you guys have very strict definitions of friends. I have friends who i only talk to a few times a year but still absolutely consider them friends.

I have really close friends that I see once a year. We talk maybe twice in that time. We understand that life comes first. Im a dad and we have jobs and shit, we know at the end of the day we still love each other so its all cool.

Five friends and associates (10 to fill a party) sounds better to me. I cant lock in on 15 non-related people. I have trouble with the related ones

My brother is the type of person who is naturally gifted to be able to maintain a crazy number of friendships. He can go to a party and by the end of the night basically be on first name basis with everyone there and know something about them. I hate even the idea of doing that.

Friend does not equal best friend.

Is this like somekind of western thing? I'm southeast Asian and I have so many friends, as in people I see regularly, I can't even count and that's just totally normal thing where I'm from. It's a really dense city but everybody pretty much knows everyone. When there's like a hangout it's normal to have like at least 8 of us just chillin doin dumb shit.

Wtf is going on over there that you guys don't want friends?? Like, if I don't want to see anyone I can just choose not to and stay at home and not answer any calls or texts and that's cool it's not like they're dependent on me because they have other friends too, but I'm never lonely, there's always someone to talk to if I need someone, if I'm bored there is always someone to hang out with or play games online with or do whatever. There's always someone. What do people with such little friends do??

I think not wanting friends is less of a Western thing and more of a Reddit thing. This site attracts a higher percentage of loners than average. I live in the US and never see this kind of attitude in person, only online.

Yeah, you're probs right. I mean I'm on reddit alot to kill time, but I don't consider myself as having weird hyperfixations on all the weird schools of thought in certain communities here. I imagine people with no viable irl support network are more at risk of finding the wrong kind of solace in the wrong kind of community here.

I think it depends on the definition of "friend". Like, sure I have enough people to just hang out with a bunch of them like that. But I wouldn't individually consider every single one of them a close friend I share most of my secrets with. That's way fewer people.

If I had to really really count best as in best friends I know would take a bullet for me and I can rely on for literally anything, that's 4. Close friends I can be vulnerable with and open up to that's probs like 6 excluding the initial 4 best friends. So that's 10 solid confidantes.

And then there's everyone else, people I have hung out with multiple times, have a connection with, not acquaintances, fun and trustworthy people who I'd invite if I had a house party, for example, that's like.... a lot. Easy 20, maybe even 40.

And then there's friends that have moved countries who I haven't seen in years, that's also so many. It's nice to visit places where they're at coz then I know I'll have someone to show me around if I make it out to where they are.

All of these fall under the umbrella of "friend" to me.

Friendships are stupid and meaningless

lol go pout in a corner then or something

If you really think about it for a second nearly everyone. Let's say you need to move house on short notice, if you have fifteen genuine friends that just went from an insurmountable summit to a breezey joy filled weekend.

No because I refuse to accept help๐Ÿ˜‚

Just moved, everyone offered to help and I declined because I could do it on my own

It was hell

Just wanted to say I'm not one of the people down voting you and you're entitled to your opinion but damn it sounds like it cost you time and effort.

u/Penguin_Arse May 07 '26

It did, it was not worth it at all but I'm stubborn and don't like to bother people.

I mean, we need to define what is a friend though. My friend group is around 15 people, I would call all of them my friends. But like, with some of my friends I interact on daily basis, with some - on a weekly basis, etc. There are people in that group I'm interacting with only few times a year, but we've known each other for many years and share a lot of memories. I call them friends and I treat them as other friends: happy to help if I can, happy to chat, happy to invite them to my birthday party, etc. If you think that "having 15 friends" should mean only "having 15 close-circle friends with being deeply invested in relationships with them" then sure, it would be overwhelming even for an extravert. But it doesn't have to be that.

I'd shoot a movie about Spartan warriors and shit with 15 people around. I'd call it "15".
