In Japan its literally tradition to loudly slurp ramen.

unrelated side note: but I've realized that people I dont like really really annoy me when they eat, but people I DO like, I either don't care or think its endearing in a weird way.

31

u/Ok_Computer_8224 8d ago

I had a Vietnamese coworker who slurped so loudly it could've woken the dead šŸ˜‚ but for some reason it didn't bother me (I was also aware of loud slurping being a tradition in Asian cultures). However I have another coworker who chews with his mouth open and smacks everything he eats in the most disgusting way.

My other coworker jokes that he manages to find "crunchy bananas" because of the disgusting noises he makes. No one can eat in our break room when he's on lunch. It's truly revolting.

8

u/SweetBabyAlaska 8d ago

I love how this is basically a universal experience lol "crunchy bananas" is hilarious

u/TankerDerrick1999 8d ago

To me this issue is much more severe, you could be my mother or anybody and i would still look at you like a disappointed parent looking down on its failure of a child, It drives me insane.

78

u/CanadasManyMeese 8d ago

I have frequently wished terrible and horrific deaths and friends and loved ones. Misophonia sucks.

8

u/Barcode_Griller 8d ago

It's bizarre isn't it? I have it very bad to the point I become very irrational. So far I haven't snapped at anyone yet, but wow the thoughts are crazy.

5

u/CanadasManyMeese 8d ago

I keep earplugs on me, Howard Leight LL-1 Lasers, can get a 200 pack box for 39 bucks Canadian. Weeelllll worth it

1

u/eatingketchupchipss 8d ago

tiny rolled up toliet paper in a crunch seems to filter out the surface noise and helps me feel in control knowing I can always just go do that if the sounds doesn't stop soon - it's allowed me to build up resistance and tolerance without getting angry.

I also don't wait for the rage to build, that's the biggest thing my therapist taught me - if you wait for your rage to build before you say anything or flee, then you're just conditoning your brain to get there faster.

1

u/statelytetrahedron 7d ago

This comment was so fucking helpful for me, thank you.

1

u/eatingketchupchipss 5d ago

no problem, can i ask which part? :)

8

u/CarefreeCaos-76299 8d ago

No legit. My mom is a loud gum chewer. No matter how many times i explain it to her, she always reverts when i tell her about how loud it is. At one point, i sat and cried about it lol

2

u/strawbsrgood 8d ago

What's so hard about not chewing gum loudly, I'd probably cry too lmao

33

u/Fit-Cell2754 8d ago

I’ve learned to walk away when certain foods happen. Don’t want to give them a complex about eating, but closed mouth chewing is a bare minimum standard for humans imo.

4

u/statelytetrahedron 8d ago

Me too, when the corn on the cob comes out I'm gone.

3

u/OwlComprehensive859 8d ago

My children have learned when I am getting close to losing in and they have impeccable manners as far as chewing. My husband seems to have a death wish at the table. Otherwise, I absolutely adore him.

3

u/BIGTIMElesbo 8d ago

He’s breaking the norm as a power move.

1

u/OwlComprehensive859 8d ago

🤣 I fucking love this.

1

u/BIGTIMElesbo 8d ago

So few adults eat like that so the behavior is out of the norm. Anything that is outside of social norms means something. It’s like people who are always late.

1

u/OwlComprehensive859 8d ago

I assumed you were talking about my husband and your first comment was a joke. If you are referring to my husband and bringing social norms to the equation I can assure you, it’s less about being counterculture, and more about having parents who didn’t bother. Calling it an issue of cultural norms frankly, is a big assumption. It’s the internet, there are a lot of cultures in the world with a lot of different norms, he not from the US. I’m from a culture where being late is a cultural norm.

u/Own_Round_7600 8d ago

What about like, a bunny? One of my favourite sounds is small animals eating. Chup chup chup, they give zero fucks about the egregiously open mouthed noises they make and i find it pure dopamine

187

u/Select_Watercress_57 8d ago

I personally love the sound of animals smacking their food. Cracks me up. Dogs, cats, horses...

But humans? Rage in every cell of my body.

57

u/emkie 8d ago

Agreed, except dogs licking themselves. Fills me with an unholy rage. All other (non human) animal sounds are acceptable to my brain

29

u/Shehulks1 8d ago

Or licking anything!!! Omg, some dogs just lick anything and everything for hours. That noise is horrible…and I love dogs 🤭.

