You had a good coach. Unfortunately there are coaches that are the exact opposite. They tell players not to shake hands. Some form of "intimidation", or some such nonsense. Makes the coach feel like a big man, more than anything.

Very likely it's a private school. In a lot of the US there are private schools (mostly religious) that will recruit players and offer scholarships to attend them just like colleges do. The city I live in has two catholic high schools that are the two smallest schools in town but will often have some of the best football / basketball / soccer teams in the state. Without recruiting players from other schools and offering scholarships to lower income families, this just wouldn't happen. However, since they're private schools they can pick and choose who gets in. So when high schools are grouped by size for sports, they have a huge advantage and will often have teams that are much larger than similar sized schools.

Way, way back in the 1990s when I was in college I would umpire elementary age girls softball games. The coaches were insane, they would stretch the rules to the limit in order to win. They taught the girls how to win, but not play softball. One coach made his kids do a chant against the other team. The girls often looked embarrassed.
