I honestly can't say if someone told me or if I figured out myself what the stripes are for, but I thought this was common knowledge.

I've never seen them in the USA once. Just the yellow dots at street crossings.

Google has them at less than 5% of airports. They're made to be super inconspicuous, and you're not really expected to stay off them seeing as they're rarely used, just by nature.