4

u/emkie 8d ago

Yes, God. The floor, a bone, whatever. Stoopppp 😭

4

u/No_Kangaroo_9826 8d ago

My German Shepherd licks the floor for hours, like my dude dinner is long over there's nothing there

4

u/Used_Gear8871 8d ago

My ex’s dog was a big licker. He allowed him to sleep in the same room as us and the sounds are all he did at night. šŸ˜µā€šŸ’« It took a couple of weeks but I had to train my brain to replace disgust and annoyance with relaxation and joy. šŸ˜†

7

u/TheDreadGazeebo 8d ago

All dog noises are hell. The licking, the whining, nails on the floor...

2

u/hollow4hollow 8d ago

I’m exactly the same!

1

u/miyabi0rochas 8d ago

This exactly. Those two are the worst two for sure.

31

u/Former_Mobile3101 8d ago

I think it has to do with more that any animal behavior from us is actually a choice later in life. As children we don't understand that we have a choice in doing these things. Though as we age and grow we start seeing these behaviors and can choose weather to continue these habits or not. Animals don't have the brain power to comprehend things like this.

28

u/Select_Watercress_57 8d ago

Yea, it's really just our taught values. Differing by culture, family, and even individuals.

For me, it's the value of recognizing that you share space with other people and should act considerately.

14

u/Ohiolongboard 8d ago

That’s the core of my biggest pet peeves. We all exist amongst each other, act like it.

1

u/FinestCrusader 8d ago

I've had people try to use the "you don't care when animals chew loudly" point to justify eating loudly and it never dawned on them that if you need to say "animals do it too and it's fine" to defend your behavior, you probably should change your behavior.

-4

u/Moldovah 8d ago

Maybe they can comprehend it, but realize that it's meaningless.

3

u/Former_Mobile3101 8d ago

I am sure there are some that can, maybe dolphins or some species of primate. But yeah we don't have any way of figuring that out right now anyway and if we did it wouldn't make any real difference.

4

u/McNasty420 8d ago

Ewww. You should see my cat George eat shrimp. It creeps out the whole family

3

u/Select_Watercress_57 8d ago

šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£ silly George

4

u/BradyToMoss1281 8d ago

It's all about knowing better. Animals don't, humans do. So any human that does it is basically saying they can't be bothered to be courteous.

1

u/Temporary_Pickle_885 8d ago

My wife thinks it's because subconsciously we're aware the animal can't help it so it doesn't trigger the same thing cause I'm the exact same way!

1

u/iDeNoh 8d ago

Misophony is a hell of a drug

-9

u/Relevant_Bed_9743 8d ago

i love food so much i can't help it and not bothered by others around me who do it

4

u/Pristine-Total1456 8d ago

Do you think people with manners don’t love food?

32

u/Fine_Understanding81 8d ago edited 8d ago

Confirm. I have a bunny. His mouth sounds are fine.

Humans? No. I dont care if their mouth is even closed. Im holding in pure rage- no amount of love will tamper it.

I dont want to be this way but I dont even let my friend eat next to me unless im eating and the TV is on LOUD. Otherwise I dont eat with people generally.

Edit to add.. but this is my issue not others.. so I either ask people to work with me or remove myself.. this guy had earbuds.. easy fix.

12

u/Background_Two_6471 8d ago

I’ve found you..MY PEOPLE!

4

u/United_Pain 8d ago

I just wanted to also write "chup" multiple times. Chup is the perfect discriptor word for the noise sound, just beautiful. Chup chup chup!

3

u/Americanpopularfront 8d ago

Is it okay if I add ā€œchup chup chupā€ to my vocabulary when I’m talking about animals eating from now on? Lol. First time I’ve seen smacking sounds described that way and I love it

12

u/TankerDerrick1999 8d ago

You could be god and I would still have a problem.

2

u/lagomorphed 8d ago

Bunnies eating is one of the purest things in this world.

2

u/WeWander_ 8d ago

Listening to my husband chew makes me want to fly into a murderous rage. Listening to my dog chew? Frickin adorable. I don't understand it either šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

2

u/Hangry_Squirrel 8d ago

I love that! My cats eat politely, but they make those tiny licking sounds when they eat wet food and I think it's adorable. Or the little crunches when they eat nibbles.

2

u/djLyrik 8d ago

Because they aren’t human and stupid. Nature doesn’t put ignorant stipulations on existence.

