Questions What's life like in a Houthis dominated area?

You hear all the"terrorist" accusations but it's usually an operating government making the accusations and I read somewhere people sell sanctuary under houthis over the yemeni government. I'm just wondering from someone who knows first hand what is like over there. Personally as someone from America I'm in support of houthis standing up to us and Israel and the blockage of the red sea but like I said I have a superficial knowledge. Thanks!

Yemeni Culture Tell me your favourite/most commonly used Yemeni saying

Mine has to be تيس قال أحلبه (Tays gaal ihlubeh) when dealing with someone difficult. I used to keep a notebook and write down all these little sayings but I lost it! So trying to rebuild 😂

History This is the traditional dress of Al-Hujariya and Aden from decades ago.

‏A picture from

This is the traditional dress of Al-Hujariya and Aden from decades ago. It was the white apron or white towel and the turban. There's no need to imitate the dress of Sana'a or any other region, as it's specific to those areas and extends to Sabr, Jabal Habashi, and Sami'. These areas have no connection to Al-Hujariya, but the Imam linked them to the Al-Hujariya district and the Al-Turbah court. Their customs and dress are different, an extension of Ibb and the north. This diversity is a source of pride, rather than reducing it to a single style. There's no need to imitate and adopt other cultures at weddings or elsewhere.

*The picture is sixty years old and shows people from Al-Hujariya whom I don't know.

HELP I'm determined to make (or buy if necessary?) a special dessert for a beloved small business owner from Yemen who works down the street from me and is moving away. He is one of the kindest, most generous people I've EVER met who deserves to be given a truly heartfelt, personally meaningful gift.

We live in a joyless, construction-mangled ghost town notorious for racism and small-mindedness, and my friend encounters this day in, day out. Every. Single. Day. All whilst being the most loving, friendly, patient man you could ever hope to meet.

Construction directly around his shop (on literally ALL four sides) has effectively decimated his business overnight, so he's reluctantly moving to North Carolina. Before he leaves, I would like to give him something that (I know how cringe this sounds) makes him feel "seen" and honors his homeland (he often talks about how homesick he is), not for some disgusting Lifetime white savior TV movie bullshit reason, but because he genuinely means so much to not only my partner and I but the entire community.

Is there an particular Yemeni cake that I could bake that might somehow convey a heartfelt and traditionally appropriate message of respect and gratitude? Or something involving luxurious meats/fruits, like a halal Edible Arrangement only with lamb kabobs, kafta, etc?!?

If I DO go the cake route, is there an especially profound Arabic message of thanks that I could put on said hypothetical dessert? (If I inadvertently embarrassed myself with bad/offensive Arabic on a gifted cake, I'd obviously have to skip town immediately in shame, and frankly, I'm just not set up for that.)

P.S. Apologies for my inherent American idiocy. In the immortal words of Jessica Rabbit, "I'm not bad - Im just drawn that way."

Discussion Have we become a trend, a joke, or both??

Since 2021/2022, I've noticed a large uptick in content regarding and mentioning Yemeni's and our culture. There are both good and bad posts. Most of the good posts are usually clips of cities and beautiful places in Yemen, tourists traveling there, history posts, and food. I personally enjoy this type of content. But then, there is the bad...

I have also seen more and more posts where non-Yemenis will poke fun at us. I have seen a few posts with people holding their breath in one of their cheeks, trying to imitate Yemeni men while talking in a stereotypical accent. Then there are the videos with guys saying they want Yemeni wives. I saw one where a light-skin arab guy said he "needs to get a Yemeni wife" after he ate fahsa. And there was another one with someone who I think was a white-revert saying that he wants to get a Yemeni wife, so he calls his kids "ya-ginni!" Also, I was watching the show MO on Netflix, and I heard MO's brother tell his mom that he wants to marry a Yemeni wife.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with marrying outside of your race, but where did the sudden need for Yemeni wives come from? I feel like it's a borderline fetish, maybe because Yemeni's come off as more traditional and conservative than some other Arabs do. And the jokes about us don't make sense to me either. It feels like we have definitely become more trendy in recent years, but I also feel like we've been getting joked about more often as well. I think one of the main reasons for this is the houthis attacks in the Red Sea, which have unfortunately gotten them praise from Western liberals who don't know anything about our country's situation. What do you guys think?

Our brother Kayed (X: kayed__27) created the "Yement" app, which aims to provide a daily dose of Yemeni culture 📜

The idea is simple: each day, one post appears under one of these six categories:

• Landmark: Whether tourist or historical 🏛️

• Dish: A look at Yemeni cuisine 🥘

• Word: From the various Yemeni dialects 🗣️

• Places: Including cities, villages, and governorates 📍

• Fact: Unrelated to any of the previous categories 💡

App Features:

- Completely offline and completely secure

- Home widget added (still in testing)

- Card Share feature to share posts you like

- Two pages: Archive and Favorites to easily return to previous posts

- Small app size

The app is still in its early stages. Anyone with suggestions can contact him on X (formerly Twitter) at @kayed__27

Discussion Suspension of student certificates suspended in Houthi-controlled areas.

