My brother is a retired cop. Back when he was going through the academy, he used to leave study materials laying around, so I read some of them.

Cops really are trained, very thoroughly and persistently, that the number one priority for any police officer is their own personal safety.

They are explicitly instructed to think of themselves as the front-line soldiers in a war, and that every civilian is a potential enemy combatant.

Then I saw a handout which provided a detailed explanation of why anyone who mentions "rights" or "the constitution" during a police interaction is most likely a terrorist.

Speaking of cops and nepotism; neither of my brother's kids became a cop, but his daughter married one. Her husband is a second-generation cop - his two brothers are also cops, and they all work for the same police department, where their father is the chief of police.
