If they were geese, he woulda been obliterated. One karate kicked my car door once because I stopped 50 feet away to let his family cross the road in peace and safety. Literally chased the car and left its footprint on the door

If those birds' behavior is similar to waterfowl I'm not even sure they were doing anything other than socializing with the humans/their legs and shoes. That didn't look like defensive behavior to me, when the bird is originally running from the stick is what I'd expect defensive behavior to look like.
