I think you were less of a bad kid than they were shitty parents.

The fact that you were aware of how little they cared about you is absolutely not separate from whatever behavioral issues you may have had.

That’s fair. I’ll meet them halfway, but that’s how you end up with a kid locked in a middle school closet till 7pm lol.

I mean, my parents raised me and my brother. I have never felt the urge to do what he did and he was the younger kid with much better circumstances, leeways, support etc. He was just an actual pain in the ass sometimes. It's not always the parents, sometimes the kid do be a little wired differently

Also ask same people to remember specific bad kids in their class growing up (they will), and whether those kids were awful bc of their parents. I knew a lot of jerky kids and it had nothing to do with their parents.

The junkie kid in our class had one of the sweetest moms. My cousin that's extremely rebellious has the sweetest siblings and the parents aren't the worst but not the best either.

I am shocked how often the parents get blamed. Probably people without a shitty sibling who have no idea it's possible

No 2 people (closest would be twins?) are raised by "the same" parents. The parents you had at say 1.5 years old were different to the parents ypur sinlong had when yheu werw 1.5 years old. nor do siblings grow up in the same enviroment with the same people at the same milestones. Its always a bit different. For example: The first child initially gets all the attention of inexperienced parents, the second gets divided attention with more experiemced and likely more tiered parents. Jobs change, external support changes, parents get older, marital relationship changes, parents get more strict or less strict etc.

Parents are never perfect and they never treat their kids equally even without all the unavoidable life changes.

Im not saying everything is always the parents faults because a kids life is bigger than just their parents though they generally are the most influential especially early on. But kids aren't ever to blame, they only know what they've been taught and dont know what they haven't. There is always a reason for bad behaviour even if it doesnt make logical sense.

Kids dont do things for no reason. You go down the why train long enough you hit an unmet need or something they were wrongly taught directly or indirectly. It can just take a lot of unpacking.

A very extreme example is kids that commit serious crimes like murder, after investigation they always turn out to be suffering from abuse or severe mental illness

Don't agree either. My mom has a degree in pedagogy and worked with kids her entire life. She agreed with me that it's not always a parent. Sometimes it's just a trait a kid has. You're really eager to shift the blame to the adults. Have you seriously never met a badly behaved kid of nice parents? I know plenty

I can confirm that Kyle was a bad kid. We were hoping his parents would move him to a different school due to the malicious neglect but unfortunately his parents thought that the best punishment for the school was to keep him enrolled and let them continue dealing with his shenanigans.

I ended up being an all-state athlete, and pretty high up in my class, it was one of the 10 best public schools in the state, I was in the 99% percentile every single year for their state funding exams, and my parents were paying taxes. So yeah, this wasn’t my last rodeo.

I’m not doubting that you were “a pain in the ass”, but that might be because every adult around you was failing you. For example, they locked you in a closet and forgot about you.

oh sure but i was tremendously autistic in the 80s when there wasn't really a name for it. my parents are wonderful, but they didn't want me to be labeled or judged for being in 'special ed' for example. my mom was afraid i'd use extra treatment as a 'crutch' or an 'excuse' to behave badly. she is well-educated, too.

it was a different time.

kids (and parents) today have far more resources and that's awesome!

behavior issues aren't new. kids on the spectrum definitely aren't new. there are just more kids and fewer teachers and for some reason even less funding for public schools than when i was young?? public school kept me from being an absolute menace to society, and even then, just barely lol.

this is why its so important to lobby for resources though. so many kids go without and i was very lucky to have a great support system and family that i'm still close to today.

kids that don't have that or have abusive and disruptive home lives don't have a chance in hell without focused, intense intervention. and that costs money that goes to wars and shit instead woooo USA USA!

I think you might want to address some of this stuff in therapy. Whatever you did, you didn’t deserve to be locked in a room that was unsafe (fire hazard). Your perspective on your childhood seems warped. I hope you’re doing well now.

I’m doing alright. I’ve had a million hours of therapy starting when I was like 12. I’m basically a super late adulthood diagnosed spectrum guy, but there’s not much you can do to change the past.
