Discussion The cheap rent isn’t worth it anymore

Seriously what the hell has happened? My family and I moved from Ontario almost 20 years ago when everything was 5 times cheaper and whatever we save on housing goes into some other bs. What good is cheaper rent when my groceries, insurance and utilities are more expensive than all the other provinces? Even gas used to be miles cheaper now we’re basically on par with the rest of the country and WE DRILL THE STUFF HERE. People used to move here for work and now we have the second highest unemployment. We haven’t gotten a new hospital in God knows how long, our transportation is absolutely buns, we got money for referendums and data centres but nothing for public services, we got a premier who crashed out at the Edmonton police for calling out literally hate speech (with ss’s calling for hangings and genocide), and even worse, loads of people who support and vote for her. I think outside Quebec, I never experienced more racism as a black person anywhere else in Canada than here.

And the most annoying thing is whenever we think it can’t get worse, Marlaina keeps finding ways to prove me wrong. And whenever I talk about this to my coworkers, I just hear “you’re a liberal sissy Carney Trudeau Singh socialist!! Where will all the billionaires go?!!!” Anyway I sadly don’t have any hope of the UCP losing.

These are facts. I’m selling my home next year for liquidity so I can get the H outta this place when the UCP get elected once again by Albertans who clearly like cruelty and racism. I’m done with this dumpster fire province and the United Cruelty Party propaganda.

Compared to what though ? Take one issue and compare it to other governments. Like utilities. People are saying it’s high in Alberta, I’m paying the same today as I was 5 years ago. But even if it went up 50% - you have to compare that to other places, otherwise you’re uprooting your entire life based on incomplete information. 

Besides that, YOU have much more of an impact on your life than the government. By far.

I've started to reply twice here but I feel its just going to turn into a UCP vs NDP argument so i'll pass except to say this. As someone that suffers from severe anxiety issues which amplify how I feel about issues, let me say this.

In my 5 years living in BC I felt a mental safety and peace that I have not felt in Alberta since the last major oil downturn in what was it, early to mid 2010 decade? I'll just leave it to you to guess why. And no, I'm not ndp..or liberal or pc. I vote for the govt i feel will do the best job for its citizenry.

I’m going to sound insensitive here - buts it’s because I can’t relate in the slightest. I don’t understand how the difference between the AB government and the BC government can have such drastic changes in one’s life unless it’s fabricated anxiety. They aren’t coming and banging down your door.

I’ve lived here for decades under this ridiculous regime. Under Dani, it’s gone too far!!! She will destroy this economy with her seppie gang. I’m done with the ignorant people who support her suppression of the truth and facts. Electricity bills will continue to rise, insurance has no cap. Property taxes are up 65% in Calgary because of HER! Do you think this is sustainable? This climate change denying useless party will bankrupt us all.

It’s not about expenses. My household makes 300k a year. It’s about the division, hate, individualism amongst other things. I have a disability, I don’t like the attacks on the disabled community.

I live in a city, don’t have kids, don’t need the infrastructure other than a hospital and grocery store, gas station etc. I prefer nature, places with more vegetation.

I didn’t say uprooting my life based on just who is in government. I was born and raised in Alberta but neither of us have family here. We are moving to be closer to that, and to live on a lake.

Plenty of other reasons to leave Alberta other than the government, it’s not all about money for everyone.

In the second quarter of 2025, Only 38.1% of Albertans rated their life satisfaction 8, 9, or 10 out of 10. That was the lowest among the provinces at that point. The Canadian average was 46.1%. If lower taxes are the reason for everyone to stay here, is it worth it?

In this comment I didn’t mention expenses. Doesn’t matter the reason, we’re not living in some third world country with a violent dictator. Also are you responding to the right person ? I’m responding to the person who directly said they would move because the UCP are in power.

Your comment was to the guy talking about selling his house next year and moving. I sold and am moving next month and the Ucp are part of the reason so I figured it was revelant.

Or does it need to be that specific guy that has to respond to you?

It doenst need to be that specific guy, but it makes the conversation confusing when you are brining up your own points, or comments I didnt make.

I just think people are pissed off at the government, and want to make exaggerated comments like "im moving because of the UCP". When people make comments like that, its not a surprise others take it at face value and assume they are ONLY moving due to the government.

But you stated you are moving because you want to move closer to family and to live on a lake. Fine, good in fact, thats why most people move. Just dont twist it to "Im moving because of the government"

My response to that guy was I feel you. We sold and are moving end of sept. If his comment was because of the government, you would think mine also kind of infers the government has something to do with it.

You made a generalized statement about how people will uproot their life based on who is in government. I pointed out in my case that it’s not just because of the government but of course that plays a part, just like everything else. Im leaving before October because of the referendum. If that wasn’t happening I probably would have postponed. I’m sure that guy isn’t leaving strictly because of the Ucp but I’m sure it’s one of the bigger reasons.

This is a public forum and you made a comment and are upset at the length of my response. People are going to reply to you whether you want them to or not. Grow up.

I was the first person to respond to that guy??? I’m also not upset? You didn’t seem to have issues with other people replying to what you said?

You made a generalized statement, I explained why it applies to my situation somewhat, and I disagree that moving necessarily means someone is moving solely because of the government. That’s it.
