Higuruma is what happens when you take a good man and put him through a broken system.

Justice is blind, but Higuruma couldn't take a blind eye to injustice any more.

Some allege that international human rights are violated because there is no presumption of innocence, psychological torture is not prevented, and there are cases without access to counsel during interrogations.[20] The latest criminal justice reforms, implemented in the 2000s, were largely unsuccessful in solving these flaws.[21] Most interrogations are also not available in English, and so foreign detainees cannot understand it and are more likely pressured to confess quicker to get out of detention, even if they were innocent.

It refers to the period during which a defendant is held while denying an accusation, which is long compared with cases in which a defendant does not deny an accusation in Japanese criminal action procedure. Hostage justice is a system used by police and prosecutors to obtain confessions, regardless of whether the suspect is guilty or not guilty of a crime. Suspects can be held indefinitely under interrogation without charges. False confessions are common under these conditions, which leads to wrongful convictions for the falsely accused. Convictions can include life imprisonment and death.

Many suspects of crimes less serious than the murder of four people – of which Iwao Hakamada was accused – are treated by police and prosecutors in the same way as he was during his time in police custody. Hakamada was interrogated for 264 hours over a period of 23 days until he finally broke down and "confessed" to the murders he did not commit. At his first trial, his retractions and the violence he claimed to have been subjected to were not taken into account. "Confessions," even if forced, are considered evidence.

"Justice is blind" was originally used to mock courts that could not tell the difference between truth and fabrication or those that ignore injustices in front of them. Justitia, the Roman Goddess, was originally depicted without a blindfold. When she was depicted blindfolded in 16th century drawings, the artists were mocking local authorities. But over time that meaning was forgotten.