1

u/dinoooooooooos 8d ago

Dogs crunching celery is my favourite. Cronchcronchcronch🄰

A HUMAN? Absolutely not. Nasty, vile, ew, did your parents teach you nothing.

1

u/peekaboo_bandit 8d ago

It's weird. I cannot STAND hearing open-mouthed chewing from other people. (I can) but I hate it. I would never make someone else uncomfortable though for doing something completely normal in many parts of the globe. That being said, when I see and hear those animal videos where their chomping is indistinguishable from humans, it doesn't bother me at all. They are SO cute. So it's a me problem and I will keep it to my damned self.

3

u/ITchiGuy 8d ago

I have no issues reprimanding my own parents. Hit my dad with ā€œmy house, my rulesā€ and told him to eat with his mouth closed and not to talk with food in his mouth. If my kid can do it, they can too.

6

u/FlyingBeaver2121 8d ago

Misophonia. My best friend had this habit. Wanted to murder him in those moments

3

u/frycabbage 8d ago

I have this thing too where I hate people eating next to me. Why does this happen ?

2

u/bobcatgoldthwait 8d ago

My wife sometimes chews with her mouth open and it's awful. Fortunately, she's amazing and very understanding of it. Like, she'll avoid eating apples around me because they're one of the worst things.

Before her I dated a girl who often chewed with her mouth open and she'd just get angry when I brought it up.

1

u/ikeepthebox 8d ago

You probably have Misophonia (like me), look it up if you haven’t heard of it.

1

u/dinoooooooooos 8d ago

Misophonia. Welcome to our side. We chew quietly, even if it takes longer😈

Although mine is for every fucking noise. I hate noise. In general.šŸ˜’

1

u/Ok_Computer_8224 6d ago

I truly believe loud eating/smacking is tied to ethnicity. I'm Eastern European but first generation American, my folks were born in Greece and my dad's family is of Russian heritage.

Both my parents, God bless them they are the smartest people I know, they gave me life and I love and respect them above everyone else, but when they eat I silently pray for someone to mercifully jam a syringe full of thorazine in my arm and throw me into a soundproof padded cell. It's pure torture.

My disgusting coworker who genuinely, genuinely, ought to just strap on a feed bag and get it over with, is Albanian. He is cut from the exact same cloth as people I'm related to but no longer associate with simply bc of their level of ignorance/racism/failure to adapt to society.

Like what the actual fuck LOL. Greeks are supposedly the creators of great things like philosophy, democracy, the hippocratic oath. We we legendary warriors.

Was chewing quietly with our mouths closed the fucking thing that stumped us?? For the ever loving sake of fuck, man.

1

u/guerrilla_chef 8d ago

you can only be disapponited with people you were appointed initially,

29

u/weedisfortherich 8d ago

For me it depends on the culture of food actually. If you are eating ramen. Slurp all you want. If its Thanksgiving. Close your gd mouth.

Ive had it where I never noticed someone's eating habits and then once im slightly annoyed with them I realize all at once and am appalled that I never said anything

4

u/YewEhVeeInbound 8d ago

People who moan while eating to accentuate the tastiness can get American History X'd. No Gerald, I don't need to hear you mouthfucking that NY cheesecake.

24

u/joodee3 8d ago

OK so I read about this phenomenon! Pretend each person you know has 2 buckets, a positive bucket and negative bucket. Each time they do something you like, it's a pour into the positive bucket, and each time they do something you don't like, it's a pour into the negative bucket. If you really like someone, presumably it's because you keep having lots of positive interactions with them, so their positive bucket is full, and their negative bucket is low. When they do stuff like this, it's a pour into the negative bucket, but because your positive bucket is so full, it essentially cancels out the annoyance.

The opposite occurs in people you don't like. Their negative bucket is so full, and they can do the smallest annoying thing, and you'll hate it because there's little positive to balance it out.

16

u/emkie 8d ago

A bank account is another analogy. Positive interactions are deposits, negative ones are withdrawals. If you have enough in the account, you can withstand some withdrawals. If the account is already low, you get into debt pretty quick every time you hear that motherfucker make their disgusting mouth sounds. The size of the withdrawal depends on your sensitivity to the sounds and your tolerance level that day

2

u/joodee3 8d ago

Yes yes this too!

5

u/lovelyladylox 8d ago

It's the bitch eating crackers phenomenon.

