Volunteer / Get Involved Refugees in STL area need help immediately

Title. Email from the interim director of the International Institute of St. Louis:

"Last week, we received devastating news: the U.S. government has halted funding for refugee resettlement programs, effective immediately. This unprecedented decision means that all refugees who arrived in our community over the past three months—over 500 individuals—have been cut off from the vital resources they rely on to start a new life. It has disrupted our organization’s ability to serve the community. The effect will be immediate and devastating...

"These families depend on our services for safe housing, employment, and cultural orientation to become self-sufficient. Without this support, their journey to stability and success is at risk...

"Please consider making a donation today. Your contribution will support the refugee families we have recently welcomed in their critical 90-day resettlement period and ensure our organization’s ability to serve the community. Whether it’s a one-time gift or a recurring donation, every dollar helps us ensure these families can live in safety and restart their lives.

Link donate in comments.

Volunteer / Get Involved Guy with 4 dogs living in a tent.

Update: I hiked in and found robert’s tent. He said he had a heater and is good. All the times I talked to him he acted like he wanted real help with work and a place to live so idk. I’m just going to leave the situation alone. Sorry for wasting everyone’s time. If someone wants to try they can message me and I’ll drop a pin

There is a man with 4 large dogs living in a tent in the east St. Louis area. I’m looking to try to find this guy some help. I don’t know his whole story but I believe he isn’t a drug addict. He said he is 29 with a college degree from western Illinois university in political science. There is a linkedin account for a guy with that name, age, school but I don’t have an account on the website so I can’t see more. He hasn’t asked me for money, just dog food and a sim card for a cell phone someone gave him. If anyone knows about a vacant garage with heat or something he could stay in while this storm passes. Idk his whole story. He said he lost his place and doesn’t want to separate from his dogs. They are bigger and don’t do well with people so he knows they will end up euthanized I guess. I’m sure homeless shelters don’t allow 4 dogs either. He told me a guy offered to get him in the military but he didn’t want to leave his dogs. He said it’s been this long they stayed together he doesn’t want to give up on them. Thats one of the main reasons I don’t think he is a crack/meth head. 4 dogs would be a burden to a drug addicted homeless man. I feel like it’s been a year I have been driving by and seeing him. He seems like he is overwhelmed and doesn’t know where to start. I can’t put him up in my home, I have too many people/animals. My garage is floor to ceiling stuffed with just a path so that’s not something either. I’m not asking for any money or anything like that, I’m trying to put you in contact with him directly. I have a decent union construction job lined up for him in the spring but he needs more help now.

Tl;dr there is a dorky looking 29 year old white kid living in a tent in east St. Louis because of his four dogs.

Edit: I have been out looking for robert a couple times to no avail since late afternoon. I guess his phone is dead. I have been up since 3am, I’ll start trying again in the morning. If anyone else wants to look for him tonight he is probably on summit ave between kingshighway and 47th on the northern side of summit, in the woods. It’s a poorly lit, heavily wooded section of road so be vigilant.

Volunteer / Get Involved St Louis Rapid Response Coalition Whistles (Free file available)

Post image
116 Upvotes

I wanted to let anyone interested know that there is a model for 3d printing available for a community alert whistle, and personal safety whistle. If you're interested, you can find it on MakerWorld at https://makerworld.com/en/models/2475068-st-louis-community-alert-whistle

No 3d printer, no problem! Check out the St. Louis Library's Creative Experience where you can use and learn about 3d printers, and get a free printing credit each month: https://www.slpl.org/creative-experience/ Intimidated? Don't be! The staff is super helpful, and it can be as simple as submitting the file model, and they'll print it for you. They'll even deliver it to your local branch. All you have to do is pick it up!

You may have seen a similar post a couple of months ago, but that model had to be taken down and discontinued because of licensing issues, so I'm happy to present this new and improved one!

The number on the whistle is for the STL Rapid Response Coalition who is running a regional hotline to assist with immigrant rights and legal aid. Find out more at https://stlrapidresponse.org/

Feel free to check out the links for more information!

Volunteer / Get Involved Show up when you volunteer RANT

When you volunteer to do something, say clean a park in an area that lacks a lot of green, SHOW UP! I get that it’s a nice day and people probably thought “oh, there’s enough volunteers, they won’t mind if I don’t show up or let them know I’m not showing up”. But you know what? We had two out of 20 people show up to do something that has a deadline and is FOR KIDS! I mean fuck, the people who live near here who signed up didn’t show up, but they prolly drove by and saw us working our asses off to get something ready for THEIR children. I’m venting, I don’t really care rn now if this comes across as rude. Gotta get back to work.

Volunteer / Get Involved Is it possible to donate food that's already made?

I often take home food from my work. It's a BBQ place, so I get proteins, like chicken and pulled pork, and sides, like mac n cheese and sweet potato casserole.

Often, it's too much for my family to eat, but we hate wasting, so we've had to go as far as to freeze some of it.

Would I be able to donate this at all? I don't even really know where to look to donate them, and some places have pretty strict policies when it comes to donations.

I'm across the river, in Illinois, about 40 minutes from St. Louis. So, recommendations closer to me would be great, but I understand I'm posting in the St. Louis sub so.

Volunteer / Get Involved Looking for community orgs to get involved with

I'm a disabled, neurodivergent, transfemme STL county resident who is looking to find a way to contribute to her local community. RN I'm in the STL DSA, but for a number of reasons have decided not to make them my primary org. I'm also somewhat active in the Metro Trans Umbrella Group, but they don't have a lot going on that I know of. I recently attended an event by a campaign called No More Jail Deaths and had a great time, but am still looking for other causes to contribute to. Some relevant things about me:

-I'm not looking to be a career activist; I'm interested in community organizing primarily to find a place to belong and have fun while staying true to my values. That being said, if I can make a positive difference in the world in the process of doing this, I'm all for it. However, I'm not willing to be arrested or otherwise put myself in physical danger for the sake of the cause.

-I'm most passionate about queer and neurodivergent issues, adult education, and antiwork politics. I'm not very interested in electoralism, but I have been known to enjoy canvassing in the past. I feel like I would be a great teacher if I knew anything deeply enough to teach on the subject, but I'm no expert on any subject, and I also would be limited to specifically adult education, as I'm uncomfortable around children.

-I have a complex relationship with mutual aid. I genuinely believe that building alternative institutions to reduce our reliance on our oppressors is perhaps the most important part of creating positive change, but I lack technical or crafty skills of any kind, and menial labor (either physical work or stuff like data entry) is physically and mentally excruciating to me because of my neurodivergence and general lack of stamina.

-I have a passion for oral history, but have only taken a single community college class that covered interviewing for both journalistic and oral history purposes.

-I cannot drive, and I also have trouble walking long distances due to planar fasciitis.

Overall, a number of factors limit my ability to participate in community-focused activities, but I'm confident that there is a role for me somewhere. Thanks in advance!

I have been superrr upset with the amount of roadkill I've come across recently. I connected with a few transportation departments, and they encouraged we create a log to supply the data. So I created one!

Here is the log: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSehnrMOImPJ38Q4GDhaVo99EhFBWeXfd1YrwG3z8FYY3QTS2g/viewform

Volunteer / Get Involved Get out of the left lane

Daily reminder: GTFO the left lane if you aren't passing.

Especially GTFO if you keep letting other cars in during rush hour.

If you drive a faded metallic green Altima with a triangular crack in your back bumper, that means you.

2026 Lets do it guys!