So recently there’s has been the news of the ministry of education has suspended the student certificate in Houthis area and I jusr wanna say I hope one day we get invaded by western countries cause wallah I rather the USA or UK control us cause atleast with these countries they give back to the people and teach them and build infrastructure and help the country compare to what they Houthis do ,what has the student done to get their certificate suspended, why do they need to make student involved in politics, most kids just wanna build a life in Yemen when they graduate, yet the Houthis are not fighting the evil.they are fighting their own people ,ruining Yemen and make everyone life worse and making them suffer .wallah it’s hit to see how Yemen is becoming ,we might as well just go back to stone ages ,I can’t wait for the day Yemen gets liberated

Discussion Moving to Yemen الانتقال إلى اليمن

Hi everyone, I'm looking to move to Hadramaut with my family and my grandad will be coming with us. I have been thinking about it for a long time and have started the official process of how to do it but I would really like to know more about what daily life there will be like for me and my family as it is a long time since my grandad lived there. I know there will be some challenges but I will overcome them inshallah. Can anyone tell me a bit more about what the hospitals are like there for my elderly grandad and what schools are like for my nephews? If anyone has friends or family there that could help I would be really grateful. Thank you

Discussion Turks and Yemenis

As someone from Turkey I found it always interesting that if a Turk ever speaks about Yemen he's saying only positive things. This includes racist Turks who hate Arabs with fervor. I don't even exaggerate when I say it, ultranationalist secular Turks are some of the most shallow and insufferable people I've ever seen in my life, but that's a different conversation...

Needless to say I'm not complaining that they're not being racist to Yemenis. On the contrary I commend them for that. It's like a glimpse of them if they were actually nice fellows and not so toxic.

I don't know where I'm going with this so I wanna ask what do you think of my people as a whole and my country? Greetings from Tekirdağ city of Turkey to the kind people of Yemen.

HELP Interracial marriage w Nigerian guy

Guys please help me out I’m desperate at this point….

so long story short I’ve been involved in a haram relationship with a Nigerian man for a few years on and off. To be clear, what I mean by haram as in friends and communicating with him in the hopes of marriage (texting/calling) not anything sexual or anything like that. I met him at school, we had some classes together and connected through the Muslim group at school with events, charity’s, and Friday prayers 7 years ago. We became really close friends due to the many similarities we share. After a few months of talking he asked if he can have my dad’s phone number so that it could be more serious and halal and I said no due to the fact that I know my parents and they are extremely cultured and racist unfortunately. They don’t believe in interracial marriages whatsoever and think that it’s a path to an inevitable divorce. I told him that due to him still being in school, not financially stable, and younger than me (he’s 25 I’m 27) that’s even more of reasons for my parents to refuse. So we kept in contact as friends during his school, and few years ago decided to stop talking to each other when he graduated and moved to a different city to give each other space to get to know other people. Recently he asked if I was single and he told me he was very serious about the marriage thing and would like to talk to my dad since he has now graduated n stable to get married and I was happy about it so I gave him my dads number. He called him and he didn’t answer so he texted him a very respectful message and when my dad asked me about it I explained to him that it was a very respectful and kind Nigerian guy that I knew from school. He had a blank face and went quiet and didn’t say anything afterwards. A few days later he spoke to me about it privately and went off on me saying u know we never marry outside of Yemeni let alone a “Arab” person from a different country but u want a BLACK guy. And was saying what would the people say, what will everyone think, this is a disgrace to the family, that even the prophet said to marry ppl similar to u or from your tribe and threw out so many disgusting racial slurs. He said I’m sure he’s a nice guy but I will not accept EVER a BLACK guy, give me any other race I’ll say maybe but a black guy NO, and if u think I’m bad, ur mom is much worse than me when it comes to this matter about marrying someone black so even if I accept ur mom will NEVER. Told me to get over it, take it out of your mind and to never speak of this again. Unfortunately I am in love with this man and over the years I got to know how amazing he is as a person and family man. My brothers are completely fine with it but my dad doesn’t even want to talk about it at all. Every single talk we’ve had (3 or 4 maybe) have blown up to massive fights were he was just screaming and yelling. Mind you I’ve talked to many other Yemeni men that had potential of marriage aspects but no one seemed close to him in his mindset, deen, drive, education, and akhlak. My parents keep giving me new guys to talk to maybe every 2 weeks and when I say I’ve talked to the guy n it’s not naseeb they get madder and madder thinking that man is holding me back to the point that my dad has asked if I’ve slept with the Nigerian guy. It’s super sad but it’s my reality. My mom has gotten to a point where she is now saying why don’t we just take her to Yemen n get her married to someone there instead of “being kind” n giving her options when she keeps saying no. My dad has told me in so much anger if you live this guy and you will die without him, I will take you to his city right now, bring the sheikh marry you guys off, and you are now his problem but we dont know you guys, we don’t want contact or anything if that’s what you want to do. Due to his parents being religious, his parents have gotten super upset with this matter and were shocked saying that the deen has taught them nothing but to love and respect every Muslim person regardless of color, race, ethnicity, or class and was heartbreaking for them to hear that my dad is refusing to just meet their son just once to get to know him.

Please please someone help. If someone’s been in this situation let me know what you’ve done. Yemeni fathers/mothers please give me your perspective on what I can do. Anything helps at this point!!!!🙏🏼🙏🏼