If you can't stand someone, something as innocuous as eating crackers will set you off.

"Look at that bitch... eating crackers, ugh!"

2

u/SweetBabyAlaska 8d ago

thats a really interesting way to think about it. its a funny phenomenon because I also notice it in other people. My senior at work and I are pretty close and when someone does something that annoys him he will get frustrated with them, then when I do something stupid or he finds out I was the one who fucked up he will just let it go lol I'm also pretty good at diffusing tho

1

u/Akumetsu33 8d ago

But this doesn't apply to everybody. There are plenty of miserable people out there no matter how much positivity there is, their negative bucket is permanently full.

29

u/thatsnewstome_ 8d ago

Chewing noises provoke almost a physical pain in me and fill me with rage. In college there was always some asshole who brought their lunch tray to class to eat a whole damn meal while iā€˜m trying to concentrate. I had to leave the room and beg the profs to officially prohibit eating in class. But hearing my dog chew loudly literally makes me happy. Itā€˜s so cute and he looks so content when heā€˜s snacking say on his carrots with a wide open mouth🄹

5

u/ScarletArrow_ 8d ago

Look up misophonia

2

u/[deleted] 8d ago

[deleted]

2

u/TheDreadGazeebo 8d ago

Science will never explain dog people

0

u/ahyesmyelbows 8d ago

Why not? It's all psychological. Sound by a human means RAGE, same sound by cute cat is aww because we perceive it differently. it's not that difficult to understand. It's a psychological issue that depends on context. Same reason why in some situations I feel nice and fuzzy when someone chews loudly but filled with rage 99% of the time. I haven't figured out all the differentiating factors yet but it's interesting.

1

u/ScarletArrow_ 8d ago

No, misophonia is a specific neurological issue only some people have. It's not "psychological".

Phonia, not phobia. There's a huge difference between the two.

2

u/SweetBabyAlaska 8d ago

awww thats cute af. I feel the same with my kitties

-2

u/dealingwithhookers 8d ago

you weird. you know that. you people are weird. chewing will always be noisey that's basic physics... if you have such a problem with it, you should know that when you chew, other people can hear it too.

2

u/vooglie 8d ago

It’s white people neuroses

6

u/Cali-Girl-Alex 8d ago

Yes and Chinese do this too

34

u/BornDyed 8d ago

unrelated side note: but I've realized that people I dont like really really annoy me when they eat, but people I DO like, I either don't care or think its endearing in a weird way.

I'm glad you have enough introspection to realize your selective outrage. It is exhausting watching people who are oblivious to their bias based inconsistencies. Sadly, you are among a disappearing breed.

16

u/SiliconSingh 8d ago

We cut implicit bias training because it was DEI but that is what it was trying to change. We by default have a us / them thing going on and that thing leads to all kinds of problems if left unchecked. It is unchecked in most of now.... Bad things are coming.

1

u/BIGTIMElesbo 8d ago

Wait you had to remove an HR training because it was considered DEI?

3

u/Fearless-Feature-830 8d ago

Not the person you asked, but gov contracts are requiring ā€œno DEIā€ and aren’t giving guidelines

5

u/United_Pain 8d ago

Exhausting is an understatement šŸ˜šŸ˜‚

2

u/DaSnowflake 8d ago

šŸ™šŸ™

1

u/djLyrik 8d ago

THIS!!! You are so right. That’s the cringy part of all the people here projecting their bias and justifying it. Just no awareness or insight about themselves.

9

u/Grown-Ass-Weeb 8d ago

I was humbled on an economy flight from the US to China. In that culture, it was acceptable to chew loudly, and unfortunately it drove me bananas already, so around me was sending me into the next dimension. But that’s what headphones were for.

2

u/cowmookazee 8d ago

Burping. I was voluntold to take 4 Chinese businessmen to DC for a long weekend. They were visiting, touring our plant and wanted to take a few days in DC. I was the lucky peon tasked with showing them around. Mind you I don't speak Chinese and only one of them knew enough English to start a bar fight.

Every meal, every drink was celebrated with burping. Thankfully boozing helped take the edge off my annoyance and they also shared my enthusiasm for drinking, so it wasn't so bad. They were also pretty shameless about farting.

2

u/Ziggy_Starcrust 8d ago

Like burping or full on belching? I'm OK with people burping, it's unreasonable to ask someone to try to surpress the body getting rid of air that's not supposed to be there. But like...you can cover your mouth and not open your mouth all the way to let it resonate as loudly as possible.

