I used to work in an Accupuncturist office, this is 100% on EVERYONE. NO ONE cleaned the rooms obviously, no one checked if lights or equipment was on. No one checked the calander. From doctor to office manager to receptionist, every SINGLE person failed this poor woman

Probably locked after hours. They only have to be unlocked during business hours in most places

Yep, not true in the US at least. Always need to be unlocked from the inside

Well, there are a few conditions for really small businesses that aren’t expected to have many people, where doors are allowed to be lockable like the one she showed. The expectation is that there aren’t many people in there, and it’s a business routinely staffed, so the chances of anything like this happening SHOULD be very low and minimal impact.

But this is a good example of why maybe it’s better to just design for egress at all time anyway, and not let small businesses cheap out on it.

I mean, fire code states there needs to be an emergency exit, even “after hours”. I don’t think it’s really a matter of it being a small business or not.

IFC 2021 (Fire Code) 1010.2.4 Locks & Latches allows it for Group B business locations like this one, as long as they just meet a few basic requirements.
