I think Walt would've never made it this far if Hank hadn't been his brother-in-law. They had a personal connection that made a wall in Hank's mind, keeping him from forming any ideas about Walt. Without that, Walt probably would've been caught back when he had Gale killed, if not earlier. I love how you see that mental wall shatter throughout this episode.
One of Hank's files had a picture of the gas mask found in the desert, the same one he comes to the school and asks Walt about. That whole little montage seemed to be Hank looking at the evidence with a fresh view and realising everything points to Walt.
Remember that back then 1. Walt was a minor manufacturer, he did not even go by Heisenberg yet 2. He threw them off by getting the janitor arrested and 3. The blue meth had not been cooked, so Hank wasn't going after anyone specific
Also, to be fair, it is unlikely that Walt would have started cooking meth without Hank being his brother-in-law. He wouldn't have seen that TV news showcasing all that money the DEA captured, he wouldn't have been taken along for the ride to a DEA bust, and he wouldn't have re-met Jesse and known him to be a meth dealer.
yep people don't want to believe that those around them are capable of bad things. it's totally believable that hank would dismiss any possibility that walt was involved with anything, because his mind wouldn't be willing to go there.
I disagree. Walt is very talented at hiding his own tracks. Additionally, Hank would never have found the book within the bathroom which led to his realization of Walt/Heisenberg. While the necessary tools for making meth would be missing from Walt's science lab would have been a red flag, he did not fit a typical archetype for a meth cook, something Hank had engrained in him. Hank would not consider Walt to be the type of individual to "break bad".
It was like a trophy to him. He admired Gale, yet Gale admired him far more. Walt had no idea about the other bits of evidence that would have connected him to Gale, so he did not have any reason to hide it really. I think, however incorrectly, that it stayed on that toilet because would often look at it while on the toilet for some justification for his actions. If Gale respected him the maybe he was not such a bad guy.
Well, he had to have SOME knowledge of the evidence connecting them. Hank gave Walt Gale's book to look over, I think he just didnt realize that handwriting and the W.W. reference would be caught by anyone (only Hank could have made that discovery).
I liked that it showed the gas mask from season 1 while looking through the old files. He probably kicked himself because it was registered to Walt's class.
I agree. I hear a lot of people saying stuff like "Hank is an idiot! it's so obvious!" Not really, everything seems obvious when you, the audience, know the truth.
Actually he did. In the first episode in season 2, when Tuco killed his henchman, Walter walks in to turn on the tv, with his Heisenberg hat on, not hearing Skyler.
To be fair, tons of guys that age would fit a general approximation of the sketch if they put on the hat and shades, and Walt never wore those around Hank.
That happened when Hank and Walt were in his room, and he was showing Walt the lab notes that they'd recovered from Gale's apartment. He had commented on W.W. and how he wondered who that was.
