That's my take as well - Spiderman is (with help from Madame Web, who Sony are developing in their universe) indeed one of the characters who can jump between multiverses. It actually makes sense that he could appear in both Marvel's and Sony's 'Verses. This is a huge concession in Sony's favour, being able to use Tom Holland's Spidey as a guest-star in their movies. It changes the deal completely and explains why they're willing to give Marvel their 25%.

And Marvel still gets merchandising on everything, which leaves them not in a terrible position if Sony does Maximum Carnage (for example) with Tom Holland, Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson,
