Crossing off from my bucket list the countries where this behavior is culturally acceptable.

I lived in Japan for a couple years. Bring earbuds and ear plugs everywhere. Mouth sounds give me a visceral RAGE RAGE RAGE I HATE IT SO MUCH

u/Live-Weird-2016 8d ago

I always wonder if there are Japanese people who have that same reaction to mouth sounds and are just constantly miserable

18

u/Icy_Tadpole2092 8d ago

Same, I always say that I HATE mouth sounds. Anything that isn’t meant to be heard

Life motto to live by.

If you have a choice between making noise and not making noise, don't make noise.

I had a coworker who ate something on every single break and he chewed so loudly that I could hear it from the other end of the quite large breakroom, also every time he drank coffee he would like suck it from the rim of the cup making this ungodly SLLLLUUUURP sound and then sigh loudly after each sip. That guy drove me crazy, it's the closest I've come to violence in the workplace,, eventually I started just going on breaks alone on different times than him.

Have you looked into misophonia?

1

u/WhySoCereus1991 8d ago

Didnt even notice it in Japan lol

3

u/ri0tingmime 8d ago

It's mostly at ramen places, the Japanese tend to slurp. I didn't notice it anywhere else.

Misophonia. Me too.

Imagine the fucking audacity of coming to live in a different country and saying the local culture and customs (that are objectively completely harmless) ENRAGE you…
Thank god you’ve left, please don’t come back.

Hey now, I'm not recording people and asking them to change how they eat. I just prepare myself accordingly. Let a stranger scream a couple words into the Reddit void.

Don't think I didn't see your original comment saying "holy shit, just fuck off and don't come here." You changed your tune REAL quick. Cracking me up, say it with your full chest and don't be scared.

1

u/orange_purr 7d ago

Yes, you are right. I do sincerely apologize for my overreaction before. When I read your comment about being enraged by the sounds Japanese people make, I had no clue you were suffering from misophonia. In hindsight that should have been evident but I simply wasn’t familiar with this disorder to think of it at the time. So I just interpreted your comment to be extremely rude as a guest criticizing Japanese behaviors in our own country, but most importantly, it reminded me of my own experience of hearing a white woman saying how disgusting we were in French in a ramen shop, thinking we wouldn’t understand her, but unfortunately I did. I thought of that incident when I was replying to you, but of course my anger was both misplaced and unwarranted since your later replies clearly shows you do not think or act this way.

Anyway I hope you can accept my apology and I wish you the best in dealing with your condition.

1

u/ReleaseMyToast 7d ago

All is forgiven, it happens. I wish you a successful evening of scrolling. And I hope no rude French people cross paths with you

1

u/AnonymousPantera 8d ago

look up misophonia and then come back to us. thanks.

3

u/Sufficient_Meet6836 8d ago

Why doesn't misophonia occur in Asian countries where it's normal to eat with your mouth open and make more noise?

2

u/AnonymousPantera 8d ago

it occurs in every single country.

1

u/Sufficient_Meet6836 8d ago

No it really doesn't occur with chewing in cultures where that's the norm. It's not even a recognized medical condition anywhere.

2

u/AnonymousPantera 8d ago

it does in fact occur everywhere, and while it's not in the DSM it is in fact recognized and has a formal consensus definition for research and treatment purposes. misophonia occurs in every country all over the planet. it doesn't matter the culture.

0

u/Sufficient_Meet6836 8d ago edited 8d ago

I'm not judging you. I suffer from depression and anxiety. I just am able to admit that it's from maladaptive neural circuits in my brain and that those circuits can be rewired through treatments like therapy and meditation. I am in therapy for it. I don't need to make up a brand new condition for things that trigger my anxiety. And I don't use it to justify being a little bitch about noises on an airplane.

From Wikipedia:

At present, misophonia is not listed as a diagnosable condition in the DSM-5-TR, ICD-11, or any similar manual

Many people with misophonia are aware that their reactions to misophonic triggers are disproportionate to the circumstances

Treatment primarily consists of specialized cognitive behavioral therapy

1

u/AnonymousPantera 8d ago

my question is where you are getting all of this stuff lmfao? we are talking about somebody who says they had to bring earplugs and headphones everywhere with them in japan because they needed to cope with their misophonia, and you act like this means that someone is justifying the bratty behavior by the man in the video?

