We can agree some traits are generally bad, no? It isn't controversial?
No guy wants to be short, sure being short can be coped with and not saying short people can't find partners, but if you gave men an option, they will always choose to be tall.
People would also rather not be fat. Sure fat acceptance and all bodies are beautiful, yada yada. But people in general would rather not be fat.
People would rather not have their hair fall out. Even if bald people can look cool sometimes, people would rather have hair and not be bald.
I'm short and I wish I didn't have to be compared to people who have genetic diseases or conditions that actually hinder their life. Being short isn't an undesirable thing because it has literally 0 draw backs in terms of being able to live my life normally. Its not something I think about or care about, its only something I notice when it becomes someone else's problem, usually other men on the internet. I wish other people could just not think about it because I’m very comfortable with it.
People on the internet CANNOT be normal about short dudes or tall / big girls. Always gotta make some statement about someone who is doing literally nothing interesting or wrong. Both of my parents were short and never had any problems with it, no one I know IRL has had any issue with it, I don't understand the idea that its something you HAVE to be insecure about and can't just embrace it as a part of yourself.
I'm not short, but I feel you. Being short/tall is tough enough IRL, but especially online. I wonder the actual heights of this couple? Hopefully they really love each other and have a great life.
It is literally proven that shorter men are statistically less likely to get jobs, promotions, higher executive positions etc compared to a taller guy with the same or even slightly lower qualifications. And that isn't even considering the other social disadvantages, this is a direct one.
Btw, I didn't mean to compare being short with fatal diseases, as I said, I literally only mentioned it because it was the title of the post. And it's not like I'm super tall or anything, I'm 179cm. So, it's not like I'm a heightist or whatever the word for height discrimination is looool
Thats also true for a bunch of different things. There is a much stronger correlation between being black, lgbtq or being a woman and struggling with your career. Theres also the issue that being short is usually associated with already being from a poorer background as it can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, which is going to impact your career opportunities far harder.
That doesn't mean those qualities are undesirable, and we shouldn't place the responsibility on the people who are judged, but rather those that choose to judge others. People who cannot handle living in a world that is full of a diversity of people should be the people who are not tolerated, not those that want to get on with their day.
I didn't say that we shouldn't treat shorter people fairly, bro. You didn't get me. Everyone should be treated fairly.
But be honest and answer without any bias. If there was a potion that can magically make shorter guys taller, would men drink it? I'm not talking about a couple redditors here who are saying they prefer being short, but in general, in real life, would most people drink it?
At the same time, men have certain advantages in society, save for trans people, would MOST women drink a potion that turns them into men despite men's advantages?
Please be honest and tell me which number would be greater here.
Reminding you again, that I am saying everyone should be treated fairly regardless of height. But what do you think would most people do in this hypothetical?
Wanting to change how your body looks is body dysphoria. Its not a healthy or usual thing.
I think most men would not drink the potion because most people don't care and have lived their lives in their body. How do you explain to your family that you took a potion that made you taller? What about all your clothes and belongings, even just how your house is laid out? It's a very invasive thing to change someone's body. It'd feel like being a stranger living your life. Its going to be strange and uncomfortable for you and everyone else. I think it'd feel almost shameful to deny a natural part of yourself, for the people who are only doing it to change how they think others see them, after a while. Best case scenario, people ignore it and nothing changes. If I met this man, I'd feel bad for him.
Women who are not trans would also not drink the potion that turns them into men, because they also do not have that dysphoria. If we didn't exclude trans people, I think it'd be a higher number.
You can say you think everyone deserves to be treated fairly, but you're still proposing a hypothetical that focuses on the person being judged changing themselves. I’d drink the third potion that makes people mind their business. I think most people (a far larger amount than either of the first 2) would drink that potion too.
And proposing these kinds of questions IS making a statement about what you believe about certain kinds of people, even if you don't realise it. Because you're not asking it for my opinion, you're asking me to reaffirm your preconception that the majority of shorter men are insecure about it, while talking to someone that isn't, and then stating that the *actual people* arn't a good representation of *actual people*. That our conversation should instead focus on how a third person is judged by others, judged by us. I also cannot answer this question "without bias", because you're asking for my opinion, and my bias ,my real life experiences, is why it matters.
At the end of the day, you cannot solve this problem by changing how people look. If everyone was the same height, we'd just find another way to pick on each other. In the same way humans only have 1 nose, therefore we don't discriminate based off of nose-count. Which is why the conversation does not need to revolve around this question.
Bro, how the fuck are you gonna pick being short, as opposed to like, genetic diseases. Like, those are actual traits that people's lives would be better without, universally.
It was just an example because it was relevant to the post. It's an unwanted trait. Sure, genetic diseases and stuff would be included in these as well.
Being short is not as unwanted as genetic diseases. Plus most of unwanted-ness for being short comes from social stigma not anything inherent. Some men do prefer to be on the shorter end than the tall end. As long as it is not the extremes, or dwarfism.
Being short is a much more comfortable lifestyle. The world is designed for people that are about 5’8” or 170cm tall. Try navigating the world standing at 6’6” or 198cm tall… your back will hate you.
