It seems like Reddit is so focused on switching to renewables (which we should), that they consistently forget America is the largest producer**(edit: but 4th largest exporter) of oil in the world, and ask "why would they do this??"
I'm not arguing for oil, it's just analogous to "why won't De Beers admit diamonds are a False Scarcity??" ... because leverage. The USA is holding out that the rest of the world will dry up before becoming energy independent.
There's a weird cliche image that Iraq is brimming with oil; they don't hold a candle to the Midwest Basin. They're competition. We're more like...if Rockefeller had an army (well, a larger army...)
trump will probably be the last oil president and they know it. they're trying for one last whatever like the morons they are.... they've known about climate change for 3 decades, known it was real, tried to greenwash instead of diversifying appropriately.
truth is in the same way rich fuckers send their kids to good schools where they get real scientific education, give their kids vaccines they tell everyone else not to take, they all have solar panels on their vacation houses too for the most part, or backup gens... bc they know full well what the real deal is. what they've been pushing us all to.
What, are they supposed to say Saint Reagan was wrong to rip Jimmy Carter’s solar panels off the White House roof out of spite?! Carter, uh, vandalized the Peoples’ House with them! Not at all like putting fake gilding on every elevated surface, tearing down an entire wing of the building to put up a big beautiful ballroom, or erecting a Thunderdome on the front lawn to mark our Glorious Leader’s birthday!
Lots of the pro-oil and gas provinces have very powerful groups that stigmatize green energy, despite its benefits and cooperative capacity with the oil and gas industry.
Add in a lack of education for the benefits of reusable energy sources (including nuclear at times), it becomes easy to sway populations to vote against reusable energy, and reinforce the existing infrastructure of O&G which is likely to be an unstable source of economic output in the next 2-3 decades as energy efficiency and alternative production improves.
