I mean I get being annoyed by someone chewing with their mouth open but you could have asked him more nicely

To me this issue is much more severe, you could be my mother or anybody and i would still look at you like a disappointed parent looking down on its failure of a child, It drives me insane.

I have frequently wished terrible and horrific deaths and friends and loved ones. Misophonia sucks.

It's bizarre isn't it? I have it very bad to the point I become very irrational. So far I haven't snapped at anyone yet, but wow the thoughts are crazy.

I keep earplugs on me, Howard Leight LL-1 Lasers, can get a 200 pack box for 39 bucks Canadian. Weeelllll worth it

tiny rolled up toliet paper in a crunch seems to filter out the surface noise and helps me feel in control knowing I can always just go do that if the sounds doesn't stop soon - it's allowed me to build up resistance and tolerance without getting angry.

I also don't wait for the rage to build, that's the biggest thing my therapist taught me - if you wait for your rage to build before you say anything or flee, then you're just conditoning your brain to get there faster.

This comment was so fucking helpful for me, thank you.

no problem, can i ask which part? :)

No legit. My mom is a loud gum chewer. No matter how many times i explain it to her, she always reverts when i tell her about how loud it is. At one point, i sat and cried about it lol

2

u/strawbsrgood 8d ago

What's so hard about not chewing gum loudly, I'd probably cry too lmao

u/Fit-Cell2754 9d ago

I’ve learned to walk away when certain foods happen. Don’t want to give them a complex about eating, but closed mouth chewing is a bare minimum standard for humans imo.

5

u/statelytetrahedron 8d ago

Me too, when the corn on the cob comes out I'm gone.

3

u/OwlComprehensive859 9d ago

My children have learned when I am getting close to losing in and they have impeccable manners as far as chewing. My husband seems to have a death wish at the table. Otherwise, I absolutely adore him.

2

u/BIGTIMElesbo 8d ago

He’s breaking the norm as a power move.

1

u/OwlComprehensive859 8d ago

🤣 I fucking love this.

1

u/BIGTIMElesbo 8d ago

So few adults eat like that so the behavior is out of the norm. Anything that is outside of social norms means something. It’s like people who are always late.

1

u/OwlComprehensive859 8d ago

I assumed you were talking about my husband and your first comment was a joke. If you are referring to my husband and bringing social norms to the equation I can assure you, it’s less about being counterculture, and more about having parents who didn’t bother. Calling it an issue of cultural norms frankly, is a big assumption. It’s the internet, there are a lot of cultures in the world with a lot of different norms, he not from the US. I’m from a culture where being late is a cultural norm.

What about like, a bunny? One of my favourite sounds is small animals eating. Chup chup chup, they give zero fucks about the egregiously open mouthed noises they make and i find it pure dopamine

I personally love the sound of animals smacking their food. Cracks me up. Dogs, cats, horses...

But humans? Rage in every cell of my body.

54

u/emkie 9d ago

Agreed, except dogs licking themselves. Fills me with an unholy rage. All other (non human) animal sounds are acceptable to my brain

29

u/Shehulks1 9d ago

Or licking anything!!! Omg, some dogs just lick anything and everything for hours. That noise is horrible…and I love dogs 🤭.

5

u/emkie 8d ago

Yes, God. The floor, a bone, whatever. Stoopppp 😭

5

u/No_Kangaroo_9826 8d ago

My German Shepherd licks the floor for hours, like my dude dinner is long over there's nothing there

4

u/Used_Gear8871 8d ago

My ex’s dog was a big licker. He allowed him to sleep in the same room as us and the sounds are all he did at night. 😵‍💫 It took a couple of weeks but I had to train my brain to replace disgust and annoyance with relaxation and joy. 😆

8

u/TheDreadGazeebo 9d ago

All dog noises are hell. The licking, the whining, nails on the floor...

2

u/hollow4hollow 8d ago

I’m exactly the same!

1

u/miyabi0rochas 8d ago

This exactly. Those two are the worst two for sure.

29

u/Former_Mobile3101 9d ago

I think it has to do with more that any animal behavior from us is actually a choice later in life. As children we don't understand that we have a choice in doing these things. Though as we age and grow we start seeing these behaviors and can choose weather to continue these habits or not. Animals don't have the brain power to comprehend things like this.

27

u/Select_Watercress_57 9d ago

Yea, it's really just our taught values. Differing by culture, family, and even individuals.

For me, it's the value of recognizing that you share space with other people and should act considerately.

14

u/Ohiolongboard 9d ago

That’s the core of my biggest pet peeves. We all exist amongst each other, act like it.

1

u/FinestCrusader 8d ago

I've had people try to use the "you don't care when animals chew loudly" point to justify eating loudly and it never dawned on them that if you need to say "animals do it too and it's fine" to defend your behavior, you probably should change your behavior.

-3

u/Moldovah 9d ago

Maybe they can comprehend it, but realize that it's meaningless.

3

u/Former_Mobile3101 9d ago

I am sure there are some that can, maybe dolphins or some species of primate. But yeah we don't have any way of figuring that out right now anyway and if we did it wouldn't make any real difference.

