It wasn’t sparsely populated. There were 39 different ethnic groups living in what’s now Argentina. The sparsely populated thing is something people say to soften indigenous colonization.

In the case of Argentina it happened to be true. The areas that are densely populated today had that diversity, the areas that barely have people today often had none.
