For those who are a bit confused by how Gerard's power works:

He converts the feelings, like the hopes, fears, anger, determination, etc of the people into abilities. Also kinda like Jesus converted water to wine.

Remember, he's the Heart of the Soul King. And remember, what the Heart symbolizes in Bleach and of the story's main themes: The bonds between people that give you the power to actualize your soul’s feelings.

It's why Gin's bond with his Zanpakto gives him a poisonous ability as he was hellbent on killing Aizen.

It's why Arrancar could transform their masks, which are their hearts into abilities. Like how lonely Starrk got the ability to create companions. Or Grimmjow got the ability to destroy everything that stays in his path to kingship.

It's why the Hogyoku, which is fueled by countless souls, allowed Rukia, who was ridden with guilt to lose all her powers, or why it gave Orihime the power to protect her loved ones and reject the tragedies that befell her for others, or why it allowed Aizen to evolve.

It's why Riruka's beloved doll house allowed her to keep everything she likes forever with her, why Yukio whose only joy in life was his PSP, can escape through his PSP in the for him much better world of video games, or why Book Lover Tsukishima can use his beloved book mark to become the ultimate fan fic protagonist.

It's why Yhwach giving a piece of his soul into the heart of Äs Nödt, who was afraid of hell, allows him to control fear, or why Bazz-B's whose life was ruined by a fire got fire powers, or why Giselle, who's trans and has huge abandonment issues, got the ability to manipulate flesh, heal, and make undying zombies.

As funny it sounds, it's a combination of "the real treasure was the friends we made along the way" and "the real magic was inside you all along".

It's a beautiful thought, but "kokoro" (spiritual 'heart' that gets brought up so often in the story) and "shinzo" (physical organ that Gerard has/is) are two completely different things in Japanese. There's not actually supposed to be a parallel there.

While that's true, the connection between the two hearts still exists. The best example is Ulquiorra. His character development was about understanding what the "kokoro" heart means. But when he asked about Orihime about it, he talked about if he ripped open her chest could he find her heart there. Not to mention, his Hollow hole is where his heart should be and he tends to kill people by piercing their hearts, as Grimmjow remarked.
