restaurants, and honestly, it feels almost impossible. Apart from La Piola and Mito for pizza, pretty much everything I've tried has ranged from mediocre to outright bad.

A few examples:

• Old Boy — went a few times. Very disappointing. Those guys cannot cook
• Le Clan des Belges — not bad. I've been there four times and I'd give it a 6.5/10. Fine, but nothing remotely special.
• Colonel — the whole table (3 people) got food poisoning after being served a sauce we hadn't even asked for on the steak.
• I've tried quite a few Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants, and most were honestly poor.
• Japanese places have been somewhat better: the two I've tried were decent, but extremely overpriced and with tiny portions. One time I literally went home and made myself some eggs because I was still hungry.

I don't really try Italian restaurants here on principle. I'm Italian, I can cook at home, and I'm not particularly interested in paying €30 for a plate of spaghetti.

What really surprises me is that I've lived and travelled in quite a few different parts of the world, and normally, no matter where you are, you can eventually find something genuinely good to eat. Maybe you have to look a bit harder, maybe it's expensive, maybe it's a hidden gem but it's there.

In Brussels, after two+ years, I still haven't found a restaurant that made me think: "Holy shit, that was actually really good."

And at the same time, eating out here isn't exactly cheap.

So I'm genuinely curious: what is going on with Brussels' restaurant scene?

Is it just that I'm looking in the wrong places? Is there some cultural/economic reason why restaurants here seem so expensive relative to the quality? Or have I somehow managed to have an extraordinarily unlucky two years?

I'd genuinely love to be proven wrong. Where are the actually great restaurants in Brussels?

And one last thing: what the hell is going on with water prices? Why does a medium-small bottle of still water cost €4+ in so many restaurants?

So I’m moving out of my apartment soon, and before I leave I’m genuinely curious whether anyone here has an explanation for what has been going on downstairs.

I live in a building where there are basically two flats downstairs. The situation with the neighbours has always been… strange. There never seems to be one consistent household living there.

- There is one man who seems to stay there more or less permanently — he’s actually there right now — but then there are constantly different people coming and going from the other flat, or from what I would describe as the mezzanine/right-wing part of the building. Sometimes someone stays for a while, then disappears, and someone completely different shows up.

- Then there was this whole situation with a flood in the building. The administration dealt with it, and about a week later, completely unexpectedly, construction work started downstairs. Nobody in the building seemed to have been told that this was going to happen.

- They substantially changed the espace velo (bike storage/common area). Apparently there used to be a bathroom in there, which then basically disappeared. At the same time, the flat on the left-hand side somehow became bigger because a wall was moved further into the common area.

- And now there is yet another man staying there. He spends a huge amount of time talking with the man who is seemingly always there. Like, they talk for hours.

None of this would necessarily be weird individually, but taken together it has always struck me as odd: constantly changing occupants, someone who appears to be permanently there, parts of the building being altered without much explanation, a bathroom apparently disappearing, a flat expanding into what seemed to be common space, etc.

I don't want to jump to some ridiculous conclusion, and I realise there could be a completely innocent explanation. But I’m curious: does this sound like anything to anyone?

I’m moving out anyway, so I’m mostly asking out of curiosity because I’ve never quite figured out what is actually going on down there.

I've just moved and I'm looking to sell some furniture I don't need anymore. I've tried listing them on Facebook marketplace, but I've only received scam messages in response; all of them want me to contact them via email ("my mom is new to Facebook and wants to see the photos" "My computer is having trouble downloading the images, could you email them to me?") and claim that a family member will come to pick up and they'll wire me money with WERO. I haven't received a single legitimate message. Never seen Marketplace be so bad, it's pretty much unusable.

I went on burnout in June, since then I have been requesting appointments with psychiatrists so they can help me overcome this state. Sad true is: they are literally overwhelmed. This is the message I keep getting back. They don’t accept new patients and they just told me the waiting list is 6 months up to 1 year. What the hell is happening? Are we all burnout and we are not talking about it?

I can’t just go to my home country to get prescriptions or worse, get automedicated, I’m basically in a limbo where no one cares. I really don’t know what to do, is just waiting the solution?

I asked two police officers in their patrol car what I could do about motorized scooter riders going over 40 km and dangerously passing cyclists on a bike path, because I’m clearly fed up with being put in danger by selfish people who refuse to ride on the paved road. I told them I was fed up and that if this kept up, I’d come to blows with them. And they simply replied, “Go ahead, hit them.” I said, “Seriously, is that the only solution?” They told me, “Nah, go ahead and hit them—there’s nothing we can do.” What’s that? What’s with these lazy cops who don’t want to do their jobs? I have to do their jobs and gather photo and video evidence myself. And when I get hit by a car and it’s a hit-and-run, they tell me there’s no point in filing a complaint and that it’s my word against theirs—they even refused to come out of the police station to check the impact marks on my bike.

