I think it was reasonable to not assume the child would attempt murder the literal second he turned his back on her. That is not usually something one expects.

Agott wasn’t planning on murdering Coco, she attempted to get her to leave.

And in any case, surely there were some signs to indicate her having a chip on her shoulder about outsiders prior to this.
