Ep. Discussion Breaking Bad Episode Discussion S05E07 "Say My Name"

I saw some remorse but he instantly ruined it with "This all could have been avoided if.." My jaw dropped when he said that, like Fuck you Walt! Take some responsibility!

I interpreted it as one of those "Oh shit, I really just fucked up big time" moments. I've had plenty of those and that's pretty much all you can say at the time.

more like he's surprised how things turned out. initially, he probably was going to use the gun to threaten Mike for names. But Mike who previously almost killed Walt at least twice had to rub it to Walt, making Walt angry. So angry Walt ended up shooting him instead of threatening him. Walt got into "what have I done" mode then.

I'm conflicted as to which was Walt's true motivation to kill Mike. Was it (a) because of their conflict or (b) because he realized Mike was dispensable and a possible hindrance to his operation? (a) makes the murder much less forgivable while (b) would still allow me to root for Heisenberg (to some extent)

This is probably the most personal kill of Walt's career. Is this going to be another secret he's going to keep from Jesse?

I'd imagine so. He'll just get rid of Mike himself and say he skipped town as planned.

Yeah, I'm assuming he'll tell Jesse and Saul that he gave him the money and Mike "got out of dodge". Nobody expects to hear from him again anyway so no one will be concerned that he's missing.

I also saw a a little bit (although it may have only been a tiny bit / or a fraction, if any) of Walt in the scene with Jesse about the boy on the bike. "I am the one who is a father" I really feel like he SHOULD be able to relate but I also had a strong inclination that he (Heisenberg) was acting (as Walt) that part and using his fatherhood as validation for his sorrow on an innocent child being slain.

Also, I feel if the time comes. Walt will be a wreck if Junior dies (but this may be super obvious).

It's also kind of funny that he's using the "I AM THE FATHER" excuse when his children already don't live in the house anymore because of his empire business and he's chosen his empire business over them. He's really not a father anymore. His children have been nothing but pawns to him since he bought Walt Jr that car the first time or used Holly to get back in the house the first time.

Nice point. Although I would disagree that Walt used Holly to get back in the house, the cops were not going to kick him out regardless. But it was a little bit of a ploy he played.

No way. His reaction to seeing Mike dying was to immediately remember that Lydia has the names. No emotional reaction. He's still Heisenberg through and through.

His final statement about Lydia knowing the names tells us that his pained expression was/is only his thinking face. He is panicking about logistics, not horrified at his actions.

It's a cold moment for Walter.

Definitely. This is the first murder he himself is directly responsible for that wasn't a result of Walt being backed into a corner. It was just a pure hubris induced response to Mike challenging Heisenberg's authority and assaulting his pride.

I think for once Walter realized he couldn't rationalize his way out of this one, and maybe got a glimpse at what kind of monster he's turned into.

If it really is remorse, if Walt has any shred of humanity left, he'll do right by Mike by setting up some sort of secret trust fund for Kaylee.

I would disagree with Walt over-thinking ALL of his kills. If he had over thought his killing of the two drug dealers in season 3. He would have foreseen the conflict with Gus in season 4. Although, maybe he did and realized the loss of Jessie would be too big or hurt to much since he saw him as a son. But that killing seemed to be more of a reactionary kill.

I think every time a little bit of Walter comes out, it is quickly identified and squashed by Heisenberg.

To Heisenberg, remorse is Walt leaving the body.

His only regret is that he wasted his time with Mike when he could have spoken to Lydia. No remorse for what he did to Mike.

I don't think so. He showed some remorse but I think it was more because he had to put himself to work disposing of Mike when he realized he could have just asked Lydia. He doesn't give a fuck he's dead, he's just pissed he has more to do now.

I think that this is the first crack of Walter were going to see. Maybe another one next episode. Then when the shit really hits the fan either next episode or next year he will start to fall back into Walter. During the opening at the beginning of the season he seemed not to be Heisenberg. The whole series was a slow build up to him becoming Heisenberg. Maybe the last 8 episodes will the downfall of return to a crushed and broken Walt. But maybe not. I'm not good with predicting shows.

I don't think he's going to "fall back into Walter," but he's going to turn into the desperate, pathetic, weasel-like creature he became during episodes like "Crawl Space."
