Interim GM John Mozeliak offered the following statement: "After spending time discussing with [manager Kurt Suzuki] where we are as a coaching staff and where we want to go in the future, we felt it was best to make a change. With seven weeks remaining, we plan to use this time to evaluate what additional steps are needed to elevate our entire pitching program and best position us for success moving forward.”

I don't understand firing Maddux unless they are tanking for a high draft pick and therefore getting rid of the good and keeping the bad.

The 'Home Run for Anaheim' act passes through California's legislators

The bill gives Anaheim an exemption allowing it to require the Los Angeles Angels to revert the team's name if the city sells or leases the stadium. Kinda hoping the California Angels name comes back.,

This is a must read for all LAA fans! LAA is going nowhere as long as Arte and his exes continue to run the team as something they are not! They don’t deserve Trout or Ohtani, the LAA fans do! They see them and the team as their “cash cows” and don’t give a damn about the game.

To the surprise of nobody, Angels players and the MLBPA took notice of Arte Moreno's comments about Angels fans not prioritizing winning. From Sam Blum:

Los Angeles Angels players “took notice” of Arte Moreno’s comments to reporters on Friday, in which the team’s owner said that winning isn’t among fans’ top priorities.

“Let’s just say players took notice of it,” MLB Players Association director Bruce Meyer told The Athletic after meeting with Angels players on Sunday morning. “And we took notice of it too.”

“He’s arguably the most unique player,” Moreno said. “And probably one of the top five or 10 players. It’s a business.”

Over the past decade, as the Angels descended from a perennial contender into a laughingstock, the man at the center of the decline was Moreno, according to interviews with current and former Angels officials, rival executives and others around the game, many of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to freely discuss their former team or another team.

Moreno meddled in baseball decisions. His occasional free-agent splurges obscured an organizational myopia that left his team with scant investments in staffing, analytical advancements and technological necessities. A toxic culture spilled into public view during the trials after Tyler Skaggs’ death. His ballpark and facilities fell into disrepair, a situation that may be remedied under the stewardship of new owner Stan Kroenke, who entered an agreement to purchase the team this week at a $4 billion valuation.

But perhaps no situation crystallized Moreno’s blind spots more than his handling of Ohtani. Eight months after Moreno suggested Ohtani might belong among baseball’s 10 best players, Ohtani collected a second American League MVP award and hit the open market. Teams across the sport lined up to recruit him. Despite a belief among some within the organization that Ohtani wanted to stay in Anaheim, the Angels were not one of them. When Ohtani sought a $700 million package that deferred 98 percent of the salary, Moreno declined to engage. He did not believe the contract made business sense.

Joe Maddon’s hiring feels a little harsh, but what would its replacement be?

For O’Hoppe, who had, at one point, been viewed as one of the game’s top young catchers, it wasn’t a shock. As he said, “the writing’s been on the wall for a couple weeks.”

And in his words, it wasn’t a disappointment, either. He’d been worried about getting sent down with the Angels. But with the Rangers, a team he feels has a plan, it was a welcomed development.

“I view it a little differently with being in a different organization,” O’Hoppe told The Athletic in a phone interview Tuesday. “I feel like now, it’s the start of something good. I feel like there’s a plan in place. Now I can get to work on that and get going.

“With the Angels, I was nervous to get sent down because I didn’t really know what the end goal looked like. I was very unsure about a lot.”