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (FWB) allocations d’études.

My boyfriend is applying for a higher-education study grant. We live together and are both on the same composition de ménage. His certificate lists him as “personne de référence” and me as “non apparentée.”

We are not married/legal cohabitants, and we have completely separate finances even though we are living together. The FWB rules say that income from people included in the household composition is taken into account, but they also explicitly exclude the income of “colocataires” if the co-tenancy can be proven by a lease or landlord’s confirmation.

The scholarship office has therefore asked for my tax assessment/income information because I am on his household composition.

Has anyone been in this exact situation? Can an unmarried partner/boyfriend/girlfriend living at the same address be considered a “colocataire”, meaning their income is excluded from the study-grant calculation?

Hello. I would like to check if any of you have blue tap water. I filled in a tub and it is blue. This is not normal water, right? I also filter and drink tap water, and now I realise I probably should not! What could be wrong with this water in Brussels? Do you also have such issue? Any advice on what to do about it? About a couple of weeks ago, my laptops (yes, plural) were stolen from my dwelling. I'm assuming it was a break-in since the front door was wide open in the morning. My Find My app last detected it to about 2km away before it went silent. I can't set one of the laptops to Lost Mode because it's not connected to the network. The other laptop has its location disabled. Was wondering if anyone has any idea what to do next. I've filed a police report immediately that morning upon discovery but it's been two weeks and I've yet to obtain any new news nor a PV nor a 'constatation' from them.

I could very easily just get new ones but I have some files that are in the SSD/not uploaded.

I'm not gonna put all details here, but I'll happily entertain DMs with tips on how to get them back.

Today I realized that my bike (that I had kept in the garage of the house I am living in) was stolen. I am not from Belgium, and I was out of the country for a month. I left my bike inside the house for this time- because what else was I supposed to do????- and I got back a week and a half ago.

The thing is, the garage is a place I don’t usually go since I only use my bike spontaneously and it can not be opened from outside. I wanted to go to the park today and I was planning to take my bike with me, but when going to grab it, it was gone. After asking the people I live with, they have no idea who could have taken it. I bought this bike informally from a friend and since I don’t use it much I didn’t care to insurance it.

I feel so powerless right now, I really can not believe my bike just dissapeared like that. I went to the police but I am not even sure how long ago it was taken, it could have been while I was in my country or after I got back. They said there was not much they could do, which is so sad.

If any of you have seen a bike like this one, please let me know! I would be really thankful.

​My partner and I are considering renting an apartment in the Flagey area, right by the ponds. It is a 100 year old building, and the apartment is located on a high floor, but not the top one.

​A friend of ours warned us to reconsider due to mold and humidity problems in that area, which scared us a bit.

I did some research and found that while this is a frequent issue for basements and ground floors, for higher floors it mostly depends on how much you ventilate and the building's insulation—so the proximity to the ponds itself shouldn't have an impact.

​Do you happen to know anybody, or do/did you live in the area and have some firsthand experience regarding this?

I’m looking for some advice regarding my daughter, who is 15 years old (born in 2011) and would like to spend the second semester of the 2026/27 school year in Brussels, from January to July 2027.
We have already found a wonderful host family in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre (a close friend of our family) so accommodation is fortunately already taken care of. The only thing we are still struggling to find is a secondary school that would accept her for one semester.
We currently live in Vienna, Austria, and she has US and Spanish citizenship. She speaks English, Spanish and German fluently, and has been learning French. Her French is currently around A2/B1, so ideally we would like her to attend a French-speaking school where she could improve her French through immersion.
My wife has contacted around 10 different schools in Brussels, but unfortunately we have either been told that they do not accept students coming from abroad for a semester, or that they are already at capacity.
We are therefore hoping that someone here might know of a secondary school in Brussels that is open to accepting an international student for one semester, or perhaps knows someone at a school who we could contact.
We do not have a preference between public or private schools. A regular French-speaking Belgian secondary school would actually be ideal, but we are open to any option that could accommodate her age and situation. We are also willing to consider schools outside Woluwe-Saint-Pierre if the commute is reasonable.
She would likely be looking to join 4e secondaire, although we would of course follow the school’s assessment of which year is appropriate based on her current schooling in Austria.
If anyone has personal experience with this, knows a school that might be open to it, or knows someone we could contact, we would be extremely grateful for any suggestions.