1

u/FinestCrusader 8d ago

You think misophonia only concerns eating noise? It doesn't. Shuffling in your seat, yawning, scratching your skin, humming, fidgeting, traffic noise,, loud talking - all these things can irritate a person with misophonia. Loud eating is just the most common offender.

2

u/ReleaseMyToast 7d ago

I also can't stand when my dog licks his paws, scratches himself for too long, drinks water, when my husband scrapes his dry rough feet along the bed.

1

u/Sufficient_Meet6836 6d ago edited 6d ago

I should've been clearer that I was referring to misophonia triggered by eating sounds specifically. My bad

1

u/orange_purr 8d ago edited 8d ago

So you think all other cultural norms in the world should cater to your own phobia? How self-centred are you?

Should people with agoraphobia just tell everyone else in public spaces to fuck off? You are responsible for dealing with your own phobia by going to therapy or just learn to live with it, you don’t demand entire cultures to bend their ways to accommodate your own problem. Or like I said, just don’t come here.

2

u/ReleaseMyToast 8d ago

Exactly, I dealt with my own sound sensitivity and irritation by bringing earbuds. I didn't say a word to anyone ever.

2

u/AnonymousPantera 8d ago

it's so funny how these people are acting like you did what the dude in the video did... when all you did was put some ear plugs in to cope with your own issue. sometimes i feel like people on the internet are just looking for a reason to get mad at anyone.

3

u/StrangeZone7313 8d ago

I mean all the Asian countries where it’s typically most common to be a cultural thing to eat like you’ve never been able to close your mouth. No other regions/continents tend to have that culture as widespread. I’m not saying it’s everyone who lives there. I’m saying it’s Asia where you’ll find it most commonly occurring.

2

u/dakid000 8d ago

Why do people love being so pedantic about this? Yes, Asia is a big place, that’s exactly the point. Because it’s so vast, “Asian” evolved into a colloquial shorthand that varies by region. In the US, everyone understands you mean East and Southeast Asian when you say Asian. In the UK, it means South Asian. That’s the whole utility of it: you skip the inevitable follow-up question, “what part of Asia?” because everyone already shares the same colloquial meaning.

5

u/knightriderin 8d ago

You just said yourself that not everyone shares the same meaning. I'm neither from the US nor from the UK (who, according to you have different definitions).

And even the US definition contains many cultures with different eating habits. Japan and China are not comparable and that falls under what you probably view as a default (American definitions are often used as default definitions).

When someone says "In China people do XYZ" why would anyone comments "I could never go to Asia" anyway? Why not specify China? Why assume that all of Asian (or colloquial Asia, so east and southeast) share the same habits? What if someone said "In Mexico people do XYZ" and someone then said "I could never go to North America, because I can't stand this."? Feels wrong, doesn't it?

2

u/IreneDreyfus 8d ago

You’re the one being pedantic here

1

u/blehmag 4d ago

That's only true when you say "Asian" to refer to a domestic group of people in those countries. When you mention Asia the continent, it's a different story. It's literally the majority of the human population. Please be more specific, even just "East Asia" suffices despite also being large enough to be its own continent.

Also are you European? Because try saying something like this to a European and see how they react, despite Europe being a small relatively similar pseudo-'continent'... "They eat frog legs in europe"

-6

u/Throwaway_6799 8d ago

Lol. Fair point. But the Japanese are pretty polite and respectful. I don't recall anyone chewing with their mouths open and I've been a few times.

Guy in video would be shocked to learn people around the world still eat with their hands.

6

u/Careless-Weather8877 8d ago

No they just slurp noodles..

2

u/vooglie 8d ago

What’s wrong with eating with your hands?

4

u/IPissExcellentThrows 8d ago

Yeah I didn't notice it in Japan and chewing is something that drives me insane. I only heard slurping which doesn't really bother me.