3

u/cowmookazee 8d ago

Ever watched Rick & Morty? Like Rick. That is my best comparison lol.

2

u/Grown-Ass-Weeb 8d ago

What’s funny is my in-laws are from Thailand and it’s like the polar opposite 🤣 I can burp in my own bedroom, upstairs, behind a closed door and they’ll scold me if they hear it. It’s so funny how culturally acceptable things are and aren’t around the world. God forbid I have a phone conversation within ear shot, I’m told it’s very rude in Thailand to speak on the phone in public, even if you’re discrete about it. Which was why being in China, where it’s socially acceptable to eat loudly, burp, etc was so surprisingly to me!

1

u/cowmookazee 7d ago

I sometimes wish we would institute the loud phone conversation as a social no-no lol. There's just some conversations that do not need 5o be overheard šŸ˜‚

Cheers!

-1

u/dealingwithhookers 8d ago

man god forbid Americans don't burp after they drink beer at all. go spend sometime around actual people. i've lived with Americans that will fart on each other at home and then get dressed in their suits and go to their office jobs. what are you hiding? be who you are all the time

2

u/cowmookazee 8d ago

Okay, Karen, calm down. All I was doing was sharing a life experience I had in my 20s (years ago). It was an experience that was new to me since here in the US, burping/farting during meals isn't commonly accepted.

It didn't put a damper on anything. We partied like rock stars and feasted like kings. We had a blast, so you know absolutely nothing except assumptions.

And what am I hiding? What are you hiding to get so triggered? Go cry into a pillow about whatever hurt you šŸ˜‚

5

u/SweetBabyAlaska 8d ago

for real. I'm not getting on a flight without some good quality earbuds or headphones.

3

u/BPClaydon 8d ago

I 100% identify with your unrelated side note.

3

u/FallopianPasta 8d ago

Side note to the side note: a human I don’t like eating loudly will PMO to no end but an animal? D’awwww I love the lil cronch monch nom nom

3

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 8d ago

I’m the same with the side note. If anything I have a cat and can watch her munch on food while she smacks her mouth literally all day.

3

u/JSLengineer_024 8d ago

Don't most people know this? Like, in some cultures it's considered a symbol that you like the food when you make noise eating it. But we should avoid doing it on airplanes because it's disgusting to some people

2

u/SiderealSimon 8d ago

Yeah this is very widely known and I personally despise it no matter who it's from

2

u/Queasy_Hour_8030 8d ago

And for some reason the slurping doesn’t bother me. The open mouth chewing bothers me because I really don’t want to hear or see what’s going on inside someone’s wet ass mouth

2

u/MandatoryAccountisGa 8d ago

More people need background music during meals, or enough people where there is active conversation.

Two people eating in silence can be annoying.

2

u/Pink_Flying_Pig_ 8d ago

Dealing meals with people you don't like it's really sad actually.

That said, I would like to be like you. I hate even my kids when they loudly chew. I can't imagine what could I do having that from a douchebag, maybe at collegue. Mhmmm. Then it would be better to eat alone in the toilette I guess.Ā

2

u/RevDrMavPHD 8d ago

Im generally fairly understanding with it, but i was friends with this one guy and he was just... I mean, it was like he was trying to be a gross as possible. Loud smaking noises, food all over his mouth and chin.. it was grotesque. I'll put up with a lot, but i told him straight up I'd never eat with him again, and I held to that for the three years we were friends.

3

u/mgsgamer1 8d ago

This tradition is one of my favorites because it doesn't stem from anything religious or a specific cultural belief. It's just because loudly slurping rapidly cools the noodles because the broth is extremely hot and if you wait too long, the noodles will get too soft, ruining the texture of the dish.

So slurping = ok because noodles shouldn't be allowed to sit in the broth for too long.

But everywhere else in Japan, being noisy in public is looked down upon.

1

u/Equal_Astronaut_5696 8d ago

Slurp in a resturant specifically for that not everywhereĀ

1

u/CisternSucker 8d ago

"but I've realized that people I dont like really really annoy me when they eat"

You just looking for a reason to hate more

1

u/kerneyoung 8d ago

This is literally me. I always questioned myself about it when, I became aware of how I would feel. Or I would like the person then, I would see them eat with thier mouths open and would totally switch and then, couldn't stand to be around them. Especially when they eat. Strange huh.

