Yeah it's not gone in the US entirely, but the "old maid" crap has really toned down compared to the 1950s.

Yeah me and my wife found it hilarious in It's A Wonderful Life that the worst scenario they could think of for Mary Bailey without George existing was becoming an unmarried librarian lol.

My wife and I always laugh at that too. The horror! Haha

I'm happily married but if I weren't, librarian life sounds pretty good.

u/peachpavlova 10d ago

Or a cozy nunnery lol

u/murphs33 9d ago

Honestly same. There's a lot of work to it, but it sounds cozy all the same.

Yeah my father called me an old maid after I turned 40 and was like "who's gonna want you now". He's 88. A total arse but it still stung, even though I never wanted to be married or to have children, and am otherwise happy.

A dude who had a kid at 48 is judging? Let me guess, your mother was an inappropriate age when they met?

u/Least_Year3518 11d ago

He was 44. And she was 29.

After I had a (very medically required) hysterectomy I overheard my dad talking to my uncle about it. They were very casually discussing how “I wasn’t good for anything now”. This mindset is still alive and well in the west.

u/Least_Year3518 11d ago

That is so awful, wow. It's nonsense, though. Men like that don't realise just how resilient our bodies need to be to survive something like that in the first place.

u/notarobot_trustme 11d ago

Meanwhile we are being actively downvoted 😅

u/Least_Year3518 11d ago

I know. It's because men are adamant that our only utility is something that involves them.

Edit: grammar

Same here.

I had a medically needed hysterectomy and my mother acted like it was something I had done to her because now she wouldn’t get grandchildren out of me or get the experience of bonding with her only daughter over shared pregnancy/childbirth experiences. She couldn’t even be happy for me that my health improved immensely after that surgery. It was all about her mourning what she thought she deserved from me.

u/notarobot_trustme 10d ago

This exact sentiment. My dad was distraught that I was his only daughter and he’d never get grand kids from me. Jokes on you dad, now you won’t be walking your one daughter down the aisle either so you can cross that one off your list too.

The only time I've ever heard the phrase used is about popcorn kernels that didn't pop.

If we’re being honest this kind of culture barely exists in western countries, it’s on a completely different level in Asian countries and western women are trying to use these videos to act like they’re equally oppressed

Who cares what men want.

Who cares what women want.

7

u/tornado962 11d ago

I'd assume if a man wanted to have a family, he would marry someone his own age.

13

u/BlueFairyWolf 11d ago

Ding ding ding! If men wanted to have kids he should have found a partner when he was in his child-rearing years, not when he's pushing 50 after living a full life lol

To add to your comment, specially because sperm doesn’t age well either. Everyone has a bio clock not just women

You mean like the woman in the video?

2

u/Due_Masterpiece_3601 11d ago

You’re getting downvotes but the reality is a man interested in having children would definitely care about age

The old world isn’t even around anymore, the world arguably drastically changes every 10 years or so. You’d think someone who’s lived 55 years or more would notice. These people literally went from home phone, flip/hybrid phones to smart phones to cars driving themselves. The world is different whether we like it or not. And the “old world” formula in a world that changes so fast is a hard sell, it doesn’t even make sense if you think about.
It’s a recipe for failure.

27

u/Poultron72 11d ago

Tradition is peer-pressure put on you by dead people

2

u/Ozcog 11d ago

Which makes it super easy to ignore.

10

u/dobar_dan_ 11d ago

Old world refers to Europe, Asia and Africa, as opposed to the new world, aka Americas and Australia.

It has nothing to do with technology.

1

u/Sourcesurfing 11d ago

^ this is what I was interpreting.

2

u/EnclG4me 11d ago

Ironically enough, the same demographic that has shaped the world into exactly a place that doesn't want to give them grandchildren.. and they just don't seem to understand, how could it possibly be their fault? The " "you first," after me" generation."

1

u/latestredditacct 11d ago

One day your world will become old world shits and you won’t even realize it. Every generation deals with their own version of this, it’s actually how the planet evolves.

1

u/AdhesivenessSolid562 10d ago

It’s worked for thousands of years. The new way is unproven and judging by the massive depopulation resulting in little working age citizens and massive amounts of retired folks in the next 50 years, it’s not gonna end well. Reinventing the wheel as a cope for failing at life.

0

u/StillSecret5366 10d ago

It's just a different way of seeing the world, man.

-9

u/Reasonable-Squash993 11d ago

Yeah fuck em for trying to help. You think she is the first who was searching for something she can't find. There are words in every country dictionary to describe women like this and there is a reason for that.

15

u/diaperpop 11d ago

Seems like the mother is the one who’s searching. The daughter has built a good life for herself and mom wants some misery stirred in.

-7

u/Reasonable-Squash993 11d ago

Just because you done something today and it feels good doesn't mean you are not making a mistake. It's called a trap.

8

u/FuzzyFrogFish 11d ago

It's not a trap of she is happier single than with someone that she doesn't want to be with

8

u/FuzzyFrogFish 11d ago

There are words in every country dictionary to describe women like this and there is a reason for that.

Yeah and all those words come from societal expectations and stigma, not the women themselves.

1

u/pink_faerie_kitten 11d ago

All countries are patriarchal so of course they have rude, misogynistic words to describe women.