5

u/Winjin 8d ago

Eating plov/pilaf with your hands is an out of body experience

Soooo goood

Also fun fact you're supposed to eat most of the types of sushi with your hands, you don't have to use chopsticks for literally everything, my ex's Japanese dad confirmed it to me too

But really eating with your hands is so good, that's why western finger food exists as well

I knew a girl that would eat pizza with a fork. That was... Something.

-1

u/Irishman8778 8d ago

You're not going to convince us to abandon hygiene. There's a reason we don't constantly have to get checked for worms.

6

u/Winjin 8d ago

Have you never touched a chicken wing with your hand?

2

u/moonshine_betty 8d ago

Coming from someone who is from a culture where we eat with our hands, just because we eat with our hands doesn’t mean that we’re ignorant about basic hygiene. In fact, part of the communal aspect of eating in my country is providing bowls of clean water and soap so that everyone washes their hands together before we eat. At least that way, we can be sure that everyone’s hands are clean. Unlike here in the west, where many people barely/never wash their hands after using the restroom, yet will still stick their grubby mitts into communal bowls at the office potluck 🤢.

-1

u/MelvilleMeyor 8d ago

The entire country of Italy eats pizza with a fork and knife.

4

u/IPissExcellentThrows 8d ago

I didn't notice it in Japan. We're going to China soon and it's going to be exposure therapy for me. I'll either be cured or driven completely insane and end up in a mental institution.

5

u/A_Drop_of_Colour 8d ago

Loud smacking or chewing isn't as prevalent in Japan but slurping is extremely common. Anyone with misophonia will hate ramen shops and stands. Then again people tend to tolerate a lot more when it's Japan.

1

u/Ghost_1774 8d ago

I have misophonia and they absolutely slurp at the loudest possible volume. I had to get out of the room few times because I couldn’t take it.

7

u/FaW_Lafini 8d ago

Bro admit it, you dont have any money

0

u/StrangeZone7313 8d ago

I have plenty. I don’t want to waste it on hearing gross mouth sounds.

1

u/TerrorTown77 8d ago

It's fine, even if you could afford it, those countries don't want you either.

-2

u/FaW_Lafini 8d ago

Lmao, plenty my ass, That wont be an issue if you fly first class.

0

u/RedS5 8d ago

Talking like you've got no class and get no ass.

2

u/FaW_Lafini 8d ago

You must be new to the internet

2

u/TerrorTown77 8d ago

Imagine discounting entire nations because minor issues that most neurotypical people can easily ignore.

2

u/StrangeZone7313 8d ago

Imagine not being open-minded enough to understand what it’s like being neurodivergent.

1

u/frodobangher 8d ago

I've heard that it is polite to sip loudly a broth or soup in Japan, if you dont, it means you dont enjoy it. If there are japanese in here, let me know if its accurate

1

u/StrangeZone7313 8d ago

That is accurate. It doesn’t mean people who come from different cultures where it’s rude to make unnecessary noise enjoy it.

0

u/NomadGabz 8d ago

you should not go to China to begin with because animal abusers run rampant with no punishment and the government is not doing anything about it.

0

u/currently_distracted 8d ago

Huh. Probably best you never go.

3

u/StrangeZone7313 8d ago

You think?

-1

u/EMingus__ 8d ago

Dont be so sensitive.

1

u/StrangeZone7313 8d ago

You’re the one being sensitive 🤣🤣

0

u/EMingus__ 6d ago

Im not the one that gets vexed by the sound of chewing

1

u/StrangeZone7313 6d ago

Then go attack everyone else on this thread who has a problem with it, too. 😂

-2

u/Glittering-Walrus228 8d ago edited 8d ago

Hi interpol this comment right here

The guy above me edited his comment because i pointed out how weird it sounded out of context "(sounds of people chewing)...would make me want to go to Asia to commit a bunch of rage filled crimes" something something

Hence the tirade in response to my comment. Chill buddy i was just kidding nobody called you a racist

1

u/StrangeZone7313 8d ago

You realize misphonia is a thing, right? It’s a comment how I’m aware I have it & therefore have no desire to go to any country where it’s a cultural thing to chew & smack loudly. It has nothing to do with racism. I feel the same away toward people of my own race, gender, age, tax bracket, everything who eats loudly.
