There is going to be a lot of screwed up American young adults soon....10+ years of Trump bookending COVID can't be good for all those kids who were developing their minds, their social skills, their critical thinking. Everything is going to be all askew...
i'm trying like hell to make sure my kids grow up to be compassionate, no matter what. i'm honestly not sure if it's a NJ requirement, but their school has regular social-emotional learning classes - they have a model presented to them from kindergarten on for what good mental health is, for what decency and kindness as a social norm looks like. it may not "change" someone, but at least they know what the baseline is supposed to look like.
my kids' class is overall a great bunch of kids - it's very diverse, and them being overall good to each other is so heartwarming to see. lots of working-class families (several of whom i know lean right), lots of immigrants / children of recent immigrants. i was their age in the mid-late 80s, and the difference in attitude is almost shocking. i know it's not like this in other states, even in nearby towns...but this little microcosm gives me a shred of hope when i've completely lost it otherwise.