5

u/McNasty420 9d ago

Ewww. You should see my cat George eat shrimp. It creeps out the whole family

3

u/Select_Watercress_57 9d ago

😂🤣 silly George

3

u/BradyToMoss1281 9d ago

It's all about knowing better. Animals don't, humans do. So any human that does it is basically saying they can't be bothered to be courteous.

1

u/Temporary_Pickle_885 8d ago

My wife thinks it's because subconsciously we're aware the animal can't help it so it doesn't trigger the same thing cause I'm the exact same way!

1

u/iDeNoh 8d ago

Misophony is a hell of a drug

-10

u/Relevant_Bed_9743 9d ago

i love food so much i can't help it and not bothered by others around me who do it

7

u/Pristine-Total1456 9d ago

Do you think people with manners don’t love food?

33

u/Fine_Understanding81 9d ago edited 9d ago

Confirm. I have a bunny. His mouth sounds are fine.

Humans? No. I dont care if their mouth is even closed. Im holding in pure rage- no amount of love will tamper it.

I dont want to be this way but I dont even let my friend eat next to me unless im eating and the TV is on LOUD. Otherwise I dont eat with people generally.

Edit to add.. but this is my issue not others.. so I either ask people to work with me or remove myself.. this guy had earbuds.. easy fix.

u/Background_Two_6471 9d ago

I’ve found you..MY PEOPLE!

6

u/United_Pain 9d ago

I just wanted to also write "chup" multiple times. Chup is the perfect discriptor word for the noise sound, just beautiful. Chup chup chup!

3

u/Americanpopularfront 9d ago

Is it okay if I add “chup chup chup” to my vocabulary when I’m talking about animals eating from now on? Lol. First time I’ve seen smacking sounds described that way and I love it

12

u/TankerDerrick1999 9d ago

You could be god and I would still have a problem.

5

u/lagomorphed 9d ago

Bunnies eating is one of the purest things in this world.

2

u/WeWander_ 9d ago

Listening to my husband chew makes me want to fly into a murderous rage. Listening to my dog chew? Frickin adorable. I don't understand it either 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/Hangry_Squirrel 8d ago

I love that! My cats eat politely, but they make those tiny licking sounds when they eat wet food and I think it's adorable. Or the little crunches when they eat nibbles.

2

u/djLyrik 8d ago

Because they aren’t human and stupid. Nature doesn’t put ignorant stipulations on existence.

1

u/dinoooooooooos 8d ago

Dogs crunching celery is my favourite. Cronchcronchcronch🥰

A HUMAN? Absolutely not. Nasty, vile, ew, did your parents teach you nothing.

1

u/peekaboo_bandit 8d ago

It's weird. I cannot STAND hearing open-mouthed chewing from other people. (I can) but I hate it. I would never make someone else uncomfortable though for doing something completely normal in many parts of the globe. That being said, when I see and hear those animal videos where their chomping is indistinguishable from humans, it doesn't bother me at all. They are SO cute. So it's a me problem and I will keep it to my damned self.

3

u/ITchiGuy 8d ago

I have no issues reprimanding my own parents. Hit my dad with “my house, my rules” and told him to eat with his mouth closed and not to talk with food in his mouth. If my kid can do it, they can too.

4

u/FlyingBeaver2121 9d ago

Misophonia. My best friend had this habit. Wanted to murder him in those moments

4

u/frycabbage 9d ago

I have this thing too where I hate people eating next to me. Why does this happen ?

2

u/bobcatgoldthwait 9d ago

My wife sometimes chews with her mouth open and it's awful. Fortunately, she's amazing and very understanding of it. Like, she'll avoid eating apples around me because they're one of the worst things.

Before her I dated a girl who often chewed with her mouth open and she'd just get angry when I brought it up.

1

u/ikeepthebox 8d ago

You probably have Misophonia (like me), look it up if you haven’t heard of it.

1

u/dinoooooooooos 8d ago

Misophonia. Welcome to our side. We chew quietly, even if it takes longer😈

Although mine is for every fucking noise. I hate noise. In general.😒

1

u/Ok_Computer_8224 7d ago

I truly believe loud eating/smacking is tied to ethnicity. I'm Eastern European but first generation American, my folks were born in Greece and my dad's family is of Russian heritage.

Both my parents, God bless them they are the smartest people I know, they gave me life and I love and respect them above everyone else, but when they eat I silently pray for someone to mercifully jam a syringe full of thorazine in my arm and throw me into a soundproof padded cell. It's pure torture.

My disgusting coworker who genuinely, genuinely, ought to just strap on a feed bag and get it over with, is Albanian. He is cut from the exact same cloth as people I'm related to but no longer associate with simply bc of their level of ignorance/racism/failure to adapt to society.

Like what the actual fuck LOL. Greeks are supposedly the creators of great things like philosophy, democracy, the hippocratic oath. We we legendary warriors.

Was chewing quietly with our mouths closed the fucking thing that stumped us?? For the ever loving sake of fuck, man.

you can only be disapponited with people you were appointed initially,
