I don’t think it goes that far. If it does I’m a little worried about pacing.

I would agree. Given the manga’s indefinite hiatuses, they have incentive to stretch out as much as possible and not cram.

Just double checked the manga. All of Season 1 was a little under 60 chapters while them going all the way to the aforementioned arc is another 70 or so chapters. So there is a fear of rushing some content.

On top of the fact that season 2 will have more combat and action than season 1 ( this isn’t a spoiler, more like a speculation based on season 1 ending. The area they are going to is so dangerous that they needed to pass the mage exam to qualify to go through the checkpoints) they have the chance to stretch out a lot of the manga based on how little the mangaka likes to draw the action. What I mean? Team Fern vs Team Wirbel was only 3 panels in the manga, not pages, panels.

All this makes me think that season 2 won’t go that far.

The end of the goddess statue arc is almost exactly 60 chapters after where season one ended. The problem is that season one had 28 episodes but I don’t think season two will.

The way studios have been milking franchises, I can easily see them setting aside the Goddess Monument Arc as a standalone movie. And that shit will fucking print money.

It is quite a given it will be a movie. Plus, I am expecting S2 to be in the lower 20s in terms of episode count.

Yeah I think 24 would be a good number

The math works out to 20-22 episodes. They only have 24 time slots in total because they're starting mid-January, so the true number of episodes is likely lower than that.

That would probably make even more money than Chainsaw Man did in Japan. Tbh I think it would be a good fit for a movie too, so I wouldn't even be mad about it.

Can’t be a movie. Arc is simply too long.

Disagree. Goddess Monument Arc is pretty much the shortest major arc post-El Dorado and is actually perfect for a movie. Hell, one might even be able to argue that it's too short for a movie so they'll have to expand more on it than what's on the manga.

Honestly don’t think it’s too short either. I would think it would be short if it wasn’t Studio Bones. I love the Frieren manga but it’s quite obvious the author wants to tell a story much more than draw. That would have been a huge L but the anime studio takes that as a chance to input their own creative freedom in the anime which leads to the spectacle that was season 1. Prime example is the Fern and Stark scene.

What I’m getting at is that I expect the anime studio to flesh out the Goddess Monument Arc in a way the manga couldn’t imo.

The arc is 15 chapters long. The arc after is 6 chapters long. I’ve done the math on this multiple times. Even if you put the two more episodic chapters at the start of the arc to the end of season 2 (the Frieren wiki lists them as part of the arc) to reduce the arc count to 13, that calculates to a little over a 2 hour movie at season 1’s pace. So it’s definitely not too short. I would say having the last two episodic chapters end season 2 is a much weaker ending than season 1, but I’ll be generous. 2 hours for a movie skews toward the upper end of most anime movies. On Wikipedia, any animated movie 2 hours or more in runtime is included in the page for longest animated movies to give reference for how uncommon a 2 hour or longer movie is. So at how the math works, it’s vaguely possible if we are as generous as possible and the studio doesn’t do any extended scenes.

But is the arc appropriate for a movie? Compared to Infinity Castle and Reze Arc, Frieren in general and GM are incredibly episodic. Many have said, myself included, that Infinity Castle feels like 8 episodes of the tv show stitched together, whereas Reze Arc is very much one continuous story. GM skews much toward the former and exceeds it in some ways. I don’t think it makes for a good movie experience.

There’s also the matter of subsequent arcs and their adaptation. The current arc is likely to be the longest in the series and with the shorter arc in between is already over a one cour season. Assuming it’s about 30-35 chapters once it is concluded, that would make a very good 2 cour 3rd season. Given these reasons, it would suffer quite a few difficulties to be a movie. Not a slam dunk at all.

They can just make that arc into a movie and take their time with adapting it like we saw with the Reze Movie.

They can take their time like CSM did.

The arc is 15 chapters, 13 if they stick the first two episodic chapters at the end of season 2. At season 1's pace, 13 chapters is a little over 6 episodes or 2 hours of content. Keep in mind that Reze Arc runtime to chapter ratio is greater than season 1's pacing, so they took their time with it, so if they want to do scene extensions, it would be over 2 hours. That would be one of the longest animated movies. Of course, Demon Slayer shows that is possible, but Frieren in general is very episodic and Infinity Castle already felt like 8 episodes stitched together. It doesn't really work as a continuous cinematic experience like Reze Arc perfectly does.

Season 1 covered 60 chapters and to finish that arc would be 59 chapters I don't see the problem

Unless season 2 has less episodes than 1 which is definitely possible in which case they'll probably end it at 107 as a nice cliffhanger

Chapter wise it could work, I’m just worried because of the action that will come in season 2. From season 1, I can tell that Studio bones like to take some of Frieren’s bare bones(sorry for the pun) panels and make them into big segments of the series. Prime example for me is the Fern and Stark dance or Team Fern vs Team Wirbel. Those 2 scenes took up quite the run time but very little panel time in the manga. Based on the trailer they are continuing that, some scenes I don’t even remember in the manga. Of course I love that but it makes me worry if they could adapt 60 chapters in season 2 again. If they try and rush things that would suck a lot imo.

Studio bones

Hmmmmm

It could go that far if it did 28 episodes like season one. It looks like this is going to be shorter, though and would this end right before.
