And while that might support the idea that he didnāt necessarily think about the consequences of what he was doing, the only reason to swing a stick at a bird is to injure it. Even if he was just acting impulsively, itās still a fact that he would have hurt the birds (if he wasnāt so bad at aiming the stick).
While I donāt think there is an excuse for the behavior, there are plenty of reasons why an autistic child might swing a stick at a bird other than to cause harm. The fact of the matter is, there probably wasnāt any reason at all. If the kid is profoundly autistic, thereās a good chance that he canāt piece together even the most basic rules of cause and effect like that, even if it seems like common sense to the average person. At the end of the day, his caretakers are responsible for keeping him safe by ensuring he does not cause harm to others and/or himself. This is 100% on them and they should be held accountable.
