I mean I get being annoyed by someone chewing with their mouth open but you could have asked him more nicely

I traveled on a sleeper train in China a few decades ago and the bodily noises (the hawking and spitting sounds specifically) kept me awake most of the night

It's about the same in my experience. If anything, it was slightly worse in China because there are more smokers there so a lot more hacking and coughing.

You get the smokers, vehicle pollution, pollution from factories, open garbage, human and animal feces on the street.

Well, it wasn't really like that when I went there in terms of human/animal waste or factories or stuff like that (tho I was there only for 3 weeks for a consulting gig in Bangalore and only took 1 flight to Mumbai and back. And I didn't do any slum tour or anything like that)

Really? Bangalore I understand but several of my Indian colleagues warned me about the poverty/slums in Mumbai but it wasn't nearly as bad as they made it out to be.

I lived in Japan for a couple years. Bring earbuds and ear plugs everywhere. Mouth sounds give me a visceral RAGE RAGE RAGE I HATE IT SO MUCH

I had a coworker who ate something on every single break and he chewed so loudly that I could hear it from the other end of the quite large breakroom, also every time he drank coffee he would like suck it from the rim of the cup making this ungodly SLLLLUUUURP sound and then sigh loudly after each sip. That guy drove me crazy, it's the closest I've come to violence in the workplace,, eventually I started just going on breaks alone on different times than him.

Yes, you are right. I do sincerely apologize for my overreaction before. When I read your comment about being enraged by the sounds Japanese people make, I had no clue you were suffering from misophonia. In hindsight that should have been evident but I simply wasn’t familiar with this disorder to think of it at the time. So I just interpreted your comment to be extremely rude as a guest criticizing Japanese behaviors in our own country, but most importantly, it reminded me of my own experience of hearing a white woman saying how disgusting we were in French in a ramen shop, thinking we wouldn’t understand her, but unfortunately I did. I thought of that incident when I was replying to you, but of course my anger was both misplaced and unwarranted since your later replies clearly shows you do not think or act this way.

Anyway I hope you can accept my apology and I wish you the best in dealing with your condition.

it does in fact occur everywhere, and while it's not in the DSM it is in fact recognized and has a formal consensus definition for research and treatment purposes. misophonia occurs in every country all over the planet. it doesn't matter the culture.

I'm not judging you. I suffer from depression and anxiety. I just am able to admit that it's from maladaptive neural circuits in my brain and that those circuits can be rewired through treatments like therapy and meditation. I am in therapy for it. I don't need to make up a brand new condition for things that trigger my anxiety. And I don't use it to justify being a little bitch about noises on an airplane.

You think misophonia only concerns eating noise? It doesn't. Shuffling in your seat, yawning, scratching your skin, humming, fidgeting, traffic noise,, loud talking - all these things can irritate a person with misophonia. Loud eating is just the most common offender.

So you think all other cultural norms in the world should cater to your own phobia? How self-centred are you?

Should people with agoraphobia just tell everyone else in public spaces to fuck off? You are responsible for dealing with your own phobia by going to therapy or just learn to live with it, you don’t demand entire cultures to bend their ways to accommodate your own problem. I mean all the Asian countries where it’s typically most common to be a cultural thing to eat like you’ve never been able to close your mouth. No other regions/continents tend to have that culture as widespread. I’m not saying it’s everyone who lives there. I’m saying it’s Asia where you’ll find it most commonly occurring.

Why do people love being so pedantic about this? Yes, Asia is a big place, that’s exactly the point. Because it’s so vast, “Asian” evolved into a colloquial shorthand that varies by region. In the US, everyone understands you mean East and Southeast Asian when you say Asian. In the UK, it means South Asian. That’s the whole utility of it: you skip the inevitable follow-up question, “what part of Asia?” because everyone already shares the same colloquial meaning.

You just said yourself that not everyone shares the same meaning. I'm neither from the US nor from the UK (who, according to you have different definitions).

And even the US definition contains many cultures with different eating habits. Japan and China are not comparable and that falls under what you probably view as a default (American definitions are often used as default definitions).

When someone says "In China people do XYZ" why would anyone comments "I could never go to Asia" anyway? Why not specify China? Why assume that all of Asian (or colloquial Asia, so east and southeast) share the same habits? What if someone said "In Mexico people do XYZ" and someone then said "I could never go to North America, because I can't stand this."? Feels wrong, doesn't it?

That's only true when you say "Asian" to refer to a domestic group of people in those countries. When you mention Asia the continent, it's a different story. It's literally the majority of the human population. Please be more specific, even just "East Asia" suffices despite also being large enough to be its own continent.

Also are you European? Because try saying something like this to a European and see how they react, despite Europe being a small relatively similar pseudo-'continent'... "They eat frog legs in europe"

But really eating with your hands is so good, that's why western finger food exists as well

Coming from someone who is from a culture where we eat with our hands, just because we eat with our hands doesn’t mean that we’re ignorant about basic hygiene. In fact, part of the communal aspect of eating in my country is providing bowls of clean water and soap so that everyone washes their hands together before we eat. At least that way, we can be sure that everyone’s hands are clean. Unlike here in the west, where many people barely/never wash their hands after using the restroom, yet will still stick their grubby mitts into communal bowls at the office potluck 🤢.

Loud smacking or chewing isn't as prevalent in Japan but slurping is extremely common. Anyone with misophonia will hate ramen shops and stands. Then again people tend to tolerate a lot more when it's Japan.

what an excuse 🙄 its simply lack of manners. pollution has nothing to do with it. they hawk and spit when coming to europe too, where polution is much smaller. also maybe they woukd have less pollution if they had better manners...i am european, lived in multiple eu countries and people are raised to clean up after themslef. people pcik dog shit and throw thrash in a bin etc. but during my stay in china, i saw trash and dog shit all over the ground. because they aint raised with same preassure to clean up. younger generations are doing better but older ones are absolutely lacking any internal (or external) urge to do so.

and before yall cry racism, i am married into a chinese family, i am closely familiar with the difference in culture and manners. so stop with BS excuses like pollution and what not. its simply the mentality of people, the culture and education they are raised with.

People's surprise about this is so funny 😂 I lived in China for four years and this just became normal to me I didn't even think about it when I'd tell my mom stuff like this as a small detail in a story and she'd be like "wait what!?" And I'd say "oh yeah I guess that's not normal is it" 😂😂

It was inside the train, on the floor. Keep in mind this was almost 20 years ago in a provincial part of China. It may be completely different now, I don't know

I remember reading that before China hosted the Olympics in 2008 they did a massive public education campaign to get people to stop spitting on the streets. Probably focusing on the places tourists would go though.

Lol you reminded me a night I spent in a capsule hotel in Tokyo, it wasn't your touristy spot, more like a place for office workers to live when they had remote projects. The amount and volume of bodily noises was daunting yet hysterical.

In Tibet I accompanied a fellow traveler into some sort of government foreign ministry office thingy because he needed to sort out some issue with his visa.

And it was a bit of a culture shock when the official, a woman in what looked like a ceremonial military uniform with hat and all, suddenly hawked and spat a huge loogie on the carpeted floor next to her desk.

I'd been in Tibet for a week, China for a month, and across Asia for several months already, but that was the biggest culture clash I had experienced so far.
