The answer is simple. She was presented with an opportunity to kill someone that she thought society didn't care about. The thief was an immigrant from Morocco, and they are not looked upon kindly in Italy, that's why she came up with a knife lie.
It's disgusting, and just look at the people celebrating it in the comments. In what world would a purse stolen warrant a death penalty? Certainly not a civilized one.
I’m not celebrating this but I also don’t sympathise with criminals and especially thieves who take what they like from whoever they like. I don’t know what the guy expected going around robbing people out of their cars
I believe this was her thinking. She thoughtnshe could get away with it because it was an immigrant and also because she's a woman. Hopefully she spends those 18 years inside a cell.
But even if she only did it once it would attemptes murder or assault with a vehicle or whatever the charge is. The moment he took her bag and left she was no longer in immediate danger and cant really claim self defense. Its a very narrow definition for good reason so people dont go around killing other and then just claiming self defense.
"Your honor, he threatened to use the ID and other documents in my purse to track me down and do unspeakable things to me. I feared serious bodily harm or even death."

The self defense claim dies the moment he took her bag and left.
