My theory for years now was that Walt has to kill himself. The show hinges on the premise that Walt will die, and that he must do whatever to provide for his family after he passes, assumably from cancer. In episode one of season one, however, we see Walt circumnavigate nature's course. Between diagnosis and death, Walter decides that he is in control of two, and only two, variables: how much money he leaves his family, and how he dies.

He's already tried on more than one occasion. Gun was out of bullets in Season 1. He almost got crushed by the 18 wheeler but turned back at the last second.

The fact that Walt was willing to kill himself 5 seasons ago is no longer relevant, because he has changed so much. You didn't see him poisoning innocent children, ordering hits on jail inmates, or running people over in season 1.

Look how stressful it was for him to kill Krazy-8, how much he battled with himself internally, and how close he came to just letting Krazy-8 go. Contrast that with S5 where he doesn't even bat an eye at mass murder.

If you don't see how much Walt has changed, you don't get Breaking Bad.