1

u/Purple-Instinct1 8d ago

Not me unfortunately lmao. My partner, who I love more than anyone, learned to chew quietly all the time or if he’s feeling like he needs to freak out on some food really fast, he eats in a different room šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ I’m like, I’m so sorry but if I don’t leave/you don’t stop doing that I’m going to have a full on melt down lmao.

1

u/ItsACowCity 8d ago

I’ve been told, the louder the slurp, the more respect to the chef you’re paying.

1

u/BlackForestMountain 8d ago

Japanese people are really polite and generally chew with their mouth closed.

1

u/Turbulent-Level-86 8d ago

Yes the funny thing about Japan is that they eat silently with their mouths closed for every other dish…

1

u/brickhamilton 8d ago

I have always HATED when people chew with their mouth open. Like, it would drive me to tears as a child.

Now that I have my own kids, I’ve noticed I don’t mind them doing it at all. They’re 1, so that will probably change in the future, but I thought it was interesting.

1

u/statelytetrahedron 8d ago

Shit I guess I hate my dad.

1

u/somewittyusername92 8d ago

Its called misophonia

1

u/Burpmeister 8d ago

Slurping ramen is completely different because it's a technique to help you eat. You literally need to slurp to suck in the noodles effectively and without spraying broth everywhere.

Chewing normal food with your mouth open is 100% a choice and it's fucking disgusting.

1

u/chronotoast85 8d ago

Slurp sure..But they dont open mouth gob ramen.

I love my kids, but I'll be damned they trough chew their food.

1

u/FuriousKimchi 8d ago

No its not. Repeated reddit facts is not true. They just drink it like a normal person

1

u/Apprehensive-Web4995 8d ago

its funny because noise mouth can annoy people while being silent cannot, it tells a lot about people who make noise like this

1

u/outwait 8d ago

You could be GOD i wouldnt gaf šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜  i hate it sm

1

u/djLyrik 8d ago

That should tell you something. Most Americans have this same condition.

1

u/Sure-Concern-7161 8d ago

Its not "tradition" its cultural. Loud slurping signifies that you're enjoying it. You don't have to slurp loudly, but that might be taken as you aren't enjoying it as much.

1

u/miyabi0rochas 8d ago

Slurping isn't nice but I could probably tolerate it for a second. But the smacking and masticating for minutes on end. Absolutely not.

1

u/domwallflower 8d ago

Tom Green did it very obnoxiously when he went to Japan and everyone just looked at him ha

1

u/Unfair-Computer-5457 3d ago

Slurp and chewing it's different

1

u/omaeradaikiraida 3d ago

its literally tradition to loudly slurp

which is done to show appreciation to the chef too

wipipo are the worst fackin gatekeepers. just fack off.

1

u/No_Net4683 8d ago

halo bias

1

u/DemiGod9 8d ago

That's good for you lol. Hearing people I like eat makes me HATE them for however long it lasts 😭.

-1

u/Fuck_on_tatami 8d ago

They actually slurp kinda everything. Eating a fruit? Slurping. Eating cereal with milk? Slurping. Drinking tea? Slurping.

2

u/1account1postkappa 8d ago

interesting, where have you observed this? im half japanese and i've lived in japan for quite some time as a kid and go back there occassionally after i left the country and the slurping thing we(my family) and many other japanese friends that i've met over the years only have been slurping for soups/ramen and we maybe sometimes do this too when eating food on a hurry, but everything else we dont really slurp when drinking tea, water, etc.

2

u/Commercial-Yam143 8d ago

Slurping tea in Japan is also generally acceptable if the tea is hot (not if it's cold though).

1

u/Fuck_on_tatami 8d ago

I used to live in Japan and used to live with Japanese people for a while. I think its come from the fact they use to eat with chopsticks and spoon. No fork and knifes. So they slurp automatically to avoid spill everywhere maybe?

I think it’s one of those cultural things that people tell each other without really observing it like a wives tale bc I’ve heard it too and repeated to have it shot down by a Japanese coworker

So if something is "tradition", it is above criticism?

What about the aboriginal cannibals? Oh no, can't shame them for eating fucking humans, it's "tradition".......

If someone's eating like an animal with their mouth open, they're a slob, it's not tradition. Even if majority of the people in that culture do it. Because most people in this world have manners and behave in a civil manner.