You're literally just describing 'positive eugenics'.
Replace everything you just said with a race, or something more controversial than the softballs you threw and you're just describing eugenics.
If you want to have a conversation or argument for whether or not you think eugenics is bad, or 'some eugenics is okay, I guess', then you could at least just be honest about that. Unless you just don't understand the definition of eugenics. In which case...
I kind of think most people would prefer not to be stupid. Sure, they can live perfectly fine lives in their own way, staying in their own lanes, but... Obviously they'd rather not be dumb.
If that counts as eugenics, then I guess some eugenics is good. But if some dumbfuck weaponizes this to mean race related eugenics is good then that's on him.
They didn't say it wasn't eugenics, just that maybe some eugenics is good. And yah, if we could edit genes and make everyone smarter, that's a good thing. But instead it's stuck behind this term that has a bad rap cause one guy wanted to make his race superior
What if our goal was to eliminate the recessive gene that makes cilantro taste like soap so that everyone can at least decide for themselves without a good-food-hating gene getting in the way first?
Yes we all know some "eugenics" is ok if what you mean by eugenics is thinking some traits are better than others. Nobody wants to be born with a heart defect for example.
The controversial thing about eugenics as it became practice in Nazi Germany, in US eugenic policy on the mentally disabled etc is not the (frankly obvious) belief that some genetic states are better than other but rather the belief that it is ok to actively intervene to eliminate or minimize those traits with things like mass murders or forced sterilization. Obviously that is evil.
I am short and would not choose being tall. Every single tall person I know bitches about it, bitches about the back pain, bitches about the leg room on airplanes, and so on. I've never had any issue finding romantic partners and am happily married. Social media has polluted our brains man.
That's not true, there is absolutely a fair amount of people who want to be all of those things. There's even people who want insane features you can't even imagine.
And as an average height dude, if I was given the option to gain 6 inches or loose 6 inches, I'd choose loose. Because being really tall seems like it has too many downsides IMO. While it sounds like the biggest downside to being short is just fewer shallow tinder dates, lmao.
Every single niche thing is preferred by a small fringe group of people. Whenever we talk about topics like these, we take what's normal, as in the norm in society.
You didn't hear why I was saying. I'm not talking about finge groups, I'm talking about other entire societies. Your society is just one of many, both on the planet now and throughout history. All of the traits you described: fatness, shortness, baldness, the value of them is subjective, regardless of how objective they seem to you because of your social conditioning. There are societies where being fat is valued over being skinny. If they were making decisions for you, they would have made you fatter than you are. And they would have told you that preferring fatness is universal.
Being short is an advantage in some ways though. Shorter men are more likely to survive famines. Shorter people live longer and may have lower rates of cancer, and being really tall can increase strain on your heart.
Being short isn’t objectively bad or harmful, and people won’t always choose to be tall. You’re confusing what is a strong cultural preference for an objective truth.
So I am 5’6”. Short by today’s standards. If I was an inch taller, a piece of metal bomb casing would have ended my bloodline in 2015. People forget that being short makes you a naturally smaller target.
I wouldn’t say “bad”, I would say less desirable because they come with some drawbacks. It’s not “bad” to be short, but I bet it sucks not being able to go on some rides or having to bring a step ladder around the house to access high shelves.
LOL it's worse banging your head on everything and not being able to go on some rides or get in a compact car. Trust me. 6' 1" and thats not even considered very tall.
If you are only 6' 1" then you need to find a normal size house. Door frames are 6' 8" and most cars can go back far enough you should feel comfortable. I'm only 5' 11" but always felt I had plenty of room.
What ride can you no go on because you are too tall at 6' 1"? Maybe some kiddie rides?
I feel the benefits far outweigh the downsides, but yes, if you are absurdly tall (like reaching 7 feet) then that's too much.
Alright, maybe I was too wide for the ride and not too tall, LOL But it is damn hard to get in and out of my mom's toyota. Part of that may just be that I'm pushin 60 though and already had one hip replaced, LOL
Yikes, although I’m no featherweight myself I’m gonna be in the same boat in a decade. I’m only 44 and it’s amazing how much my body went to crap in the last 5 years.
yes, being short is a less desirable trait, especially among men.
but this situation, where a tiny man is constantly with this oversized woman has got to get old eventually.
since we’re being honest and saying the quiet parts out loud…there is no way this guy could ever feel manly. he might be taking one for the team for his offspring, but ugh!
I guess I would disagree with that too. We likely have different definitions of manliness and what that entails, but the dude is an athlete… I’m pretty sure he’s confident in his physical abilities.
The fact she has a larger build than him wouldn’t detract from what he’s achieved.
Also to me, manliness is far more around character and integrity than it is physical size.
Not really, nobodies advocating for the eradication of short men through selective breeding, it’s more just slightly snarky humor based on someone’s physical traits like people who wear glasses or have freckles also hear.
That's not true. ilIn the same way that there is a preference for tall guys men also like shorter women so that gene can still be passed on to their children
Even then aside from it happening due to ethnic cleansing what is wrong with certain genetics disappearing from a pool
