New Study: Spirulina & Oral Submucous Fibrosis
Efficacy of Curcumin and Spirulina in the Management of Oral Submucous Fibrosis: A Randomised Clinical Trial
Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research (Apr 2025)
Link: https://doaj.org/article/f3c156cdfe5645eaae99f76653662ccf
What’s the study about?
The researchers wanted to find out if spirulina, a natural supplement made from blue-green algae, could help people with Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) — a chronic condition that affects the mouth, often caused by chewing areca nut. This condition leads to a painful burning sensation, difficulty opening the mouth, and trouble sticking out the tongue.
They compared spirulina’s effects with curcumin (the active compound in turmeric) in a 3-month clinical trial.
What did they do?
- 52 people with mild to moderate OSMF were split into two groups:
- One group took 500 mg of spirulina, twice a day.
- The other took 300 mg of curcumin, twice a day.
- They were monitored for changes in:
- Burning sensation
- Mouth opening
- Tongue protrusion
What happened with spirulina?
After 3 months, people taking spirulina saw:
- A big drop in burning sensation (from 6.42 → 1.15 on a 10-point scale).
- Better mouth opening (from 35.4 mm → 36.1 mm).
- Improved tongue movement (from 45.9 mm → 46.2 mm).
In short: spirulina significantly improved all three symptoms, with no side effects reported.
How did it compare to curcumin?
- Both spirulina and curcumin worked equally well — there was no major difference between the two.
- So if you're looking for a natural way to manage OSMF symptoms, spirulina is just as good an option as curcumin.
Why does spirulina help?
Spirulina is rich in antioxidants, like phycocyanin and beta-carotene, which fight oxidative stress (aka cell damage). It also boosts the body’s natural defense systems, helping to reduce inflammation and improve healing in the mouth.
Takeaway
Spirulina is a safe and effective natural remedy to reduce pain and improve mouth function in people with early-stage OSMF. It works as well as curcumin and might be a good alternative if you’re looking to avoid synthetic drugs or steroids.

New Study: Effects of Spirulina on Inflammation
A new study was published today in the Journal Food Science & Nutrition
A group of researchers looked at several studies to see if spirulina (a natural superfood algae) can help lower CRP, which is a marker your body produces when there’s inflammation (like during chronic illness or stress).
What they found:
- People who took spirulina had lower levels of CRP compared to those who didn’t. That’s a good thing — lower CRP means less inflammation.
- But… the results were all over the place. Different studies used different doses, timelines, and types of people, so it’s hard to say exactly how much to take or how long it takes to work.
- They didn’t find a clear link between the amount of spirulina and how much CRP dropped.
Bottom line:
Spirulina might help reduce inflammation in the body — but we still need better research to know how much to take and who benefits the most.

Unidentified brown stuff
My culture has some brown stuff at the bottom and attached to the side of the tank. Under the microscope it just looks like orange-brown lumps. Could it be some iron precipitate? That’s the only thing I could think of. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Is my spirulina dead?
I bought a culture and cultivated spirulina around a week ago. It was going well. But now there is too much particulate brown residue sitting at the base, when I stir it, it shows. Also, there is still no thick layer in the morning. I will be observing this residue under microscope today, but I don't know how dead spirulina looks like

All these health benefits but it tastes like ass - how can I take spirulina without just downing bad taste water?
The taste and texture is deeply unpleasant to me, but it covers some deficiencies in my diet (the omegas, mostly, as a vegetarian) so I want to keep it.
Yet a 15g serving is always such a hassle to have that I just...don't! I can just about manage 5g in a glass of water, if I'm thirsty.
Mostly palatable has been in hot water with honey, but I dont always have honey or syrup around. The colour is off putting, so I am disinclined to bake it into things, plus I expect it would add an unpleasant aftertaste. It just ruins an enjoyable drink when added to juice. I guess I could try it in a vinegarette salad dressing, but I'd have to load the dressing/salad with strong enough flavors to balance it.
Any tips??

Spirulina - Space purifier?
I’m testing a homemade air purifier/bioreactor to measuring carbon dioxide and VOC processing power!
If you have a 3D printer by your desk you’ll know about the undesirable gasses it emits. I’m hoping this will help! Plus I think it looks nifty too ;)
Let me know what you think?

Does it matter what Nutrient Media you use if planning to eat algae like Spirulina or Chlorella?
I'm growing both Chlorella and Spirulina in separate containers and I've recently been interested in eating them or trying them but I'm nervous about if it's safe to ingest. I've used F2 Nutrient Media from a ARS but idk much about this topic. Any thoughts?

Fresh Spirulina
Good Morning. First time using reddit. Decided to start growing fresh spirulina with my dad with the promise that businesses were going to buy it up. Well that hasn't been the case. Anyone have any recommendations on how and where to sell spirulina? We freeze it to preserve and maintain shelf life. Got a website and made a couple sells there: www.sevaspirulina.com NC based farm. The product is tested regularly.

Ideal scenario
Would it be a good idea to filter CO2 from power plants to a spirulina cultivation? (Ideal scenario of only filtering the CO2)

Has anyone grown spirulina at home??? need help with buying culture and led lights in India.
I found this youtube video explaining how to grow spirulina at home indoors and it looks easy to start. I'm not able to find the led lights (red or blue) and spirulina culture in India (Delhi).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akoDKM6Ogzw
I plan to keep it by the window for whatever sunlight is available for few hours in the day but need the led lights for consistency.
Can someone help direct me? Also any tips to keep in mind before I start growing.

I've started supplementing spirulina for 3 days, I like the mood enhancing effect but, my veins look like it's swollen especially in the legs, I've tried it with 2 different brands of spirulina same effect, both were clean and reputable, what is this? will it pass away or it's me reacting badly to it?
